S. Jayakumar Obituary

Dr. S. Jayakumar

S. Jayakumar, an Indian American pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who pioneered surgical advances in the treatment of clubfoot, scoliosis and congenital dislocation of the hip, died on March 14, 2013 in Coimbatore, India. The cause was complications of a heart condition, precipitated by a severe asthma attack.

An early proponent of universal childhood polio vaccination, Dr. Jayakumar, working with Alda Fowler and others, established a model for the disease's eradication by helping create a free oral polio vaccination program in 1965 in Coimbatore, India, his hometown, a type of approach later followed by organizations such as the Rotary Club and eventually the Gates Foundation. During his career, he also developed surgical instrumentation, like his eponymous "J Hook," that went on to be routinely used by surgeons.

Shanmuga Sundaram Jayakumar was born in Coimbatore, in what was then the Madras Presidency of British India on April 4, 1936, the son of D. Shanmuga Sundaram, a lawyer, and later the city's Public Prosecutor, equivalent to District Attorney, and his wife, Angammal. After primary education at St. Michael's School in Coimbatore, he attended Madras Medical College, graduating in 1959, and then continued there until 1965 with specialist training in orthopaedics. Upon receiving his medical degree, Dr. Jayakumar initially worked for the Indian Railways as a railway doctor. The first orthopaedic surgeon in Coimbatore, he established a private practice there in 1965.

An opportunity for additional training brought Dr. Jayakumar to the United States in 1973, with an orthopaedic residency at Howard University, under the famed African-American surgeon, Dr. Charles Epps. While there, he treated Vietnam-era veterans in rotations through Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. In 1974, Dr. G. Dean MacEwen, the then medical director of the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, invited Dr. Jayakumar to a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics. He later became a staff orthopaedic surgeon at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children until his retirement in 2011. His major interests in orthopaedics included the spine, clubfoot, tarsal coalition, spina bifida and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. He was renowned for his dedication to the compassionate care of children, endearing himself to colleagues, patients and their parents who fondly referred to him as "Dr. Jay."

In Delaware, he was a member of the American College of Surgeons - Delaware Chapter, Medical Society of Delaware, Delaware Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics - Delaware Chapter. Nationally and internationally, he was a member of scores of professional societies including: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Scoliosis Research Society, Societe Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopedique et de Traumatologie and the Eastern Orthopaedic Association. When he became a member of the American Orthopaedic Association, he was one of only a handful of members of Indian origin. He lectured on pediatric orthopaedics throughout the years with these organizations and was invited to speak in many countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland and South Korea.

Dr. Jayakumar's global impact extended to teaching young surgeons through an International Fellows program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children that trained future medical leaders in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Mongolia, Poland, South Korea and Thailand. In addition, he served as a Consultant Reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery from 1985 to 1987, later acting as an Associate Editor from 1987 to 1997 and then as a Deputy Editor from 1997 until 2003. Dr. Jayakumar authored ninety-one articles published in peer-reviewed journals, nine medical book chapters and nine book reviews. In 1990, he co-authored the influential book, "Imaging Strategies in Pediatric Orthopaedics."

Among his appointments, Dr. Jayakumar served as a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics with Thomas Jefferson University. In addition, he was an Honorary Civil Surgeon at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, helping found its orthopaedic department in 1965 and creating an artificial limb program with assistance from the US government. He was also an Honorary Visiting Professor with Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

Dr. Jayakumar's community service extended to work on two continents. He regularly returned to his native India to visit family and supervise the care of long-standing patients. In addition to his efforts implementing free polio vaccinations, he was instrumental in the creation of the Coimbatore Orthopedic Centre, a physical therapy institute founded under the auspices of the Society for the Aid of Handicapped Children. In the United States, Dr. Jayakumar was involved with various charitable organizations and provided orthopaedic care for handicapped children at Camp Manito in Wilmington, Delaware.

His interests beyond medicine included travel, art, astronomy, gardening, Carnatic music and literature - from Arthur Conan Doyle to Tagore and Virginia Woolf. Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" was a current favorite. He was active in the Indian community in Delaware, helping found a Hindu temple now serving thousands in Hockessin, Delaware.

Dr. Jayakumar was treating patients until the very end. On a recent family excursion to the foothills of the Western Ghats of South India, his wife's uncle fell into a ditch, lacerating a newly operated knee. Without medical supplies, Dr. Jayakumar successfully treated the wound. His uncle-in-law would have the distinction of being Dr. Jayakumar's final patient.

Dr. Jayakumar was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Dr. Kausalya Muragaiyan, a prominent OB/GYN in Pollachi, India. He is survived by his wife Mrinalini Jayakumar; his daughter, Dr. Anitha Patel (and her husband, Dr. Prakash Patel); a son, Shan Jayakumar (JJ); and grandchildren, Anisa Patel and Dhruv Patel.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Wilmington, Delaware at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any of Dr. Jayakumar's favorite charities including: World Wildlife Fund, Doctors Without Borders or the Nature Conservancy.

I think of Dr Jay many times through the years. I had the privilege to work with him at AI Dupont. He was such a presence in the OR, he was a advocate for his pts. and demanded excellence in his Operating room. I still can hear him directing his team .
He was a excellent teacher and surgeon.
He really cared and loved what he did.

I was referred to Dr. Jay when I was 19. He was my physician into my early twenties when AI DuPont Institute stopped treating adults. Never before or since have I had a more wonderful doctor. His genuine concern, compassion and gentle nature together with his medical expertise were among the qualities that distinguished him from other doctors I have known. My family loved him as much as I did. Through the years I reached out to him with questions and he always responded with interest and kindness. I am deeply saddened to hear about his passing, and I am truly grateful to have had him as my doctor and my friend.

I was a patient of Dr Jays for 21 years. He was amazing. He was great to my entire family. I recently had more ortho surgery for my hip dysplasia and my husband was looking for a way to email him to let him know how well I'm doing and we were heartbroken to discover his passing. He will truly be missed.

I was just talking about Dr. Jay with my mom the other day. I first met him when I was 11 years old at DuPont hospital because I had scoliosis. He performed spinal fusion surgery on me when I was 16. He just had this incredible presence about him that made me so comfortable. I saw him every 3-6 months from the time I was 11 until I was 18. The day of my surgery I was so nervous, but the moment he walked into the room , my nerves relaxed and I smiled because I knew I was in good hands. My mom and I spoke of how incredible he was just the other day, so I looked him up. I'm sorry for the family's loss. He not only was an amazing doctor, but a kind and humble human being. I am 29 now and never have I met a doctor as warm and caring as Doctor J!! I' m sure he is missed by many.

Dr. Jay was a truly, truly special doctor. I am 32 and saw him til I was 18. If I could have remained a patient of his, I would have. I've had many doctors in my time, but he was truly one of a kind. He was the best of the best! He won't be forgotten.

Feel very fortunate to have know Dr. Jayakumar. He was my son Jonathan's doctor for 21 years. Our family was so very blessed to have him as a doctor and friend. He was so kind and thoughtful to all of us. Not only did he care for my son but he helped my family greatly in the early days of understanding about living with Arthrogryposis. He helped my five daughters to understand what was going on with all the trips we made to A.I. In the beginning and for 18 months we traveled there daily. Dr Jay was always so willing to talk and encourage Jonathan and the rest of us. He knew just what was needed and was willing to provide it. We were greatly blessed by him and am so thankful God brought Dr Jayakumar into our lives.

Dr. Jay was my doctor from the time I was only days old until I was 19 and he retired from A.I. Dupont. He was such a great doctor and never steered us wrong. I thank my lucky stars everyday that my parents found Dr. Jay. I was lucky enough to live just around the corner from A.I. for my first 5 years. Even when we moved to VA and Dr. Jay gave my mom names of doctors down here we still opted to travel 4 and a half hours just to see him. Through all the PT and 5 surgeries Dr. Jay helped me become independent and get out of my braces by the end of high school. He was such a great man and certainly will be missed. I'll never forget you Dr. Jay. RIP.

Dr. Jay was an integral part of my daughters care through the Spinal Dysfunction Clinic at AI duPont Hospitall for Children. He provided guidance as she was braced to walk, learned to walk and later decided to use only her wheelchair for mobility. He also performed several surgeries on her spine for scoliosis. I recall many difficult decisions through which his gentle kindness and guidance encouraged and supported both her and us as parents. He will always be fondly remembered as a part of Samantha's growth and development. My sincere condolences to his family for the loss.

I owe my life to Dr.Jay. I came to the U.S. when I was 11. I was noticeably disfigured due to scoliosis. Dr.Jay worked his magic to reconfigure my spine such that the defect was hardly noticeable. I went on to finish nursing school, marry and have 2 children. May God bless Dr. Jay and his family.

Dr. Jay took care of my son since he was about 4 (he's now 26) and performed a much needed corrective club foot surgery on him. Years later he also treated my grandson. Couldn't ask for a better caring and concerned doctor. He will surely be missed. Thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I'm a former patient of Dr. Jay, and while we didn't always get along when I was particularly young, he was still one of the kindest doctors I've ever known. He was highly knowledgeable and incredibly compassionate, and I can honestly say I would not have the quality of life I do now without his expertise. His family has my deepest sympathies.

Dr. Jay was my son's orthopedist from birth until we moved in 2010; 17 years of surgeries, xrays, casts, PT, wheelchairs and braces...such is the orthopedic part of life of many born with Spina Bifida. Dr. Jay was not simply a great doctor, he was a Kind and compassionate man who cared for my son, understood Luke's differences and would respond with a hug when Luke requested one. Dr. Jay showed respect and compassion for me, the stressed out Mom, too. He will always be remembered by Luke and me with fondness. I thank his family for sharing this great human being with us all. Peace.

I met Dr. Jay for the first time in January, 2001 when I arrived at Alfred I DuPont Hospital for Children as a Research Fellow. He made 2001 one of the most wonderful years in my life. We worked hard, we had fun, we learned a lot, we shared a lot, we made lifetime friendships, and he was always there to give advice, help, and chat and silently smile. He taught the research fellows the art of medicine, the art of friendship, the art of knowledge, and even the art of love.
I am proud to say that Dr. Jay was my friend and my teacher. I will always remember his lessons, his smile, and our conversations. The world is a sadder place without such a wonderful person, brilliant physician and wise man. But Dr. Jay is up there in Heaven – we just have to close our eyes in order to see him quietly smiling.

Dr Jay was a Godsend to me and my daughter, Ashley, who was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita in 1985. I spent three years searching for someone who would listen and give us hope for a life of indepedence for my daughter. Doctor after doctor told me she would never walk, she would never feed herself, she would likely have a shortened life. Ten minutes into our first consultation with Dr. Jay he gave me a treatment plan and scheduled her first surgical procedure. My daughter is now a 28 year old mother living on her own and caring for my beautiful granddaughter. We love you, Dr. Jay! May you rest in peace in God's loving care.
