Nicholas Michael Obituary

News Death Notice

MICHAEL, Nicholas "Nick" Gust 1924-2009. Born February 8, 1924 in Dayton, Ohio to Greek immigrants, Gust and Evdoxia, Nicholas "Nick" Gust Michael had a remarkable life which transcended age and station. Nick, who passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2009, lived until he died. He was a friend's friend, a ladies' man, a man's man and a man for all occasions. Most importantly, he was an affectionate husband and father. Nick propelled himself full throttle through 85 years of life, resplendent in a Neiman-Marcus sports coat, a colorful tie and gleaming cuff links. He could tell jokes, and listen attentively to another's, and then shake out a long, hearty laugh. You met Nick and you remembered him. At the age of 8 and with his younger brother, Pete, and older sister, Marie, at his side, Nick and his family endured the financial difficulties of the Depression. Part-time work mowing grass, delivering newspapers and caddying at Community Golf Course for less than a dollar per day instilled the business confidence that would be significant later in his career. Upon attending Fairmont High School and the University of Dayton, Nick started his business career with GM Frigidaire. As World War II progressed, Nick was drafted in the U.S. Army and assigned to the mule pack artillery unit in Colorado Springs. Although a lover of animals, Nick grew impatient with the mules and applied for assignment with the Air Corps after receiving flight training at Washington State College. After brief stints with the Air Corps in Santa Ana, California and Amarillo, Texas and with the War beginning to wind-down, he was reassigned to his artillery unit and sent to Europe where he arrived on his 21st birthday. Although seeing limited combat action given the success of the Allied efforts, he participated in the liberation of concentration camps over several months, witnessing first-hand, the devastation and suffering of thousands of people impacted by Nazi rule. After returning from Europe, Nick co-founded Lewis and Michael Moving and Storage, which still continues to do business throughout the region today. Having a passion for cars, Nick sold his interest in the moving company and opened Michael Motors, the Dayton Lincoln-Mercury dealership. Subsequently, he founded Dayton Auto Lease and Thrifty Rental Car which later grew to become a national name-brand rental company. He sold his automobile businesses in the 1960's and was offered an opportunity to work as stockbroker with Greene and Ladd. Through trusting business relationships, Nick grew a customer base measuring hundreds of local families who would continue to rely on his financial guidance and remain customers and friends for nearly 35 years until his retirement. The brokerage office staff also remember "gentleman" Nick as he personally delivered flowers to each of the ladies consistently every Friday and never failed to recognize every personal milestone, birthday or otherwise. While at Greene and Ladd, he met and married his amazing wife, Enid, and his family size, as well as his influence, grew immensely. Going from a household of two, he and his late son, Nicky, embraced the addition of K.C., Stacy, Kirby, Lucinda, Jeff, Jim, Steve, and Cindy into their lives. As the family continued to expand through the additions of son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, Nick celebrated and cherished the arrival of each of his grandchildren (Mac, Cate, Kirby, Gust, Mason, K.C., Jason, Olivia, Nicholas, Sarah, Zach, Amelia, Moses, Kelly, Robert, Mack, Jake, Daniel, Dustin, Tricia and Erica Nicole). In truth, the Nick Michael that most people saw and loved was the guy who loved people. Nick knew no strangers and viewed every encounter as an opportunity for friendship. At the Sycamore Country Club, every golf round was an occasion for merriment as he cheered others fortunes and chuckled when his ball could not be found. He loved his backyard garden and was known to greet his neighbors outside with a martini and yard rake in hand. Nick knew God and was comforted by this relationship in the days leading up to his death. Growing up in the Greek Orthodox Church and later becoming a member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church, Nick treasured the gifts of life and served as a symbol for unconditional love and forgiveness. A Celebration Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering, Ohio. Pursuant to Nick's wishes, a cocktail party will immediately follow at the home of Frank and Stacy Rose. In lieu of flowers, Nick requested as a memorial to him that you make a contribution to your favorite charity, pay a compliment to a stranger, send a personal note to a friend or simply spend extra time with your family.

Dear Enid & Family,
It has been an honor to have been a part of the life of such a humbled man. Nick and the values he has instilled in so many peoples lives will be forever cherished by all. His life was clearly a tribute to life itself and all of the blessings that came with his good nature he would always share and spread so others could benefit. Thoughtful and forgiving, loving and generous, dapper and funny, compassionate and friendly, and certainly stubborn and knowingly hardheaded at times (just like his baby brother, my dad Pete) are but only a few words that I would use to describe my Uncle Nick. I know in his life he has done a very thorough job of honoring God just by the incredible impact that he has made on so many individuals lives. He will be so deeply missed by all of us. He very simply touched so many during his incredibly amazing lifetime. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
May the Lord bless you, We Love You, Your loving Nephew Jim, Jackie, Kerrighan, Alex, Nick and Katie Michael Family

Dear Enid,
I am so sorry to hear about Nick. I am out of the country working and just found out. I wish I could have come to the Memorial Service. Nick was always such a good friend to my Dad, Bud and I know they are in heaven having lots of laughs, drinking and playing Gin Rummy! What a wonderful man Nick was. He made everyone feel so special. His obituary was beautifully written and a fitting tribute to him.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Enid.
Love,

Dear Enid, Being able to have Nick in my life since I was a child was a blessing. I looked up to him and asked his advice on many important isssues in my life. From buying my first car as a teenager. (Which I bought a diferrent one other than Lil Nicky's Monte Carlo. Nick was right about that deal). To as a grown man. I sought his advice and his only when I moved into the Financial Industry with New York Life. I loved him and he loved all of us. I will miss him dearly. Love, Patrick

Enid & Family,
My thoughts are with you. I was 24 when I met Nick and now 56. He always wanted to guide me back then and tell me "You can do anything Baby, just remember that".
When I think back on those days Nick was such a part of my young life.
Working with him has so many memories. I remember the blizzard of 1978 and we were talking on the phone about his life and my life at the time and he said "Precious, I know that 20 years from now we will still be friends"
When I saw him last week in the hospital I told him I remembered that, and it was alot more than 20 years later.
Through a move and divorce and a move back to Dayton and how our lifes were not always connected, when you saw him you were always connected as though there had not been any time in between.
So many fond memories of dinners with Nick & Enid and their beautiful wedding reception, living next door to them and enjoying many evenings of conversation and midnight chats (well Nick would be asleep on the couch).
Everyone had an open door into your home and both of you made everyone feel as though they lived there.
George Stoycos drinking at your counter bar after work and Aglaea making a feast for us to eat on the weekend. Nick and Aglaea Stoycos spatting back and forth some Greek words all in fun.
How Nick loved K.C., she was just a little girl and would see me pull in the drive from work and ride her bike up to my car and say "Are you guys coming over tonight, Please!" And Nick would yell from the door," Enid will be here in an hour you guys come over and eat with us." It was fun watching him care for K.C. He loved being brought into Enid's family and being a Dad and Grandpa. What a gift you gave him Enid.

How he loved little Nicky and wanted him to be happy in life. I know that they are together now and smiling at each other.

That infectious laugh he had! It made everyone smile.

Working with him I watched him bring in fresh flowers every week and put them in a vase (this was before his business took an upward turn). He said "Precious, flowers are good for the soul, and can make any day better". It always made me smile when he called me Precious. To this day every time I put flowers in a vase at home I remember that.
It is amazing the people Nick touched and had influence on through life. Nick loved life and even though he had experienced tough times at some points he would rise above it and would see good in everyone.
He loved to make people happy.
Nick's spirit will be with all of us forever and I think God meant for that to be.
Thank you Enid for loving and taking care of Nick and encouraging him so many years ago you were truly the wind beneath HIS wings. He knew that.
I will miss you Nick, but I know you are in a better place and at peace.
We will all smile for the rest of our lifes every time we think of you.
Thank you for that! Thank you for being my friend.
God please hold my friend in your arms forever.
Love,
Terry MacPherson (Roudebush)

Our deepest sympathy to all of Nick's Family. My parent's (the Christons) were good friends of the Michael Family, and I have fond memories of visiting them when we were children. After I married my husband, Alex, we continued to spend New Year's Eve with Nick seeing the New Year in playing either Canasta or Monopoly. This would have been the late 40's and 50's. Later our son use to baby sit for little Nicky. He left behind many wonderful memories.
Nick was vivacious, energenic, humble, friendly and outgoing. A great guy. He will be missed by many. May his memory be eternal.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Anne (Christon) and Alex Blair.

Mrs. Michael and KC, I am crying and laughing as I read this, and you did a beautiful job capturing his spirit. I felt I were his "baby" each time I had the pleasure of his company. I know he will remain in your hearts, but your hearts are broken with sadness now. I will have you in my thoughts in Friday and the days to come. Love, Suzanne Russell
