Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Baum Family know that we recently made a small donation to the "Lead the Way Fund" in honor of Ryan J. Baum US Army Sergeant. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

One of my favorite memories of Ryan is when we would go thru airports and Id yell "BAUM" at him from across the terminal and we'd see how many people freaked out. Especially as we were being escorted to the front of the security line after the pre-screeners saw our military Ids. Ryan will always be my ranger in the sky.

Ryan and I were in the same platoon from basic training to RIP. He was an amazing person and I will never forget him or the good times we had. Im sad to say we lost touch after i left the army and I just today found out about his death while hoping to reconnect with my once great friend. If anyone knows where his memorial or grave is I would very much like to go visit. My email is [email protected]. To Amber and his family I am so sorry for your loss and I hope Leia knows how great of a man her father was.

My son Bryan served with Ryan in Iraq. Bryan was home on leave when he received the news. Bryan lost another great friend while there. Bryan too was wounded, received the Purple Heart. I cannot imagine the pain Amber and the Baums feel. I thank God for bringing Bryan home and pray constantly for the Baums. Bryan still speaks fondly of Ryan and misses him. God Bless you all and know we will never forget Ryan, Amber or Liea.

Was going through pictures today of Ryan, myself, and all the other medics at SOCM today and felt like writing on here again. The photos made me sad, but at the same time smile. Ryan was a funny dude. We had a lot of good times together and he is missed more each day. May God be with Ryan's family. You all have so much to be proud of.

Ryan Baum was brought to my attention through Mande when she wrote on my late husband CPL Richard Nelsons guestbook and told me the unfortunate news of Ryan and about the pain the family is going through especailly Ryan's wife. I was 20 years old when Ricky died in Iraq April 14th, 2009. It was one week short of our first wedding anniversary. I as well as my family are here for support. Mande mentioned wrighting a book and I wanted to say if there is anything I can do please don't hesitate to contact me. I understand the pains of grief and I'm so sorry for your loss as well. To Mrs Baum and family, my prayers are with you. Your husband is a hero and will not be forgotten. My heartbreaks at the pain you must feel and yet it also is enlightened at the pride you must feel as well and rightly so! It may sound crazy to some, but I was told by someone, that fallen soldiers are now guardians of the soldiers they left behind and to their families as well.
Thank you.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Amber,
I don't know if you remember me but I went to AIT with you and Ryan and to Basic with Ryan as well. I don't know the exact words to say that will express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Ryan was a great person and it was an honor to know him. I will keep your family in my prayers. Your daughter should know that her dad was a hero and the true definition of what an honorable Soldier should be. May God bless your family with the peace and understanding to get through this tragedy.

I am so sorry to have just heard about Ryan. My deepset sympathy goes out to Dana, Dick, Mande and Jason. I also would like to offer my condolences to his wife and daughter. This really saddens my heart especially at this time of year. I wish I had heard sooner, but I didn't. Ryan was a great kid and from what I've read he turned out to be an even greater man. My heart and prayers go out to all of you.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I had the honor of meeting Ryan in Ft. Benning in the winter of 2004. We became good friends and studied medicine at Ft. Bragg together until late 2005. He was a great person and an even better friend and soldier. One would be hard pressed to find and individual who cared so much for his fellow Rangers and his country. He put everything ahead of his own wants and desires. Whether it be helping someone study when they didn't understand a topic on an upcoming exam, giving someone a lift at two in the morning, or lending someone some cash when they were in a tight spot, Ryan was always there. He was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back. Those actions are what made Baum, Baum. He was one of the greatest men I've ever had the honor of calling, "friend". To Amber, I am so sorry. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your little girl. To his parents, you did a phenomenal job of raising such a great man. You couldn't have done better. I'm not good with words, but I hope that all of his loved ones know just how truly special of a person he was, and how proud they should be. I hope you can find the strength and courage in your hearts to find happiness again. Ryan and I shared many conversations about going to war, and I believe in my heart that if he had to pass away, he would be honored to do it for the country that he loves so much, the United States of America. You are all in my prayers.

Right now i'm not sure how to word this. Ryan is the 4th medic i've known who's lost his life overseas. I met him at Ft Benning after we graduated ranger school. My mother had passed away during the course and Ryan asked me a few times how i was doing. He had a great enthusiasm and energy for his job as a medic in the Army. With that passion and great work ethic he was a strong example to all around him. One of his favorite things to do was have all 40 of us in the group get down and do flutter kicks untill there was only one of us left doing it. Amber i am so sorry that you have to go through this. I know that you have a tremendous amount of pain inside but i also hope there's room for you to be extremely proud of your husband. Please make sure that your daughter knows that her father was a wonderful person and will always be an american heroe.
There are those, like myself, who will never forget SGT Baum. He will be an inspiration to me for the remainder of my life. I was shot twice on Christmas Day, 2005 in Baghdad and almost died. I will use that and the memory of friends like SGT Baum to inspire me every day.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!
Rest in Peace brave soldier; you did your duty with great honor, dedication, distinction and in the highest traditions of our great country.

As this war goes on it pains me to sign another fallen soldier's page. My son SPC Harry (Buck) Winkler was killed on November 12, 2006, I know all too well the pain the parents are going through. I stand ready with sincere invitation that if I can help emotionally in any way please contact me. I don't know the name of this great soldier but I do know the pain that you each face. May God protect the Parents, Spouses and Families of all our fallen soldiers and Bless them with His healing love as only He can. Please contact me at anytime. I'm here as a mother who understands the grief you too endure. Debbi
