Jerry McCleary Obituary

Jerry L. McCleary 1935 ~ 2009 Jerry L. McCleary passed away peacefully on January 9, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. His family and loved ones were by his side. He was born in Murray, Utah on September 28, 1935 to William F. and Delsa C. McCleary. He was raised in Midvale, Utah and graduated from Jordan High School in 1953. While at Jordan he was an All-State basketball player, captain of the 1953 state championship team and named the state's most valuable player. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Shirla Ann Jones, of South Jordan, UT in 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. He attended the University of Utah from 1953 to 1957 on a basketball scholarship. "Jumpin' Jerry" was a starter on the varsity team for three years. Forever a "Utah Man," just as sure as the "U" would blink on the mountain following a Utah victory, so would Jerry wear his red blazer to church the following Sunday. After his collegiate career, Jerry continued playing basketball for many years in the county recreation program achieving much success and recognition. Jerry had a 32 year career in public education as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Jordan School District. He coached his Jordan High basketball teams to a state title and 4th place finish in 1963 and 1968, respectively. As an administrator, he worked as principal of Jordan High School and in 1981 was named Principal to open the new West Jordan High School. Upon retirement, the school honored its first principal by naming the football field, "McCleary Field." Jerry was a faithful member of the LDS church, serving in various callings including Bishop's Counselor, Stake High Council member, Bishop and Temple Sealer. He served as the Mission President of the Florida, Fort Lauderdale Mission from 1993 to 1996 and opened and presided over the Johannesburg, South Africa MTC from 2003 to 2004. Besides family and basketball, Jerry's other passions were slow-pitch softball and golf. He was named to the Utah Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame after obtaining numerous awards while playing many years for Priced Rite Trophies. After his softball playing days, golf became his favorite pastime and his clubs accompanied him everywhere he went. He loved to play new golf courses wherever he traveled. Jerry's life was centered around teaching, helping and working with the youth. He spent many hours as a teacher, coach and administrator loving, helping and supporting the students. As a mission president, he dearly loved and cared for his missionaries in the Florida, Fort Lauderdale mission. His love for the Elders and Sisters who entered the South Africa MTC touched hearts of many who had never felt such love before. He loved the youth when he served in the Branch Presidency of the singles ward and as a Bishop of the University of Utah Married Students Ward where he was known as "Grandpa Bishop." He is survived by his wife, Shirla; children, Larry (Cheryl), Ann Clover (Jim), Brian (Sandi), Robert (Trina) and Tara Marshall (Rob); brother, Kent (Sharla), two sisters-in-law, Arlene McCleary and Jane Sumner; 26 grand children and 11 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Donald (Kay). The family would like to express gratitude to the IHC Hospice nurses and the staff at Garden Terrace for their tender and loving care during the last weeks of his life. Funeral services will be Wednesday January 14, 2009 at 11a.m. in the Butler Stake Center located at 7035 Nutree Drive (3255 East). A viewing will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, located at 8090 S. State St, Midvale, and also just prior to the funeral services at the Butler LDS Stake Center on Wednesday from 9a.m. to 10:30am. Interment, South Jordan City Cemetery.

Sister McCleary,
We were saddened to read of Bishop McCleary's passing in the Church News. While we were only in the ward a few short months before Bishop mcCleary was released, his impact on us as our first bishop has been lasting. He taught me how to be a Priesthood leader. I will always remember him visiting our tiny apartment and setting the bar high for our new family by delivering the University 10th Ward goals. I learned what it meant to be part of a ward and to lift where I stand. Bishop McCleary will always be remembered in our home.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Love,

Nathan & Kara

Sister McCleary, My heart is so sad. "Sister Neff" wrote and told me (of course).

What can I say? I am a better person because Jerry McCleary believed I could be.

I love him, I miss him. And I love you!

Sister McCleary,

Lizzy and I were saddened to read in the the Church News about Bishop McCleary's passing. We were also sad to have found out the news too late to attend the services.

Bishop McCleary was an invaluable mentor to me and a dear friend. I will forever be grateful for the life lessons he taught me. Above all, he, through his interaction with you, taught me how to adore and respect my wife and stay madly in love for decades---Lizzy and I often commented that we hope to act like high school sweethearts in our golden years like you two did.

While I have dozens of wonderful memories of the Bishop, one of my favorites is the look on his face when we won back-to-back Stake Softball Championships and presented him with a "limited edition" softball signed by the University 10th Ward Elders Quorum. He was a proud "Grandpa Bishop" that day. What a wonderful man.

All our love,
Tim and Liz Conde

Sister McCleary,

May you and your family be comforted at this time of loss. The influence of Pres. McCleary as my mission president will never be forgotten. He believed in me at a time I had trouble believing in myself, and I will be forever grateful to him and you. It was also so special how you took the time to come to my wife and I's wedding and reception. God be with you President, until we meet again.

President and Sister McCleary made each of their missionaries feel that they were special. I still have various quotes from both of you written in margins of my scriptures. I looked forward to Zone Conferences when I could be taught by my dear President.
His love, admiration and respect for Sister McCleary often touched my heart. Their companionship set a standard for me of what I wanted my future marriage to mirror.
I will ever be grateful that I had the opportunity to serve with and be served by such wonderful people.

Goodbye, "My President", until we meet again.

I have fond memories of vice prinicipal McCleary from my time at Jordan High School. Although the wrestling team was never as high profile as the basketball or football teams Jerry always treated those of us on the wrestling team as though we were his basketball players. Whenever I was in his office he would ask how things were going and always made us feel as important as anyone else. That friendliness was appreciated by all of us. Deepest condolonces to the family of Brother McCleary. May the Lord bless each and everyone of you until you meet again.

In 1975 Mr. McCleary told me I'd never graduate at the rate I was Going.I had to go to night school to make it, all the while slowly realizing that he really DID care.In '76 I had the bakery make a cookie that fit on a pizza cardboard.I had the baker write"Pat, you'll never graduate" in frosting on the cookie. The night of
graduation as we were lining up to go into the gym, I pulled the cookie out from under my robe and gave it to him. "I figured this was the best way for you to eat your words, Mr. McCleary"! I saw him a few years later and he said he'd kept that cookie!God bless you, Jerry! You made a difference in this world!

I would like to offer my condolences to the McCleary family. Before Jerry hired me at West Jordan, the only McClearys I knew about were the great kids and basketball players at Butler Jr. High. All though I didn't have them in any of my classes I did have Robbie's wife, Trina (Rowley) in one. She was a super kid and you knew she would end up in a great family. Jerry McCleary was a great man and you knew that his kids would reflect the teachings and examples that he always set. He was the best principal that I worked for. If you messed up he would let you know it, and how to not make the same mistake again. Jerry would always support us and the kids. I remember one day that he came to my class door and called me out in the hall. He then gave me a big hug and told me he appreciated what I was doing for the kids. What a great thing for him to do! He was always doing things like this for the faculty and students. He will never be replaced or forgotten. May God bless you in these troubled times.

It is with mixed emotion that I write this note; I'm so glad "Coach", and teacher, the indomitable Mr. McCleary influenced my life so profoundly for good. He was my hero, & sometimes my protector. I am happy he is free from the horrible clutches of Alzheimer's dementia. On the other hand, I grieve with the rest of the people whose lives he touched for good. My favorite McCleary memory was of him standing at the foul line in the gym and shooting free throws - (the ball bounced back to you after swishing through the net if the shot was done correctly). I watched him do more than 90 foul shots in a row. When he missed, he wanted to know if anyone wanted to bet a milkshake they could beat him shooting foul shots - yeah right - as if!! The world is a sadder place now that he is gone. In order to achieve balance again, it will take a great number of innocent babies to be born to balance the good he did here and the love he radiated that we will no longer have. God bless you all - Verla and family, Kent, Sharla, and their family, and to everyone else who was blessed to know him.

Jerry will always be the Papa Bear who took great care of his little cubs when we played together on the Priced Rite Trophies softball team years ago. I had great respect for the gentleman he always was, the competitive drive he displayed with great character, and the great example he always shared to us younger wild ones. He also had great patience with our immaturity. He was a great example in his role in education as well, and the lives they touched will all be better for having had an association with Jerry and his lovely wife.

As a student at WJHS, I don't know if I appreciated Mr. McCleary like I should have. Now, as the parent of teenagers, and knowing what I want for them to achieve, and what I hope they will value, I appreciate the things that he tried to instill in us. It feels like the passing of an era for the students that he presided over. I know that his profession of choice was probably very difficult at times, because I know first hand how tough teens can be, and I am grateful to him for the years of service that he rendered, trying to keep us all moving in the right direction. I wish the Lord's blessings of peace on your family and I hope that you find comfort in the knowledge of where he is today.

Jerry will always be one of my favorite individuals. He was a great mentor and friend who gave me many opportunities while we worked at West Jordan High. He made me and my wife feel part of the team. I know he also supported my career advancements but his biggest challenge with me was to imporve my golf game ( he would suggest changes after every stroke). Our team even won first place in the district administrator tourney. May God bless the family. Jerry is in a better place.

Jumpin' Jerry L, as many of us called him, was a wonderful man and leader as principal of the West Jordan High Jaguars! I was an ok student, but couldn't run as fast as others and almost didn't graduate. As a senior, I talked with him and expressed my concern over not being able run as fast and not being able to graduate as a result, but that if I had broken my leg (or some such injury) and had a dr note, the class (and Cooper's test) would have been waived. I put in my effort and he talked with the teacher and came to an agreement that led to me being able to prove myself and graduate with my class in 1989!

In addition to the many others before me in this guest book, I thank you all so much for sharing him with all of us. We are eternally grateful to have had his love and support in our lives! I leave my condolences with the family and express my thoughts from Moroni 8:3!

Dear Brian & Sandi,

Our hearts go out to you, and our prayers go with you, during this time.

We sorrow in the loss of your Father. I do not recall ever meeting him, but the stories my Father and his Brothers tell of Jerry McCleary are the things legends are made of. Not only was he an outstanding Basketball Player, but I have it on good authority that he could tear it up on the Ball Diamond also.

More than that though, he was a man of God. For that I am truly grateful. It is no wonder that you were such an outstanding missionary and touched so many lives, mine included. I am truly blessed because of the experience.

May the knowledge's of God's plan of Happiness see you through this very difficult time.

All our Love, to you, your sweet mother, and your extended family !!!

Jerry was my driver's education teacher at Jordan High School in 1974 while he was serving as assistant principle. He was ever so patient even when I would almost drive into the side of someone's garage. He would lighten the moment with his sense of humor and buy us doughnuts at the end of our driving sessions. He had great courage to sit at my side in one of the student driver cars for two weeks. I have always remembered his kindness and patience towards me. I consider myself a pretty decent driver now and attribute it to Jerry being my "driving coach,"

I was saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. He was a wonderful man and example to me, and I respected him immensly. He was a terrific guy to hang out with and golf with, and my father and I had a wonderful time evertime we went with Jerry. My mother and father truly feel a loss at losing their dear friend, and as their son, I too feel a sense of loss. For your entire family, I pray the Lord will surround you all with his arms of love and affection at this brief time of seperation, and that it will be a small moment to you all before you reunite with him at on the first tee again..... No doubt, Jerry will have his driver in hand, and will be the first tee time of the day! God bless you all, and Tara, God bless you too with the passing of your dad.

Mr. McCreary was my P.E. teacher at Jordan High school in 1972. I remember he taught us how to bowl of all things and I still remember his pointers today although I rarely get past 100 pts. I was not terribly gifted at sports, but in his PE class, that didn't seem to matter. He gave everyone equal chance to learn and grow. He demanded we respect each other and didn't allow bullying.

He was the best PE teacher I ever had.

President McCleary was an amazing leader and example to all those with whom he came in contact. I had the honor of serving under his direction while on my mission, and feel like I am a better person, just because I know him and his wonderful wife. I will never forget the evening he came to inform me that my grandfather had passed away. His sincere concern for me and my feelings at such a sensitive moment truly meant everything to me. I know that he's in a much better place now, but it's hard to imagine this world without him and his amazing example!

Wonderful Smile, that is what I will remember... He was always smiling & if he gave you a wink, it was even better. I went to Jordan High School & when Jerry is the Vice Pricipal & your dad's cousin, you really can't get away with anything. I really appreciate the time he gave me & the confidence needed to grow-up.
No matter where you were when you saw him, he always had a wonderful SMILE!!! Thanx Jerry.

Dear McCleary Family,
I just want to send my heartfelt love for you, and the amazing man you call "Husband" and "Dad." I have many wonderful memories being a teenager in your home, and having wonderful conversations with Jerry, Shirla, and Tara.
Always a giant smile on his face, alway's accepting of what a teenage daughter and her friends brought his way.
Shirla, you and Jerry made such a big difference in my life, and believe me I needed it. May you all continue to feel his love and guidance in this earthly life.
Sincerely,

Jody Sceili

Dear McCleary Family:

My deepest sympathies for your loss. As the principal at WJ High, all of us knew that Mr. McClearly always had the best interests of the students at heart. If he saw us in the hallways during classtime, we never had to worry about being in trouble, he would just chat with us for a minute and send us back to class. He was a wonderful man and made a positive impact in the life of so many!

You didn't need to be on the team to learn basketball from Jerry. You didn't need to be sent to the principals office to benefit from his fair wisdom. You just needed to watch. An unforgettable man ,your dad was, Larry. It's not hard see where you get your work ethic and energy. My codolences to you and your family.

Jerry & I were classmates in the 5th grade. Our teacher was Mrs.Hurd. In my 11 year old mind, I was 'in love ' with him.The name in the obit page this morning jumped right out at me.When I was in the 6th grade my family moved to Manti, UT. Funny what your mind remembers after so many years. My condolences.

Dear McCleary Family,
Mr. McCleary was a fantastic person. As a teenager, we do not always recognize gifts that are given to us, but I know that he truly was a gift and cared for our school and the students. He was a class act.
My sympathy to your family.

Dear Sister McCleary, I'm so sorry for your loss, and for the decline which has been hard to bear. As you know, you and Pres. McCleary helped hundreds of missionaries in the Ft. Lauderdale Florida mission. I am thankful for all that you both did for me and for all of us. There are so many wonderful memories, and you truly were like parents away from home, attending to our spiritual and temporal needs, and doing all you could to help us have successful and happy missions. I'm sure I speak for many when I say that those experiences are a standout part of my life, that when I reflect on them it is with so much happiness and gratitude for an amazing, unforgettable experience that will bless forever. Pres. McCleary was very familiar with the scriptures and the Savior in the way he did things. I remember that he was sometimes very patient with our jokes and silliness. I also remember how my personal testimony of priesthood power was strengthened when he came to my area to bless me when I was sick (he came with Travis Pullins who was visiting the mission). I had felt so sick and weak for a while before I felt I needed something beyond medical intervention. I was restored to a strength that I had not felt in a long time. He left his mark on me and so many others. May the Lord bless you and your family now as you continue life's journey. Much love, Hermana Robinson

President McCleary was truly one of the good guys. I always noted the special way in which he treated his lovely wife; I always appreciated that. Presiden McCleary will truly live on in the hearts and minds of the people who knew him. I will always consider him a formidable influence and someone who touched my heart and soul. I'm glad his struggle has ended. Until we meet again!

President McCleary,
I hope you know the impact you had on my life. I will never forget the day Elder Wilburn and I welcomed you and Sister McCleary into the Florida Fort Lauderdale Mission. You were so excited and we instantly felt the love and friendship that both of you had for us and the other missionaries. You were such a great example of service and Christ-like love. Thank you President for all you did for me. Much of who I am today is because of your great example. Sister McCleary, we love you so much. We are so sorry for your loss. President McCleary told me to look for someone like you when I came home and looked for my spouse. Those attributes of kindness, fun and testimony were part of what he loved about you and I was blessed to marry someone much like you. We love you. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

One of the greatest blessings and opportunities of my life was to be a missionary with President McCleary in the Ft. Lauderdale Mission. I met him and his dear wife while I was in the MTC as they were there too and I was able to serve along side him for a number of months. Those months were the best of my mission. He and Sister McCleary were literally my parents away from home and I grew to love them as family. President McCleary was one of the best persons I have ever met. He was a man of great integrity who treated all people the same and was always more than willing to help anyone, regardless if he knew you or not. He always saw the good in everyone and knew how to bring it out of them. I will truly miss him as though he were a part of my family. I can't begin to number all of the lessons I learned from him or all of the good times I had along side him and Sister McCleary. After the mission I had been able to stay in good touch with him and Sister McCleary and my wife and kids have gotten to know them and I am grateful for that. We will miss you, but just as you said many times during the mission, "This too will pass" and we can't wait to see you again. Until then, drive it straight and long and Go Utes!!!

It's sad to hear of the passing of a fellow "Beetdigger", and as Beetdiggers go, Principal McCleary is legendary. As my Principal I still remember him policing the halls with his walkie-talkie, chatting it up with students, joking, smiling, but when the situation warranted, he'd firmly and fairly dish out the disipline. He was a good man (and "U" man as well !) and I remember my parents and Uncles frequently telling me what a great ball-player he was. Sincere condolences to the McCleary family....he will be missed.

Larry

Our condolences, your father was a real gentleman. I had the opportunity to meet and visit with him several times in the Salt Lake Temple while he was there for Sealings. He was so kind and was an example of goodness, patience, and honor. It is obvious how you came to be the good man that you are. May you and your entire family be blessed with much comfort in the coming days as you celebrate your fathers good life. It has only been 8 months last Tuesday that we lost our Patriarch and it is so different without his constant presence. You will find comfort as we do in the remembrance of his teachings, example, leadership, and mostly his patient Love. Give your dear mother all the support you can, and enjoy your time. Your friends, John & Peggy Knaphus

My condolences to the McCleary family. I was one (of thousands) who had Mr. McCleary as my high school principal.

The last time I saw Mr. McCleary was in 2003 at the San Diego Temple. He was just getting ready to head to South Africa for his MTC President assignment.

As we chatted I noted that he hadn't changed a bit since his retirement. He looked exactly the same and was just as energetic as he was in 1990.

All the best to the family. I wish you peace during this time.
