Andrew Roberts Obituary

1997 - 2016
South Jordan, UT-Andrew (Drew) Brook Roberts, 18, South Jordan, passed away on August 24, 2016, near his home. Drew always did things on his own terms and in death was no different. He suffered from muscular dystrophy, but died in a tragic accident.
Born December 19, 1997, in Salt Lake City to Corey and Leisha Gould Roberts, Drew didn't want to be seen as a kid in a wheelchair. He didn't want to be defined by his disease or disability.
He did an internship with SpyHop, where they created a video game that brought awareness about teenage homelessness. His junior year of high school he started a club to create apps and video games. Drew is a 2016 graduate of Bingham High School.
Preceded in death by grandparents Donald Westerman, Mark Gould, Monica Ruth Roberts and father Corey. He is survived by his mother Leisha, brother Noah, sister Isabel, many close cousins including Trevin, best friends Hugo and Devon, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 30th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking provided on the north side of the building.
Online condolences may be offered to the family and a tribute video may be viewed at starksfuneral.com
Drew believed that we should just focus on the important things in life, which were family, friends, and experiences. He would put quotes and ideas on his Facebook just to get people to think and remember what was truly important in this life. Drew was wise beyond his years, and always seemed to make people feel better. He was the family vacation planner and loved to have everyone together. We're so grateful for the time we spent in St. George and San Diego.
I am drew the calm and caring cripple ninja
I wonder where the squirrels go during hurricanes
I hear my own thoughts
I see everyone and everything
I want nothing
I am drew the calm and caring cripple ninja
I pretend life is light but life gets heavy
I feel chill so chill I'm frozen
I touch up high into the sky
I worry I'm wasting my time
I cry thinking of all the people who feel worthless
I am drew the calm and caring cripple ninja
I understand that life is not serious
I say it's all good
I dream a million things but only do a few things
I try to do unexpected things
I hope I'll get to do everything I want to do

I went to school with Drew in elementary. I even accidentally pushed him out of his chair in PE one time. He was such a nice kid and I always enjoyed seeing him in Highschool. I wish I could´ve gotten to know him better. I still think about him often despite not having spoken for years, he probably wouldn´t have even remembered me but I know he is doing well right now and that gives me hope.

We, the faculty and staff at Bingham High along with many of his classmates, are heartbroken and stunned by Drew's sudden passing. Our hearts shed tears for Drew and his family. Drew was/is an amazing kid who worked hard to make the best of what his earthly life dealt him. When I think of what we mean by the Best of Bingham, Drew certainly comes to mind as worthy of that label. We will miss you Drew. Thank you for teaching us to appreciate the ease with which our healthy bodies get us through each day and to make the best of what we have. Your spirit and "can do" attitude have been an inspiration to those of us that were privileged to get to know you here at Bingham. I can't even imagine what an impact you will have when your wonderful spirit and initiative unite with your perfectly restored body. Look out heaven!

So sad to hear of Drew's recent passing. I was one of his 7th grade teachers and recall joking with him to get him to smile and him zipping through the halls in his wheelchair. Heaven has gained an amazing kid. Thoughts and prayers with the family and friends.

Dear Leisha and Family,

So sorry to hear of Drew's passing. Joel and I still think of your cute boys as they attended the Cub Scout Pack meetings with your family and grandparents on both sides. It was such a fun memory we have and the support for them from your family was always something that impressed us. Over the years, we've seen these independent, intelligent boys navigate everywhere and attend local schools with their friends. Drew's poem in his obituary is touching and profound of what a smart and capable young man he is of thinking, feeling and not letting his condition define who he is. Sending hugs your way! You are an angel mother to raise such a beautiful family.
Love you, Leisha,
