John Moye Obituary

Moye, John
Aug 15, 1944 - May 27, 2022

John Moye, pioneering attorney, philanthropist, and civil leader, died May 27th in Denver at age 77 due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Born in Deadwood, South Dakota to Margaret and Jeff Moye August 15, 1944, John was a precocious and mischievous only child. He inherited his sense of humor from his father, who penned his own obituary. It simply read, "Jeff Moye left Deadwood yesterday and is not expected to return."

John was a dedicated pianist and student who attended the University of Notre Dame, where he met his college sweetheart and later wife, Patti Theisen. He was also known as DJ Johnny Mopp on the ubiquitous Topsy Rock and Roll program at WNDU.

He attended Cornell Law School where he graduated with distinction followed by a four-year station at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. In 1976, he founded a law firm that has evolved over several decades, now known as Moye White. John was recognized as Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year by both the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations in 1981. While known for his impeccable dress in custom-tailored suits, John became even more recognized for his genuine approachability, deep compassion, and commitment to a creative, intellectual, and ethical culture within the firm.

John's professional expertise included contracts, corporate, commercial, banking and partnership law. He chose contracts to spite one of one of his Cornell professors who told him that he would "never understand contracts." He especially loved the intricacies of the language of contracts and wrote "The Contracts Rap," which articulates more than 60 contract law concepts through memorable rhyming couplets, serving as a mnemonic for tens of thousands of graduate students through his legendary Bar Exam lectures.

John authored several books including legal texts on corporations, partnerships, business organizations, federal jurisdiction and the Uniform Commercial Code. He was a professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Denver Law School where he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Law for his commitment to legal education.

John's other commitments extended to dozens of nonprofit and for-profit organizations. He served as the President of the Colorado Bar Association, Chair of the Colorado Historical Foundation, the Board of Law Examiners, the Stapleton Development Corporation, the Denver Urban Renewal Authority, and Downtown Denver, Inc. He also served as Director of the Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado Public Radio, Inc.

In 2006, along with Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Kourlis and Chancellor Emeritus Dan Richie, he cofounded the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS), an independent research center at the University of Denver combining innovation, empirical data, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He traveled internationally to study models in countries like New Zealand and was inspired by intelligent and compassionately streamlined legal systems that better served all parties. In 2016, John Moye Hall was dedicated to him at the University of Denver, where IAALS continues to operate.

Throughout his career, he won countless awards for outstanding leadership, law practice, and civic contributions, only some of which include The Award of Merit, the Colorado Bar Association's highest accolade (2005) and the Dana Crawford Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation (2017). He was a member of The Order of the Coif, Phi Kappa Phi.

In his free time, John loved playing the piano, cycling, gambling in Las Vegas with his best friend Steven Levine, and spending quality time with family in Italy, his grandparents' birthplace.

He is survived by his daughters, Kelly (Mark) Moye, Mary (Tom) Moye Monroe, Megan (Chris) Zacher, his stepdaughter Rachael Portnoy, his grandchildren Madeleine Heroux, Tucker Heroux, Chelsea Monroe, Zoey Monroe, and Zander Zacher, and his trusty dog Joe Biden, who was named long before the presidency.

John's Celebration of Life will be held at the DU Newman Center, Wednesday July 6th 4-6pm

John's favorite poem was "Casey at the Bat," by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. Here is the last verse, personalized for him:

Oh, somewhere in this favored land, the sun is shining bright

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light

And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout

But there is no joy in Denver- the mighty Moye has stepped out

And is not expected to return.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully received at Parkinson's Foundation

My heartfelt condolences. I practiced with John at Moye White. But we first knew one another when I was John's research assistant at D.U. Law in 1974-75 and provided research to help him write the second edition of his hornbook on Federal Jurisdiction. Respect for all he accomplished. So sorry for your (and our) loss.

I started to work in 1983 as a part-time messenger at Head Moye Carver & Ray, one of the first iterations of Moye White. I was as green as they come, never having worked in an office before, let alone a law firm. I think that it was my first week at the firm when John Moye gave me his ticket to a political luncheon at one of the major Downtown Denver hotels. I was way under-dressed for the occasion but broke-bread with some of, what were likely, key Denver businessmen and women. After all, one of the speakers was one of our U.S. Senators for Colorado, William Armstrong. He was a Republican and I an African-American Democrat. Still, I made a point of shaking hands with the senator after the luncheon had ended. I'd only lived in Colorado for 6 months so this was a major highlight. Probably a year later, after I had been promoted to the Assistant Administrator of the firm, John received the Colorado Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award. So I was tasked with planning a cocktail party at our offices to celebrate John receiving the award and all manner of politicians, business people, prominent attorneys would be in attendance. I made a special trip out of the office that evening to get a bottle of wine for John to take home with him after the party had concluded. When I gave him that bottle he paid me one of the greatest compliments of my entire legal career, which has spanned over 30 years. John said, "You really take care of business!" I was only 21 years old at the time but it was not lost on me that John, in my mind, had written the book on business: "Business Organizations." That compliment carried me through years of extraordinary experiences where I worked with some of the most prominent legal minds in the world. However, none are more prominent in my memory than John. I just happened to do a Google search today, on my birthday, and found out that he has passed. I am so very sorry that he is gone because he, just from my experiences alone, makes life so much better for those that know him or like, in my case, knew him nearly 40 years ago. My memory of him lingers on in as positive a way as imaginable. Thank you so much, John!!!

Though I never knew him socially, and sadly our exchanges were few, every time I saw John he made me feel like we were old friends who shared a common bond. Clearly a man of decency and good humor, I am saddened to hear of his passing.

I first met John through his daughter Kelly as we were classmates at CU. When I moved to Denver for Grad School in Urban Planning, John was Chairman of The Denver Urban Renewal Authority and was a mentor assisting me concerning my Thesis Direct Foreign Investment in Downtown Denver. A true asset to Denver, he will be missed. A great influence in my personal life.

I first met John when buying his home in Breckenridge. Then he led the Stapleton Development Corp. that hired me. John gave me pro bono advice on numerous civic adventures. He gave me the names of places to eat in Italy when our family vacationed there. His willingness to provide support for whatever we did was greatly appreciated. He was always available and we saw each other often at Rocky games. Sadly no more. Condolences to the family

I´m very sorry for John´s family and firm for this enormous loss. My heart is broken as I will truly miss this very dear man. He was a very dear friend, inspiration, fellow lover of everything Italian, and the most generous soul I have ever known. I will keep his joy for life in my heart, and will never forget the many valuable lessons I learned from John.

With deepest sympathy to the family of John. I have wonderful memories of John when I retired from the the Moye, Giles, O´Keefe, et al, law firm. I especially hold dear the several document translations, from English to Italian, that I did for him while working at the Firm. What a wonderful and delightful man he was! Thank you John, for all your kindnesses to me and my family, for the memories, and may you Rest In Peace good and faithful servant.

I had the pleasure of working with John Moye in the creation of DU Law Stars, an annual fundraising dinner (which continues to this day) celebrating DU Law's alumni. John and pals created the witty format which has made the event. Personally, I think his idea of a short witty taped tribute to honorees while not allowing honorees time for speeches was and is brilliant. John, you will be missed.
