David Scott Obituary

April 2, 1927 ~ Sept. 13, 2013
Salt Lake City, Utah-D. Brent Scott passed away peacefully on September 13, 2013 at the age of 86 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Brent lived a full and fabulous life, and commented recently "he had done everything he had wanted to do".
Brent's life started on April 2, 1927 in Ogden, Utah born to Lola and David Amor Scott.
Brent was baptized into the LDS church in 1935 and was later ordained an elder.
In 1945, Brent graduated from Ogden High School where he was the Junior Class President and a Major in the ROTC. After graduating from high school, Brent joined the Navy and spent 14 months at the Great Lakes Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois and then the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.
After being honorably discharged Brent began attending Weber State College in pre-medicine studies and graduated in 1948. He attended the University of Utah and joined Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and was Chapter President in 1950. In 1951 Brent received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He continued on with graduate school working towards a Master's Degree in Psychology.
In 1952 Brent managed Rocky Mountain Gas Company in Salt Lake City. The same year he met Suzanne Moyle on May 10th at a Beta Theta Pi picnic and they were engaged soon after and on January 30, 1953 Sue and Brent were married.
In 1961 Brent began his business career working at the United Oil Company. In the same year he was honored to have baptized his father in the LDS church in Ogden.
He spent time in banking at the Bank of Salt Lake and was a stockbroker in the financial services industry.
In fall of 1968 Brent formed Scott Machinery Company, a John Deere dealership, which he operated successfully for the next three decades. His legacy continues, as the company is now in its 46th year, managed by his two sons. For 30 years Brent was involved in many leadership capacities in the national Associated Equipment Dealers group.
Brent was civically involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society where he was the Utah Chapter Chairman from 1954-1964 and with the Salt Lake United Way from 1968-1974. Brent also served as an elected Member of the Utah State Legislature from 1965-1967.
In 1977 he was elected a member of the University of Utah Alumni Association Board of Directors and then served as president from 1979 to 1983. This began a lifelong interest in the University of Utah where he served on the National Advisory Council and was founding member of the Advisory Board of the College of Social and Behavioral Science. He was a charter member of the original Crimson Club Board, and in 1995 received the University's Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Brent was active in the LDS church during the years his children were growing up. He taught Sunday School Classes, was Cub Scout Master, served in the Elders Quorum Presidency and was a member of the Stake Sunday School Superintendency. He always believed in the Mormon way and supported the church financially all of his life.
Golf became an obsession to D. Brent in about 1970 and he played it frequently for the next 45 years. He maintained active memberships at both the Salt Lake Country Club and the Springs Club in Rancho Mirage, California, so he could continue golfing year round.
Brent is survived by his wife of 61 years, Suzanne, and also by his four children; David Moyle Scott (Debra), Katherine Elizabeth Scott, Jeffrey Kent Scott (Sarah), Melissa Scott Elkins (Brian), also eight Grandchildren; Abigail, Lily and Isabelle Scott, Theodosia and Scott Henney, Shepard, Samuel and Angus Scott.
He is also survived by his sister Bonnie Maruri and brother Lynn Scott (Ann).
Brent was preceded in death by his mother and father and his sisters Dorothy and Lue.
Services will be held at Larkin Mortuary on 260 E. South Temple at 2pm on Friday, September 20, 2013, with a celebration of his life to follow at the Salt Lake Country Club from 4-6 pm. Burial will be private.
Brent would be honored with any participation to the D. Brent Scott Scholarship at the University of Utah College of Social and Behavioral Science. Donations can be sent to U of U Office of Development, 540 Arapeen Drive, Suite 250, Salt Lake City, UT 84108.

About 30 years ago, I worked for the Repertory Dance Theatre as a fundraiser. I was young and not very confident in this role. I called Scott Machinery to ask for a donation and talked with Mr. Scott, and he cheerfully said, "I'll send your company a $100 donation!" I was thrilled. But I was even more thrilled when he sent a $1000 donation. It was a real boost to RDT, and it did a lot to shore up my confidence. Later I met with him and he told me all about Scott Machinery -- we had a great conversation and he made me feel like chatting with me was the most important thing he had to do that day. When I've seen "Scott Machinery" I've thought of what a kind gentlemen he was, and how thrilling it was to be on the receiving end of his generosity. I know this was just a small incident to him but he made a big impression on me when I was young woman starting my career. I want to extend my sympathy to his family, and let them know that I've never forgotten his kindness.

Dear Scott Family:
Prayers are with you! I loved Brent. My boy Spencer who is 12 now went to Scott
Machinery when he was about 5. Brent took the time to let him ride on all the cool big stuff. It was great. I will see if I can get you some photos. Spencer still talks about it. Prayers are with you at this time. Best, Tony, Amy, and Spencer Bailey
