He received a Master's Degree in music education from Temple University in 1947. Patrick was a very successful musician until the age of 90.

He began his teaching career at the Avon Grove School District, Avondale, PA, and after thirty-three years he retired in 1977 as head of the music department at the Kennett Consolidated School in Kennett Square.

Mr. Canfield was a fantastic musician and a fabulous teacher. He came to Kennett High School to start a marching band. I was fortunate to be one of the original members of that band. I also was lucky enough to be a part of the dance band he led, playing the piano and even singing with the band. He helped grow my love for big band music which we could experience back in the 50's at the Sunnybrook Dance Hall. Living out in the country made it difficult for me to get to before-school rehearsals, and Mr. Canfield was kind enough to pick me up at home and drive me to school so I didn't have a 45-minute ride through the hills of Landenberg on the was to school. He continued this practice with my sister Norma five years later. Mr. CanfieId had a profound effect on the lives of many, many students. I will never forget him!

Dear Rose -- I am so sorry for your loss, Pat was a great guy and I always had a great time around him. He appeared on my radio show at WJBR-AM on many a Saturday morning to talk about his books and life and was always the consummate guest. We'd have a wonderful time talking about his books and telling stories and I was always happy to have him on board. Of course this all started for me many moons ago when Pat was teaching me to play the clarinet and drums. In high school I began playing the tuba. Life does not give us the chance to know many people to categorize as wonderful but that description fits Pat Canfield. I'll miss you very much, Pat, and thanks so much for your warm friendship.

Rose,

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your husband and lifelong friend. I was fortunate to have been your neighbor for five wonderful years. Both you and Pat were thoughtful, kind, generous neighbors who delighted in the adventures of my two children. Although my contact with you and Pat was brief, it was profound. Pat's positive always upbeat personality will live long in my memory of him.

Pat was so loved, and he excelled in everything he did -- his marriage to Rose, his teaching career, his business ventures.
Most of all, Pat spread happiness wherever he went, and he was so beloved just by being Pat. I was so looking forward to seing the Canfields this fall at our 50th class reunion. He will be missed.

Mr. Canfield taught me how to play the French horn in fifth grade. I had the pleasure of having him as my teacher and band director for the rest of my school career at Kennett. It is hard to think of anyone else who had such an impact on me in school. I value all of the skills he taught me- life skills as well as musical skills. I can still remember playing the Notre Dame Victory March On my French horn in the parades. Gosh was that hard to do!! I managed because I knew that was what Mr. Canfield would have wanted. What a truly remarkable man. There is nobody who can fill his shoes.
Love to you, Rose.

Dear Rose
I was so sorry to read Pat's obituary online here in South Africa, and my heart is with you. Pat's gift to the world was that he touched the lives of so many people in a very special way through his work and other activities. He truly used his talents well and there are so many people who will never forget him. I have very fond memories of the many hours I spent Pat's and your company. You are two of the kindest most gracious people I have ever met. Surely he has a very special place in heaven.

I was blessed to have Pat Canfield as my first instrumental teacher, along with his stories and songs of his beloved wife, Rose. He left a lasting impression and helped cement my love of playing saxophone. He leaves a great legacy behind and will be dearly missed.

February 28, 2013

I was privileged to be a member of the Kennett High School Band in its very first year under the leadership of Pat Canfield. He must have had nightmares trying to get us to march in straight lines, let alone play at the same time. He was always cheerful and full of encouragement, even marching in the Memorial Day Parade with temperature in the 90's in wool uniforms.
We all learned so much from him and valued his friendship so highly. My prayers are with Mrs. Canfield and all who miss him.

February 28, 2013

My condolences to the grieving loved ones. May the PEACE of God guard your hearts and minds.

It was with deep sadness that I read of Mr Canfield's passing. He was a great man and a wonderful teacher filled with encouragement and fun. I'll always remember our rehearsals and his "whatta ya want, an egg in your beer"? Never quite knew what that meant, but it made us laugh! His passing leaves a very empty spot at the podium!

Mr Canfield was a kind and caring man who dedicated his time teaching students the beauty of music. He was able to transform noise into music and made it fun. For years (70's) he took the band members to New York City for the St Pattys parade. We always had a great time. He was a great guy and wonderful teacher!!!

Thoughts of Mr. Canfield always bring a smile to my face, whether it's memories of him driving off with Dad to the music conventions in Harrisburg or his singing Irish songs in the band hallway. He was a great part of our youth.

Dear Rose,

I am so sorry for your loss. You and Pat are wonderful examples for us all on how a marriage should be.

I first met Pat in 1954 when I began playing the clarinet in the Kennett School system. We always had a wonderful time; he was always so happy and pleasant. In high school, when several of us couldn't get to school by bus for the 7:30 AM band practice, we were picked up by Pat on his way to school. He taught the four or five of us many of life's lessons while providing us with a wealth of great stories.

In recent years, I've reconnected with the Canfields - at book signings, reunions, visits, and phone calls. I cherish the time that we have spent together. What a loving, classy couple.

Rose, you're in my thoughts and prayers.

Rose, I am very sorry for your and your family's lose. Pat was a great friend and teacher to many of us who attended Kennett HS. He always had a smile on his face and made learning to play an instument fun. We can only hope that we are as energetic, lucid and gregarious in our 70's, 80's and 90's as he was!

Mr. Canfield was the guy who first taught me how to properly hold drumsticks and how to read music at New Garden Elementary. It was around 1973 or so. He was a good guy and a boatload of fun and I was bummed when he left Kennett. Condolences to the entire Canfield Family. I am thinking of you at this time. Much love and respect.

I have many fond memories of Pat ... as a young trumpet student growing up, and later in life as a cherished friend and fellow trumpet player in many different bands.
He loved every aspect of his life.
He told me about his teaching H.S. Band kids once ..."Jimmy, if they ever knew how much fun I have doing this, they would fire me in a heart beat"!
God Bless, and Keep You Pat.
I may remeber what you taught me about the trumpet ... but I can only hope and pray to be the person were in life!

Now you can play some duets with Gabe Upstairs.

I have such fond memories of "Patty" as we called him. I spent many summers at Rosemount and one of the best things about going there was Patty. He was so sweet to all of us kids, he made every one of us feel special and welcomed. He wore a smile everywhere he went. I recently saw him again after many, many years at my aunt's funeral and am so glad I did. It was great to reconnect after all that time and he was exactly as I remembered him. What a wonderful, wonderful man...they don't get any better than Patty Canfield. He will surely be missed.

Pat was a real friend to all who knew him. I had the pleasure of knowing Pat for 20+ years by working with Al Santoro. We played at the DuPont C.C. one night and I left a piece of equipment behind. Pat called me and let me know that he had it and asked me to come to the country club to pick it up. Once there he invited me to lunch and we had a wonderful visit together. Spent many an evening with Pat and Rose at the functions we would play. What graceful giving people. Always there for a good joke and warm laugh. Pat is a true gentleman and the forever Irishman.

Rose, I am so sorry for your loss. Pat was one of the best men I knew. He taught so many of us how to live life to the fullest and how to be a better person each and everyday! I know Pat will be missed, but I also know that he is in Heaven playing the piano and making up new songs everyday. So many of us have memories that will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know right now Pat is sending you a song from Heaven! Love, Diann

Pat Canfield was one of life's real characters. With children of all ages he was the Pied Piper. He was funny, jolly and very kind.

I learned how to play the cornet with Mr. Canfield in 1961. Years later, I am still playing tuba and valve trombone regularly in the Austin area. I know there are many former Canfield students who are either still playing or have fond memories of their days playing in his bands. He always made it seem like an adventure.

Mr. Canfield's retirement was almost a second career, with travel, book-writing and more trumpet playing. He was a fine trumpeter with great role models: Harry James and Doc Severinson.

When I was just getting my career started I did some substitute teaching in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Students enjoyed giving subs a hard time, and I weathered my share of storms. Mr. Canfield had recently retired, and would come out and substitute when a district needed help for a couple of days. Somehow the students never found it in their hearts to give this jolly man a hard time.

Pat Canfield had a long life and has now left us, but he will live on in the hearts of his many friends. To know him was to be his friend.
