"Mr. Shoe"
Jim Shoemaker passed away suddenly on Friday, May 30, 2008.
Jim was born in Williamsport, PA to Paul E. and Grace E. Burgess Shoemaker (both of whom are now deceased). Jim grew up in Williamsport, playing baseball and riding his bike all over town. He graduated from Williamsport High School and went on to earn a Bachelors of Education from Lycoming College. Upon graduation from Lycoming College, he moved to Wilmington, DE to begin his teaching career. He went on to earn a Masters in English from the University of Delaware. His teaching career spanned thirty years, beginning at Mt. Pleasant Jr. High and finishing those years at Mt. Pleasant High School. While at Mt. Pleasant High, he also was a boys' tennis coach, a ticket manager for various athletic events, and a theater director for many of the high school's plays and musicals. Jim was a man of many talents. Not only was he a beloved English teacher to countless Mt. Pleasant students, he was also a handyman extraordinaire and a great house painter. He enjoyed the life of traveling throughout the USA, first in travel trailers and then in his motorhome. His sense of humor always brought a smile to people's faces and he had a nickname for everyone. Not only was he a true scholar, but he was also a gentleman who enjoyed helping others. With Jim, there was always time to stop and chat.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; his son, Adam (Amy) and granddaughters, Claire and Gail, all of Tampa, FL; his daughter Anne of Wilmington; his stepdaughter, Katie Winters of Wilmington; his sister Molly (Dick) Wagner of Jersey Shore, PA; his brother P. David (Lois) of Gainsville, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
