Morton Mower Obituary

Mower, Morton
1/31/1933 - 4/25/2022

Morton Maimon Mower, loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022, in Denver, Colorado. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his wife, Tobia Mower; daughter Robin Mower, son Mark Mower, daughter-in-law Kathleen Mower; and grandchildren Mason Mower, Luca Mower, and Zeke Mower.
During his lifetime, he received the Space Technology Hall of Fame Recognition Award, the Michel Mirowski Award of Excellence in the Field of Clinical Cardiology and Electrophysiology, the Medical Alley Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research and Development, the President's Award of Heart Rhythm Society (NASPE) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine Alumni Association Honor Award and Gold Key For Outstanding Contributions to Medicine and Distinguished Service to Mankind. He was a 2002 Inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and the recipient of the 2015 Prince Mahidol Awardee in Medicine.
Dr. Mower was a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland Medical School and was board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He held many high-profile academic roles including Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Howard University College of Medicine, and Distinguished Professor of Medicine University of Colorado Denver.
Mort was born on January 31, 1933 in Baltimore and raised in Frederick, Maryland. His father, Robert, was a shoe repairman and his mother, Pauline raised three children. When Mower was 15 years old, his uncle fell ill and a family physician made frequent house calls to treat Mower's uncle. Mower was inspired by the outstanding quality of patient care the family physician provided. As a result, Mower applied to Johns Hopkins University to pursue medical studies.
Mower graduated from the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in 1955. He then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1959. From 1963 to 1965, he served as a captain and Chief of Medicine in the Medical Corps of the United States Army in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Mower has served on the Board of Jewish Recovery Houses, an organization that helps Jewish men and women in the early stages of recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. He served on the board of directors of House of Hope, a faith-based recovery house for Jewish men. Mower and his wife were also involved with Tova House, a recovery house for Jewish women, founded several years later by the Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore and subsequently purchased from the Associated by House of Hope.
Mower was also a board member of the Jewish National Fund USA, and Ben Gurion University.
In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first successful implantation of the automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator, Sinai Hospital renamed the Sinai Medical Office Building on Belvedere Avenue in Baltimore the Morton Mower, M.D. Medical Office Building.
Mort was an avid skier, art collector, world traveler and dancer. Mort was a true patriarch of the family and a pillar of the community. He was valued by so many in the community for his generosity and his kind spirit. He was a gentleman who valued education, honor and philanthropy.

Many, many years ago, while visiting a writer and her husband in Baltimore, we spent a delightful evening - dinner and the theater - with their friends, Toby and her husband, a surgeon I only knew as Morty. Afterwards he invited us up to their apartment for tea. While nestled on an aqua suede sectional sofa, sipping a cup of Darjeeling and nibbling at a black and white cookie (being ever-so-careful not to spill a drop or drop a crumb), the art student of my college days recognized the painting over my head as a genuine Lichtenstien, next to it a true Wharhol. When I gasped at the realization, Morty smiled and, much to my delight, led me, breathless, though white-marbled rooms to discover dozens and dozens of original artworks hanging on every vertical surface - paintings, drawings, etchings, prints: Rembrandts, Miros, Picassos, Renoirs, Pizzarros, and on and on... I was spellbound, lost in a phantasmagorical dream of that long-ago art student. Oh, to see the intricate brushwork, the depth and continuum of colors inches from your eyes... to discover Picasso signed one painting from his blue period twice so it stood out more... to recognize a border on a Rembrandt as reverse writing... to hold that Rembrandt in your hands... to be enveloped in such passion, such light... Thank you for a gift of a lifetime, Morty.

My husband and I want to offer our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Mower. My sister in-law sent me an article about his recent death and legacy in developing the implantable cardiac defibrillator. This device has saved the life of my husband a heart transplant recipient more than once. Great physicians, like Dr Mower that have the drive, skill and inspiration for such advances in medical science touch the lives of so many. We are so grateful . May he Rest In Peace .
