Age 83, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away at his home on Monday, November 13, 2006.
He was born July 10, 1923, and spent his formative years in Lewistown, PA. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. He attended the University of Delaware for 1 year and upon returning from the service, he attended Michigan State University from which he graduated in 1950. While at Michigan State, he was Captain of the football team for 3 consecutive years. Bob was employed by the Chrysler Corporation, where he served in succession of executive positions, retiring as group vice president of automotive sales and marketing. While at Chrysler he was responsible for developing the Dodge Charger and is the "Godfather of the Daytona." In 1982, he joined Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. In 1992 he retired from Toyota as Executive Vice President of Sales Operations. Bob served on the Board of Worthington Industries, Beebe Medical Foundation and was co-founder of the Delaware State Junior Golf Scholarship Fund. He also served on the Board of Directors of Rehoboth Beach Country Club. In recent years, he was honored by his induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit, MI, the Football Hall of Fame at Michigan State University and the Hall of Fame at the Pennington Preparatory School in Pennington, NJ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Grace McCurry; and a sister, Josephine. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Lynam McCurry; 2 daughters, Jody Burton of Edgewater, MD and Meg Rapp of Crofton, MD; a son-in-law, James Rapp also of Crofton, MD; and by 4 grandchildren, Stephen Burton of Redondo Beach, CA, Robert McCurry Burton of Cincinnati, OH, Maggie Rapp and Candace Rapp, both of Crofton, MD.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 17, at 11 am, at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, 221 West Side Drive, Rehoboth Beach, DE. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Route 23, Beaver Dam Road, near Angola, DE. Rev. Dr. Frank S. Deming, Jr. will be officiating. Friends may call on Thursday, November 16, 7-9 pm, at PARSELL FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATORIUM, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947; or to Tunnel Cancer Center, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
