Robert Conklin Obituary

Conklin, Robert
Louis
05/20/1931 - 12/06/2022

South Denver native Robert Conklin died in his home while being cared for by his children due to complications from a fall. We are heartened by the knowledge that he has rejoined his wife of 67 years, as he was still grieving her passing two years earlier.

While a student at South High, Rob was an elite gymnast and undefeated wrestler, winning state championships at 165 pounds in 1949 and 1950. He and his twin brother Rich both joined the Navy when the Korean War broke out. Rob served on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam Fighter Squadron VF-713, where he co-wrote the lyrics to "Antietam Blue and Gray", the carrier's anthem.

Rob met Shirley Younghein at Grant Junior High, and they married in 1953 following their graduation from South and Rob's return from the Korean War. Early married years were lean, with Rob working a succession of difficult jobs: servicing telephone lines, unloading heavy rolls of sod, and helping build a Wyoming dam, while Shirley cleaned motel rooms. Son Gary and daughter Michelle followed. But Rob's childhood home had inspired him with music and poetry, and so, during the years of heavy, hard labor he also pursued his intellectual and spiritual passion at the University of Denver, graduating from DU in 1957 with his Master's Degree.

Rob then began more than a half century of serving the students of Denver. He was a teacher of English literature and coached wrestling, cross country, football, and track and field at South. He was Vice Principal at South and was the District Athletic and Student Activities Director from 1971-1988. He was Administrative Assistant to the DPS Superintendent from 1988-1990, and then conducted disciplinary hearings for the District till he finally retired in 2011.

He served as President of the Colorado High School Activities Association and was also a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations Athletic Advisory Committee, representing five states. Additional public service included serving on the City's Parks and Recreation Council, the Police Athletic League Advisory Committee and the Colorado State Drug Conference Committee. He was inducted into the Denver Prep League Hall of Fame (1991), the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame (2001), the National High School Sports Hall of Fame (2002), the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame (2009), and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2011) where he was named Outstanding American from the State of Colorado.

Rob was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Jo McNeley, and his wife, Shirley Jewel (Younghein) Conklin. He is survived by his identical twin Richard (Beverly), and his younger brother, Kenneth, as well as son Gary (Nancy) Conklin, daughter Michelle Conklin (Mark Thalhofer), and grandchildren Greg (Melissa) Conklin, Jeff (Beth) Thalhofer, and Emily Thalhofer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, with whom he shared a special bond. The family extends its heartfelt and profound gratitude to loving caregiver Yolanda Adams and the Namaste Home Hospice staff.

Rob's friends and colleagues are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, January 6th, 2023, at 1:30, at the Wellshire Inn. A committal service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023, at 11:15 sharp, at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Shelter C. Please gather by 10:55 at Staging Area C Parking.

Coach Conklin was the greatest influence in my life outside of my family. He coached wrestling for five or six years. I realize how phenomenally fortunate we were that our three years aligned with his time. He instilled a desire to do your best just by being in the room. He was a quiet leadership force. He had the stature and aura of a superhero.
He taught us that our minds would give up long before our bodies would. Practice consisted of a 1.5 mile run, followed by 20 trips up and down the clock tower stairs (5 stories), followed by 90 min of wrestling, followed by another 20 trips on the stairs. No doubt we were the best conditioned team in the city.
He, also, had that quality that made you feel extremely special. He imparted a love of wrestling to me that remains to this day. That path has led to many rich relationships that have lasted a lifetime from teammates to my former students of mine.
I did my student teaching at Manual High School in the Fall of '70 and assistant coached under his identical twin brother, Richard. What a treat that was. Richard told me about a time when South was competing against Manual where our Coach went into their locker room and told his brother's team the match was being forfeited and not to dress out. Great sense of humor.
He had a gift for working with youth. No doubt they sensed his authenticity and compassion that created trust.
I visited him several times through the years and shared with him how thankful I am. I'm glad he enjoyed a long, fruitful life. The world is certainly vastly better for the incalculable number of lives he positively influenced.
Thank you for a lifetime of cherished memories Coach!

I had the privilege of working with the famous Mr Conklin from 1997 - 2010 conducting student disciplinary hearings for DPS. Seeing the respect others had for him and learning more about him personally and professionally, I could never bring myself to call him "Rob". I've never witnessed anyone else other than him show such compassion, empathy and respect towards others from all walks of life. He didn't care where you lived or what you drove, he just cared about helping people through the challenges they were dealing with. He tried to make people from all ages and backgrounds feel like they mattered. I myself was challenged as a single mom and needed to know how to teach my young son how to tie and tie. I came into the office one day with a tie and asked Mr Conklin to teach me, which he gladly did. He was always gracious and kind. I fondly remember our lunches at Charlie Brown's. Mr Conklin had so many stories and I was always eager to listen. I also recall our fun day of putt putt golf to show our support of his lovely bride Shirley when she was battling Scleroderma. They don't make them like Mr Conklin anymore. I will always remember him fondly.

My Uncle Robbie was such a great influence in my becoming an educator. I will always cherish how he treated me as a special person- even as a child. He always showed me love and we shared some good laughs, holidays and memories.

Dear Conklin family, I am so sad for your loss. I am sad for all of us who lost one of the truly most kind hearted, dedicated and passion filled man who cared for the betterment of young people there ever was. Thankfully, my family, Butch and Jeanne Thomas shared their special relationship with the Conklin's with us, their kids. I got to spend alot of time with wonderful people and Robbie was one of my favorites. He will be so very missed yet I'm glad his kind heart is with Shirley and hopefully my parents. Blessings and prayers for all of you. He was such a blessing to so many. Thank you for sharing him.

Mr Conklin was our Vice Principal at South High 1966-'68. He was a good man: strict but fair. We probably gave him a couple of grey hairs with our hi-jinks, as he occasionally had to roust us from JR's on S Gaylord. We all liked and respected him.
I have fond memories of Mr. Conklin, and I wish to give my sincere condolences to his friends & family.
RIP Mr. Conklin - you've earned it.

I had two great big brothers: Rob and Rich Conklin.
Rob has now gone on to be with his dear wife of many years: Shirley. I will always cherish the times we were together, even when we would disagree, our love and respect for one another tumped all. Rob was a force of nature in many regards and his presence in our lives will be greatly missed.
