Thirty years ago my husband Tim and I started our married life in a University of Utah young married ward. John Pingree was a fine Bishop. I remember his kind and cordial visit when our first child was born. I remember a Christmas ward social held in the Pingree home with some wonderful hospitality from Carmen and Bishop Pingree. I remember a temple recommend interview that stands out from among the many I have participated in. Reading his obituary was very inspiring, such a fine example of a consecrated life. My sincere condolences to the Pingree family.

So sorry to learn about John's passing. We have been good friends for the past 60 years since working together as missionary companions in Argentina. John and I were given the responsibility to conduct a week-long open house for the first LDS chapel in Argentina, located in the town of Caseros. Although I was blessed with other great missionary companions, none could compete with John's energy, resourcefulness, humor and great mind. Upon returning from my mission John invited me to live at his home in the Avenues for a year while my parents were on a mission in Chicago. He later served as an Usher at my wedding, and became a must-visit on my annual pilgrimages to Salt Lake. I will miss him like a brother, and send my deep condolences to Carmen and his kids.

John was one of my best friends and the only one that I've stayed close to from the Argentine Mission (1960-63). He was a wise, steady, fun and inspirational mentor. He and Carmen were married the same year as Marilyn and me. We have loved both of them ever since and they have made us feel that it was reciprocal. Some day we hope to be where he is and to enjoy "the same sociality that [has existed] with us here"(D&C 130:2)!

John Pingree was a wonderful man and extraordinary mission president. The love he showed us as missionaries is something I still feel today. He was a true disciple of Christ. To sister Pingree, please accept our deepest sympathies and most sincere condolences on the passing of President Pingree. I will look forward with faith to the day I can give him "un fuerte abrazo" once again.

Difficult to say farewell to our special friend, John. We cherish our memories of time spent together in Boston, Salt Lake City, and Salamanca, Spain. John loved to tell stories of his unique Cannon family history, and of his part in our courtship and subsequent marriage. John had the ability to relate to all people, and make each one feel respected and valued. In our last in person visit and subsequent phone conversations, John told us how much he loved us, and how much our friendship meant to him. What a wonderful gift we have been given.

My husband and I knew John from the perspective of parents of a child with autism. We had immense respect for his many amazing civil and academic accomplishments, but it was his kindness, humility and humor toward his trial of a child with autism that touched our hearts most profoundly. We so deeply admired the love and tenderness which he and Carmen felt toward their sweet son, Brian. We send our love and sympathy to the entire Pingree family.

President Pingree was my mission president. He and Sister Pingree were my parents-away-from-home. I have a lot of great memories of seeing him, smiling brightly and with love as I'd file into a monthly interview or mission conference. Some 15 years after my mission I became aware that, what I believe to be, the most important conversation in my life happened in a quick, 8 minute, one on one interview. How he acted and what he said then, I carried with me. And his behavior and words carried me through the most trying time of my life. His example then helped me see the length and breadth of God's love for his children. I'll be forever grateful for his love, kindness and example and that I got to spend time under his watchful eye.

Presidente Pingree was my mission president and it was a great honor to serve under him and his wonderful wife, Hermana Pingree. They led our mission with such love and care and garnered the respect and dedication from us all. I was blessed to have also spend some time with him on Temple Square less than a year ago, when we met up around general conference time. He had the same twinkle in his eye that he always had. He had an amazing way of connecting deeply with you very quickly. His love of the Savior and the church shined in all of his actions and words. A dedicated and humble servant of the Lord will be missed on this earth and put to great use on the other side of the veil!
