Richard Norman Obituary

Norman, Dr. Richard J.

Penfield: Richard Joseph Norman, aged 84, of Penfield, NY, and Morristown, NY, passed away on October 16, 2016. He spent his last of many great summers on the St. Lawrence River with his family, before a brief and well cared for stay in St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Ogdensburg, NY, as Parkinson's disease advanced upon him.

Dr. Norman is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Judith McDonald Norman; their four children, Sheila Norman-Culp (Randall Hackley), of London, England, David Norman (Kathy), of Baltimore; Peter Norman (Wendy), of Philadelphia and Janet Norman (Mark Walter), of Annapolis, MD; twelve grandchildren; cousins Paul Turnbull and Jane Donahue, and many supportive extended family.

Dick was born in Ogdensburg on May 18, 1932, the son of Gerald and Elizabeth Kinch Norman. He was a child of the St. Lawrence River, with a fast outboard boat, his dog on the bow, and friends at his side. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy, and shined on the track and on the basketball court.

After graduation from the University of Buffalo Dental School in 1956, Dick and Judy were married in August, 1957 at St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg. Dick served as a US Army dentist from 1956 to 1959 at Fort Holabird, Baltimore. They moved to Penfield, NY where he started his own general dentistry practice. Dick was appreciated by his staff and patients, who indulged his sweets and chocolate habits over his 45+ year career. Dick was ahead of his time as an involved father and supportive husband to Judy's legal career. He was an avid skier with family and many friends, a loyal supporter of St. Joseph's House of Hospitality, a dedicated sports parent at Penfield High, and earned a black belt in karate at age 61.

Funeral services for Dick Norman will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Church in Penfield, NY with Rev. James Schwartz officiating.
