HOWARD CULVER Obituary

Howard Joseph Culver, 67, of Delmar died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 29, 1943, in Georgetown, a son of the late Minos "Mike" Culver and Clara Short Culver.

Howard spent his youth in Georgetown and graduated from Georgetown High School with the Class of 1961. After high school, he earned his bachelor's degree from Shepherd College. He started his career in education in 1966 as a physical education teacher at Delmar Elementary. He then went on to Delmar Junior-Senior High School where he taught life science classes for 27 years and was a guidance counselor for many years. He loved coaching and from 1966-69 he served as the head coach to the Delmar High School basketball team and also served as the head coach for the football team from 1970-73. In addition to teaching and coaching, he was also Delmar's athletic director for a number of years. Later in his career he returned to the football team as an assistant coach. He attended Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury where he eagerly supported the homeless project in the church.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna Marie Elliott Culver; two daughters, Laura Culver of Salisbury and Stacy Culver Kuczenski and her husband, Donald, of Delmar; a grandson, William Monroe Kuczenski; mother-in-law, Dollie Eleanor Elliott of Delmar; sister-in-law, Suzanne Elliott Killian of Delmar; niece, Katie Killian Willey and her children, Abby and Stosh of Delmar; and nephew, Sean Killian and his wife, April, and their son, Scott, of Chesapeake, Va. He is also survived by many other members of his extended family.

A visitation for family and friends will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m., and also Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pastor Bill Green will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar.

I can still remember hearing Mr Culver's booming deep voice echo down the halls of what was then the old Delmar High School.... Mr Culver always had a warm and calming presence that was felt, not spoken, to those around him and always had hometown pride for the town of Delmar.

My wife and I started teaching at Delmar in 1991. Howard was always so quick witted but kind. In the mid 1990's, Juliana's mother got very ill with cancer. Howard gave her many of his sick days so she could spend time with her dying mother. At a time when we still weren't sure of Eastern shore folks, his actions spoke volumes.

My first experience with Mr. Culver was in elementary school for phys ed. I had him again as a science teacher in high school. He was one of the best teachers I had. My second experience with him was when he taught my son and he had not changed one bit...still had the patience of Job and made learning fun. He made a huge impact on many lives and will be sorely missed. May God richly bless you and his memory in the years to come.

As many have already noted here, Howard was indeed a class act. He was one of the best professionals and football coaches with whom I ever worked. His loyalty to Delmar High School, its students, and its teachers was remarkable, and he was admired for his honesty and his clever, dry sense of humor. He is very high on the list of Good Guys.
