1930 - 2014

BOSOMWORTH Peter Palliser, M.D., 84, husband of Jody Simester Bosomworth, died Sat, Sept 27, 2014 in Lexington. He was the Chancellor Emeritus for the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Peter was born May 2, 1930 in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late George Palliser and Vera Siddell Bosomworth. He graduated from Kent State in 1951 and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1955. He received his Master of Medical Science from Ohio State University. He and Jody were married in 1956, and moved to Lexington, KY in 1962 as he began as Chairman of Anesthesiology at the new Chandler Medical Center. He served as Chancellor for the UKMC for 24 years, retiring in 1995 but continuing to serve the medical center as Director of Continuing Education and helping to implement tele-medicine in Kentucky until 2000. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science in 2000 from the University of Kentucky. Other awards and honors he received include the Boy Scouts of America - Silver Beaver Award, Kentucky Medical Association - Outstanding Educator, Key to Lexington, and the University of Cincinnati Daniel Drake Distinguished Service Medal. Peter was a founding member of Central KY Riding for the Handicapped, served on the boards of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, BBB and as corporate chair of YMCA-Black Achievers. He also served on the Urban County Government's Ethics Commission and as V.P. for Explorer Scouting in Eastern KY. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club of Lexington, Twenty First Century and the Fayette County School SMART Program. His enduring commitment to service, keen integrity, balanced perspective and compassion served as his internal compass. He was a great contributor to the health sciences community, a visionary, a builder and listener. His legacy will live on in many ways. Peter and Jody opened their home to over 22 students from around the world who lived with the Bosom-worths, as they pursued their education. In keeping with his lifelong commitment to enabling education opportunity, they established the Dr. Peter and Jody Bosomworth UK Medical Scholarship given to a deserving student annually. Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his children: Virginia K. Bosom-worth, Toronto, Canada; David P. Bosomworth M.D., Lexington, KY; Andrew P. Bosomworth (Peggy), Houston, TX; and Amparo Gonzalez Codding, Morris Plains, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey P. Bosomworth. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren. The family also wishes to recognize and thank Missy Durr, Dr. B's loving friend and physiotherapist, and thank his caregiver Brenda Pickard. In keeping with his commitment to teaching, his body was donated to UKMC Sanders Brown Center for the Aging. There will be a celebration of his life at Second Presbyterian Church at 2pm on Sunday, October 12, 2014 with Rev. Dan Hans and Reed Polk officiating.
