Angela Bowen Haight

Angela Bowen Haight died at her home in Menlo Park on September 25, 2012. She was 76. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer 12 years ago.
Angela is survived by her husband of 55 years, David Bruce Haight, Jr., and by their six children: David B. Haight III (Jenny), Sunnyvale, California; Wendy H. Kuhnen (Eric), Menlo Park, California; Dana H. Cattani (Kyle), Bloomington, Indiana; Susan H. Pinegar (Brett), Salt Lake City, Utah; Nancy H. Marsh (Tyson), Palo Alto, California; and Jonathan R. Haight (Veronica), San Jose, California. Angela and Bruce are also the grandparents of 20 grandchildren. Angela was born in San Francisco to Robert R. and Verona T. Bowen. She spent most of her life in California, including the last 52 years as a resident of Menlo Park. Angela graduated with the third class of Menlo-Atherton High School in 1954 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stanford University in 1958. During high school, she studied journalism and became editor of Bear Tracks, the Menlo-Atherton school paper. She also wrote a weekly column of school news for the local paper, The Palo Alto Times. While at Stanford, she covered local meetings for the Times as a free-lance reporter. As a parent, Angela participated actively with the PTA groups at Oak Knoll School, Hillview Middle School, and Menlo-Atherton High School. She also served in the Menlo Park Ward in many different capacities with children of all ages and with adults. Angela cultivated a rewarding interest in writing for children. A member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, she published over 100 pieces of fiction and non-fiction in publications such as Cricket Magazine. A number of those stories and articles have been anthologized by Highlights for Children and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich/Holt. Additionally, she published two easy-to-read books and, with her daughter Dana, a children's biography of A. P. Giannini, founder of Bank of America. Much of Angela's writing inspiration came from her own family life, as well as from her 25 years of working in the children's room of the Menlo Park Library. She was well known among the youngest patrons for her storytelling and colorful props. An avid lifelong reader, she loved to share her favorite books with others. For decades, Angela was an active member of book groups, lunch groups, adult swim classes, and a writing group, where she cultivated many enduring friendships.
Funeral services are Friday, September 28, 12 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1105 Valparaiso Avenue in Menlo Park. Interment is at the Salt Lake City Cemetery on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. (To locate the Bowen Plot, enter the Salt Lake City Cemetery at N Street and 4th Avenue and proceed up the hill.) Family and friends are welcome to join afterward at Huntsman Corporate Headquarters, 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City.
