I first met Joan Beck when I was attending the citizen police academy back in 1996. I was in the food and beverage business for 13 yrs and I wanted a career change to the criminal justice system. I did volunteer work with the Aurora PD before going into the academy. Joan took a special interest in me because she knew I wanted to start a career in the criminal justice field. So she made sure I understood everything and to ask her questions if I didn't. After I graduated from the citizen academy I went to college, graduated, with a degree, and for the last 26 years I have been doing criminal justice work, 8 of those years in law enforcement. Thanks Joan for helping and caring and getting me started. RIP

Doug,
I was so sorry to hear about Joan's passing. I, along with most of the APD family received word of Joan's passing by email. As I was reading the normal day-to-day mail, I was emotionally overwhelmed after reading the sorrowful news.
Joan was many things to many people, but for me she was in part responsible for my start here at the PD, over 20 years ago. She was later a colleague, mentor and most importantly my friend.
It has been a year or so since my last contact with Joan, I will miss her not only because she is gone, but also because the world was a better place with her in it.
May God bless you and the boys my Brother!
For my friend Joan Beck "The Living"
Death for the living is a helpless feeling. Nor all the might, nor money, nor medical intervention will provide us, the living, with a safe place to hide from our ultimate destiny. We must always remember our life is right now. We must battle the pressure of the world, so not to become subservient to the insignificant. We must fight to know love and laughter, for our destiny is but a short distance away.

I also worked with Joan in the Detective Bureau of the APD. Joan was a hard worker, able to work the most complex of cases. But her work at the academy, cheering on an old timer through the physical fitness testing, and the KOGA training is what touched me the most. The fact that Joan would gladly accept the challenge to help a fellow officer complete the task at hand, to me, became her trademark. With her personality and smile and infectious laugh, her loss leaves a hole in the world that will not soon heal. Goodbye my friend...you are and will continue to be missed dearly.

I worked with Joan for several years in the Detective Bureau at the Aurora Police Department. She was a joy to be around and a very hard working Detective. I am very sad to learn that her family and friends have lost her. Joan had a personality that you could not help but like her by just meeting her. I was privileged to have known her and worked with her.
