Barbara DeWaal Obituary

1921 ~ 2017
Barbara Alison Cheshire DeWaal, 95, passed away peacefully of natural causes, surrounded by her family, at her home in Holladay, Utah on May 1, 2017. She was born December 4, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to James Douglas Cheshire and Maud Alice Brown. Barbara had the privilege of being raised by two loving mothers. Her birth mother died when Barbara was 14 years old, and she was subsequently raised by her second mother, Lydia Clara Naegelin Cheshire. She grew up with sisters Maudella, Margaret and Lydia Mae, brothers James, Barton, Robert and Glenn. She graduated from West High, and married Jacob DeWaal in the Salt Lake Temple November 4, 1942. They were married for 74 years.
We will always remember Barbara as a wonderfully happy, friendly and outgoing person. She was quick to laugh and kind to everyone. Her home was open to all; to neighbors, friends and strangers as well. She was a selfless, giving woman who always thought of others first. She willingly shared her gifts and talent for music. Singing and playing the piano brought great joy to her and pleasure to those around her. She was dedicated to keeping a daily journal. She and Jacob loved missionary work. Together they served LDS missions in the Philippines, Kenya, Detroit, Welfare Square and two inner-city missions in Salt Lake City.
Preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; two sons, Howard and Clark (Lorraine); along with three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her brother, Barton (Carolyn) Cheshire; children, Claudia (David) Wright, Alice (Larry) Riddle, Michael (Mary Ann) DeWaal, Matthew (Jolene) DeWaal, Ilauna (Danny) Parks, Adam (Jenny) DeWaal, Anderson Thomas; thirty-two grandchildren, sixty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held Monday, May 15, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. with the funeral immediately following at 11:00 a.m. at the Olympus 8th Ward L.D.S. Stake Center, 2700 East 4500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment will be at the Holladay Memorial Cemetery. Messages and tributes for the family can be posted at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com

Love you Grandma. I'm very sorry I could not be there to attend your funeral. I know you were never one to stand on ceremony and would say something like, "Tyler, it's just a funeral." You were a great woman and admired by so many people. I felt the impact of your service and influence in the remote parts of Kenya when I lived there, meeting those who were touched by your love of music and of Christ. I loved it when, during my youth, you would come say goodnight to us in the basement during our summer home leaves and would play "fore-badger, eye-winker" on our young faces. I love how easily amused you were. I am so grateful you raised my father in the way that you did. I hope to continue your dedication and kindness to others the rest of my life. Love, your grandson, Jacob Tyler DeWaal
