Sergeant Rodney H. Bond, Jr.

Middletown, DE - Age 40 and a 14-year-veteran of the Delaware State Police, died unexpectedly near his home Friday evening. Rodney was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on September 24, 1977: he was the cherished son of the late Rodney Sr. and Sandra Bond. Rodney was raised in Lancaster and was a graduate of Hempfield High School. Rodney attended Morehouse College and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Kinesiology from Temple University in 2000. Rodney also attended Wilmington University and graduated in 2017 with a Masters Degree in Administration of Justice.

Law enforcement has been a part of Rodney's family for as long as he could remember. His father, Rodney Sr., pioneered his way as one of the few African-American Troopers for the Pennsylvania State Police. Sergeant Rodney H. Bond was hired on September 19, 2003 into the 74th Delaware State Police Recruit Class. He began his career assigned to Troop 2 during his Field Training Officers' Program, and upon completion, was permanently assigned there to the Uniformed Patrol.

Sgt. Bond was assigned to Human Resources Recruiting Unit at Headquarters and Troop 2 Uniformed Patrol before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant on November 1, 2015. Sgt. Bond supervised Troop 1 Patrol and served as School Resource Officer Supervisor. He was assigned to various part-time units within the division including, Trooper Recruiter, TAC (Trainer Advisor Counselor) at the Training Academy, and as a member of the State Police Honor Guard Unit of which he proudly and honorably served since May of 2006. Sgt. Bond also mentored and serviced the community as a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement, N.O.B.L.E.

Family was always first and foremost to Rodney; he was a devoted husband, a loving son and an amazing father. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, coaching, mentoring, exercising, creating artwork and traveling around the country and abroad. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Rodney will be fondly remembered for being a genuine friend, a man of his word and always available to help others.

Rodney is survived by his mother Sandra Bond, his wife of 15 years Tawanda Bond, children Rodney III, Bryson and Alahna; godson, Eric, mother-in-law, Sheila Campbell, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral 12PM Thurs., Nov. 30th at The Bob Carpenter Center, 631 S. College Ave., Newark, DE 19716; public viewing 10AM-12PM only. Burial, Gracelawn Memorial Park.
