James Pyper Obituary

James William Pyper Eternal Sweethearts Our beloved Clan Pyper patriarch continued his eternal journey on 16 December 2008, after a 20-year, faith-filled cancer illness.Born 5 September 1934 to William Jones and Wilma Bjelke Pyper in Wells, Nevada, Jim was raised there as an only child of loving parents. Upon graduation from Wells High School, he attended BYU for a year before serving in Eastern States Mission 1954-1956. He returned to BYU and married his sweetheart, Diane Henry, in the Salt Lake Temple on 30 August 1957. After graduating from BYU in 1960 with BS and MS degrees, they traveled to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York to obtain his PhD in physical chemistry. Two young sons, Scott (Vicky) and Mark (Hillary), accompanied them, and a third son, Greg (Jenny), and a sister Heather, were born in Ithaca. Melanie was born in California where the family moved when Jim accepted employment in 1963 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of California, under the Atomic Energy Commission. Heather and Melanie died at birth, and then Tara (Morgan), Wendy, Tanya (Mike), David (Ingrid), Tammy (Stephen), and Michael (Denise) completed the family. Our Clan Pyper has grown to 45 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom dearly love Jim, and whom he loves deeply in return. He is so so proud of his posterity! When Jim retired in 1990 after 28 years, he and Diane began serving missions for the LDS Church. He had served as a bishop twice and on high councils for 14 years, but now re-discovered the joys of bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to both the living and the dead in the Greece Athens Mission, England Birmingham and Scotland Edinburgh Mission, Illinois Nauvoo Mission, Washington D.C. Temple Mission, and Family History Church Service Mission. Always a faithful home teacher and temple ordinance worker, he strived to be true to all his covenants and follow the living prophet. He was ever mindful of Joseph Smith's role in restoring priesthood power: this power was omnipresent with Jim as he lived to bless the lives of others and be blessed in his life repeatedly. Towards the end of his life he was "held together with priesthood baling wire." Our kind, honorable, gentle giant fought the good fight-his battle is won! Jim and Diane traveled much in their 51 years together, visiting over 30 nations. The last three trips in Europe and UK found them accompanied by as many as 11 children and spouses each trip. These trips were family history centered and brought joy, bonding, and eternal memories for all. What a sweet journey he and Diane have shared! He continually felt the urge to write of his roots, printing three books of Pyper ancestry, and was in the middle of writing his forth book. He also enjoyed dear forever friends, swimming, tennis "with his boys", train set-ups, Carmel coastlines, BYU sports, French cuisine, historical movies, piano, classical music, reunions, and, above all, the scriptures and doctrines in which he was well-versed. He loves his Savior Jesus Christ, and faithfully, humbly, obediently and prayerfully emulated Him. He's our exemplary hero! We love him dearly and anticipate our joyous reunion. Services will be held Saturday, 20 December 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Lehi 23rd Ward, 3200 N. 650 E., Lehi. Viewing's Friday 6-8 p.m. at the church and Saturday 9:30-10:30 a.m. Funeral Directors - Warenski's In remembrance, donations may be made to the missionary fund or PEF.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Pypers, my first memory of Bishop Pyper was when he conducted my baptism interview when I was turning 8 yrs old. I remember walking into his bishop's office in Livermore as nervous as I can remember and walking out as calm as I can remember. He had that gentle way of helping people feel calm and peaceful. Of course, our friendship continued as we followed your path to Tracy. We loved all the Pyper kids. In truth, it was in part because of the examples of Scott, Mark and Greg that I decided to serve a mission. For their example, for the patience of Bishop and Sister Pyper with respect to our idiotic teen pranks, and for the friendship of Tara, Tami, et al I am truly grateful. I wish we had known about Bishop's passing early enough to attend the services, however, please know that his legacy of faith is respected and honored in the Draney household. All of our love to each member of your family. TD

I was saddened to hear of Bro. Pyper's passing -- I was unaware of his health struggles, but know he is relieved of those now. I recall the last time we met was while he was on their mission in Nauvoo as I brought some YM from Minot ND on a church history trip. It was so good to see my former seminary teacher (Sis. Pyper) and her stalwart husband. I've always admired his kind and gentle mannerisms -- and no one has a warmer smile and eyes. He is truly a man worthy of emulation as evidenced by his good works as a father, husband, and servant of the Lord. May Heavenly Father bless you in this time of sorrow and may you find comfort in knowing through the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ that this is simply another step toward Eternal progression. Just think of the joyous reunion after this life's work is complete! :-) My best to all the Pyper clan, especially in this time of (temporary) loss.

Thirty Five years ago we moved to Livermore, California. Bishop Pyper welcomed us to the area. Our prayers are with the family at this time. We have many found memories of the time we spent with the Pypers. Mark and Greg were great babysitters for our children. All our love.

Our family is saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend, co-worker, former Bishop, and neighbor Jim Pyper. We are deeply indebted to the Pypers for their example of a strong united family and for having made it possible for us to raise our family away from the influence of city life. May you find strength and comfort in knowing he was greatly loved by all.

Dear Diane and Family:

Sharon and I were saddened to hear of Jim's passing. We know he is in a better place and without pain. What a wonderful and caring man who set an example for us all. It was my pleasure to serve with Jim and more importantly learn from his example and desire to serve the Lord. Jim loved the Lord and his family and it was evident in the conduct of his life as he quietly completed his assignments. We know the plan of salvation assures we will all see Jim again. We pray you may find some degree of comfort knowing Jim is with loved ones and will continue to serve the Lord he loves so much. May God bless you and yours now and forever.

Sister Pyper and family,

It is with fond memories that I recall your family living in Tracy. With Scott, Mark and Greg being older than I; I was able to look to them as examples of great priesthood holders. I know now as a father that it was because of good parents that you had such good children. May our Father in Heaven bless you at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sister Pyper and clan-- I grieve with you for your loss and rejoice with you in the comfort of the Gospel and the Plan of Happiness. Bro Pyper was a great man and role model, and I am thankful for the example he set for so many of us. He is a spiritual giant. I hope he and my dad get a chance to get together and share a few memories and laughs from the good ol' days in Tracy.

Dear Family,
I was interested in the Pyper name and very interested in this wonderful father and husband. My great grand father was Alexander Gardener Pyper whose parents emigrated from Scotland. I have two volumes of "Pyper History" compiled by Henry Woolley, also a Pyper desendent. I know this is a very difficult and special time for you all, but I would really be interested in your Pyper histories. Please accept my condolences and feel free to contact me at your convience.

May the Lord's blessings be with you all,

Marian Mudrow
