DELAWARE — Harvey Harland Shuster, 80, of Ostrander, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, May 11, 2017.
Loving and beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, Harvey was a U. S. Navy veteran and worked for 25 years with the Delaware City Fire Department, retiring as Captain.
Harvey enjoyed time with his family and traveling on his motorcycle all over the United States with beloved wife Carol and friends. After retirement from the Fire Department, Harvey was employed by Grumman to deliver buses to many major American cities. He had more than one story about his journeys.
Harvey retired to his house in the "country" with enough land for family cookouts and to watch the grandchildren he loved play in the yard by the creek.
Harvey was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Carol Shuster; his parents Everett and Dorothy Shuster.
Harvey is survived by son Tom (Alice) Brown, daughter Kellie Shuster and son Frank Shuster; grandchildren Zack Mount, Amber Parish & Shelby Brown; great grandson Zane Adams; sister Joan (and Richard) Needles; sister-in-law Judy (& Mike) Ford; brother-in-law Jim (and Lori) Cluck; sister-in-law Ellen (Snooks) Cluck; dear friend Perry "Bear" Wallace and many nieces & nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio Health Hospice, 800 McConnell Dr. Columbus, OH 43214.

I came into the Shuster family when I asked Harvey's sister Joan to be my valentine. My first Christmas Eve dinner with the family was on Dec 24, 1974. Joan and I married in 1977. This past Dec 24th (2016) was my 43rd consecutive Christmas Eve dinner at Harvey's house.
Harvey and his dear wife Carol (who died last year) welcomed a young kid and we all grew older together in 5 decades. Harvey and I had very different hobbies and interests, but that did not stop us from talking, laughing and sometimes hugging.
Some would describe Harvey as old school -- the strong, quiet type. I saw the bright eyes and the wicked grin of a good, honorable man. He worked hard, cared for his family and friends.
Through the years, I also enjoyed becoming "uncle" Richard to Harvey's kids -Tom, Kellie and Frank and grandkids (Amber, Shelby and Zack). Great grandson "Zane" is still figuring me out, but it is fun to watch him race around the house with 5 year-old energy.
Two weeks ago, Harvey started hospice-at-home services. When Joan and I visited the night before Harvey passed, there was a homemade Cherry pie on the kitchen counter. Kellie made it because her Dad loved cherry pie. I smiled and grabbed a fork. Every Christmas Eve, I have had a bite of cherry pie at the Shuster home -- cherry is my favorite too. In the recent past, Kellie has taken on the roles of caregiver and pie maker. She has done an amazing job at both. Joan and I watched Kellie, Frank and Zack partner to care for Harvey with love and grace in his final days.
Harvey, I thank you for inviting me into your home; to the Shuster family -- I thank you for inviting me into your hearts. You are in my heart forever.
