Gilbert Bertelson Obituary

1942 ~ 2017
Gilbert M. Bertelson (75) completed his mortal journey Thursday morning, December 7, 2017 after a brief but sudden illness. He was born in Provo, UT on August 9, 1942 to Bryce and Luzon (Fjeldsted) Bertelson. He attended Granite High School, the University of Utah, and completed an LDS mission in California.
He served for 24 years as a pilot in the US Air Force flying the T-37, T-38, F-111, and SR-71. He loved flying and aviation, he loved America, and he was very proud of his time in her service. This love lasted throughout his life as he was a popular speaker at events around the country - willingly sharing his supersonic facts, entertaining stories, and spiritual analogies to uplift and inspire everyone from youth groups to veteran's organizations.
His life in the military took him all over the world, living in Thailand, Okinawa, Hawaii, and England (and many others) but he returned to his roots in Utah with his final Air Force assignment being the commander of the ROTC at BYU. After retiring from the Air Force, he remained at BYU for another 15 years as the director of the EMBA program in the Marriott School of Management.
His greatest treasures were his family (especially his grandchildren), his faith, and his country. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed serving in numerous capacities throughout his life. His favorite pastimes were fishing, golfing, and serving in the Provo LDS temple.
His commanding personality, storytelling, quick wit, and passion for life will be missed by all who knew him. He made friends everywhere he went and his passing has left a void that will not soon be filled.
Gil is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Loye (Draayer), their daughters Cari, Marci (Aaron) Judkins, Brandi (Darin) Fielding, and Jaimi (Jeremy) Hyde, their 10 grandchildren, step brothers Dick (Diane) Ottosen, and Doug (Lesley) Ottosen, and step sister Gayle (Doug) Engh.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. in the Grandview 10th Ward chapel 1600 N 1880 W, Provo, UT. Viewings will be Friday 6-8 p.m. and Sat 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family online at WalkerSanderson.com.

I met and got to know Gil through the EMBA council and looked forward to the annual meetings. He and I shared a passion for flying and he was a great story teller and friend. Loved listening to him and calling him a friend, I was sad to read of his passing but know his faith has led him to a new and exciting journey.

Dearest Loye and Daughters,
I can only share how blessed I am to have known Gil, to have served with him and to be counted among his friends for more than 30 years. I cant ease your pain but I can confirm what you have known for so long. Gil was exceptional. A man among men. A husband, father and friend without peer. I smile when I think of him. I am blessed to have known him. My condolences to you and all who knew and loved him. May God bless Gil and your family. Dave Lawrence, friend

I just found out today about Gil's passing and feel sad. I have been doing his Christmas lights for 13 years He was such a neat man. I decided to look for my last texts with Gil and there it was on November 6 where he said he would put out the lights. Little did I know that would be my last interaction with him. I just am always amazed at how short this life is. I am glad I had the chance to know him. My sincerest condolences to his wife and family.

Gil was my dear friend and mentor. He was a man totally dedicated to his family, faith and country. Our lives intersected for only 4 years, yet, his helpful influence will last my lifetime. Loye, we wish you and your family the very best and we know your faith will make you whole.

I remember when I was 16 years and I got to tag along on a hike to the top of Mt. Timpanogos with my brother, Paul & my dad along with Gil & his dad. Paul & Gil were about 21 at the time and good buddies. It was 109 degrees in Utah Valley that day. Boy, did we have a view! And, many years later, Gil willingly came to Price, UT as my guest speaker at a Kiwanis function held at the Elks Lodge. Gil shared his flying stories and perspective on life willingly with such a smile! My life has been enriched by knowing him. Peace, love, harmony to all.

Gil was our Bishop while students at BYU and was so wonderful. We were sad we did not hear the news of his passing until after the funeral. Gil and Loye were kind enough to allow us use their home for your wedding reception and had David in their home for Thanksgiving when he had nowhere to go. We loved his stories, sense of humor and testimony. He'll be missed.

Dear Loye: I was shocked and extremely saddened to learn of Gil's loss, and wanted you to know how much R.J. and I admired both of you while our paths crossed during BYU service in the '90's. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time of grief and loss. Marilyn M. Snow

I have known Gil all my life. He was my 'big brother' since I lived in his home from age 3-16. He taught me to play ball, deal with bullies, and fish. I have been blessed with his company on a regular basis over the last 20 years as we met weekly / monthly . I was there when he died ...It qualifies me to say with that experience history that I have not known a man with more integrity, love of family and goodness overall in my years. I will miss him more than I can say.
