Mr. Stephen John Shiner, age 74 of Bear, DE, loving husband, father and grandfather, died on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born October 21, 1930, in Bethlehem, PA, son of the late Ethel (Petras) and Stephen James Shiner. After graduation from Fountain Hill High School, he attended Bethlehem Business College. He later enlisted in the United States Navy to support the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was assigned to the USS Huse (DE145). Following a 3 year sea duty, he was transferred to the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, VA, and later transferred to NATO Headquarters in Naples, Italy. Upon return to the United States, Steve was assigned to the Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD, and subsequently relocated to Charleston, SC, where he spent 7 months at sea assigned to the nucleus crew of the USS Wainwright (CG28). He later returned to the Naval Training Center to serve as an instructor. After 20 years of distinguished military service, Steve retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (YNCS) in 1971. He went on to complete his business administration degree and worked 15 years as a personnel director with the State of Delaware.
Steve will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Rose Marie (Korpics) Shiner; 4 daughters, Stephanie A. Glenn and her husband, Joseph, Rosemarie A. Short and her husband, David, all of Bear, DE; Lorraine R. Brustman and Bernadine R. Shiner, both of Newark, DE; and 6 grandchildren, Jennifer, Natalie, Joseph, David, Robert and Allison. He is also survived by his loving sister, Ethel Forro of Slatington, PA; and numerous other family members and friends.
Friends may call 6-8 pm, on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, and 10-11 am on Thursday, June 9, 2005, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 am on Thursday at Holy Family RC Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE. Interment with full military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
