John Murdock Obituary

John R. Murdock  John R. Murdock, age 88, died Monday, September 16, 2002 at Canyon Breeze Senior Living, Orem, Utah, of complications from pneumonia. His health had deteriorated following a pedestrian/car accident several years ago. John was born June 8, 1914 in Heber City, Utah, the fourth child of Nymphas and Catherine Hicken Murdock. He completed his schooling with a B.S. in accounting from Brigham Young University. He married Maxine Lewis, then began his career as a high school business teacher in Helper, Utah. This was followed by work as office manager for the Utah State Employment Office; bookkeeper for the Tungsten mines in Cherry Creek, Nevada; bookkeeper for several businesses in Provo, Utah; as well as running an accounting practice from his home. Bookkeeping for several car dealers began a life-long interest in used cars. After obtaining his car dealers license, John also became involved in politics. An active Democrat, he served as Utah County Auditor and joined the Provo Chapter of the Kiwanis Club. He finished his formal career as business manager for Timpanogos Mental Health Center.  His life was further enriched by his membership in the LDS church. He held various callings, his favorites being those of home teacher, Sunday School president and a member of several bishoprics. He delighted in sharing in the exploits of his children and grandchildren. After separating from Maxine, his life was blessed by friendships with Mildred Ellis and Rhoda Haller. He is survived by three children: J. Larry (Romanie) Murdock of Pocatello, Idaho; Chad L. (Remae) Murdock, M.D., of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Mala Ree "Molly" (Tom) Broadbent of Gaithersburg, Maryland; seven grandchildren; and one great-grand-child. He is also survived by three sisters: Norma (Bob) Burkhardt of Henderson, NV; Thora (Lyman) Bingham of Menlo Park, CA; and Catherine (Melvin) Dugger of Kearns, UT; and four brothers: N. Carl (Vivian) of Alpine, UT; Barney H. (Grace) of Milford, UT; Roy P. (Marilyn) of Eugene, OR; and Niff P. (Eileen) of Augusta, SC. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Fay (Bud) Hilton (Cyril) Hicken; Fern (Clyde) Freeman; and one brother, Joseph O. (Josie). Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m. at Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street. Friends are invited to call from 12 noon until the time of service. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.

To the Murdock Family:

I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father. When my family moved to Provo, I was in the 3rd Grade. Brother Murdock was a Counselor in our ward Bishopric. He always had a smile on his face and was friendly to the kids in the Ward all the time. Over the years, we received awards for attendance in our meetings and I still have the books I received that have some of his thoughts and his signature inside. I remember times going over to your house on University Avenue and enjoyed feeling the spirit there.

You have a good family and heritage to carry forward.
