Phyllis Baldwin Obituary

A Denver native, Phyllis was the daughter of James and Thalia Woods. She graduated from Kent School for Girls and Smith College. She later attained 3 additional degrees and taught at the hotel schools at DU and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her last career and the one which she considered her true calling was in the field of psychology and counseling as a Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to her private practice she served on staff at several Denver area behavioral health clinics. Her varied interests included travel, creative writing, fly fishing, and spending time in our beautiful Colorado mountains. Phyllis is survived by her sister Diane (Al) Hickerson of Denver, her two daughters Leslie Baldwin of Denver and Anne (John) Walmsley of Tampa; her two grand children, Beck Easton and Alexandra Easton and great grandson Easton Mora. She also had one nephew Clifford (Leigh) Hickerson and nieces Martha & Lorna Hickerson. In addition, she leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. Phyllis has requested a private celebration of her life, but would want all who touch her life to know that for her death is just a continuation of the journey. The family wishes to thank all of those who have been such an integral part of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation to the charity of your choice.

I had known Phyllis for just under 15 years. She was wonderful woman who I greatly admired. She had a shining Spirit…and she was a born teacher as well as a faithful “student”.

Evangelist Joyce Meyer, once gave a lecture and spoke of a woman that lived every minute of her life in fear…she only saw the fearful side of every event…Phyllis lived her life with joy and courage…and taught others how to do the same.

She helped people understand that it is through our actions…we learn responsibility and the logical consequences of our behavior.

She taught that people do not have to be victims of Life…that they are not helpless…and by working with the Universal Spiritual Source, they have the power to stop their pain and take care of themselves.

The goal of Life is to reach out to our Universal Spiritual Source during BOTH the joys and the sorrows that we are presented with….and acknowledge our gratitude for both. This I do and in this moment of sorrow...I also understand that a life does not end…we just transition… and begin our next journey.

Leslie and Anne... I am so sorry for your loss. Phyllis was a big part of my life for many years and a wonderful friend. I have many fond memories of sharing laughter, tears and growing pains. She always handled life with grace (even when the kitten got in the dryer). I cherish all the times I spent in her living room drinking tea and talking for hours. Her wisdom will forever be part of my journey. She is one of the most elegant yet humble women I've known. May you find peace during this difficult time. Know how much she is loved.

Phyllis was my therapist for more than 10 years. She got me through the break-up of my marriage and of my coven. She listened uncritically and helped me to realize that it was all right to like myself. She even helped me with my homework for my Master's Degree. I will miss her incredibly.

I met Phyllis in 1960 in Boulder in the context of a wedding party. She was charming, gracious, witty, and clever. After a lapse of many years, I saw her again at a family wedding in Massachusetts. The years had not diminished her fine qualities of personhood. She had kept in touch with my two sons, and for that I am most grateful. I join family and friends in grieving over her passing.

While we know that Phyllis was such a wise spirit, accepting what happens and making the best of life's difficulties, still her death to this life leaves such sorrow. Thanks so those who were able to share their caring in helping her. Again, I was sad to be too far away. Condolences to all who will miss her as I do.

Phyliss' skills in counseling helped bring about a positive change in my life that continues to this day. Would that all of us could help someone, at least one person, in such a deep and lasting manner. Tremendous lady.

May the God of all comfort and your precious memories of Phyllis bring you comfort during this difficult time, as well as these words..."he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

We shall not see the likes of Phyllis again - and the world will be a bit smaller without her. She leaves behind a rich legacy for those whose lives she touched. Journey on, Phyllis!
