Joseph Soelberg Obituary

Joseph Max Soelberg 1920 ~ 2008 TUCSON, ARIZONA: Joseph Max Soelberg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away at his daughter's home in Tucson, AZ, on May 6, 2008, at the age of 87 due to age. Max was born May 15, 1920, in Idaho Falls, ID, to Joseph Soelberg and Leona Smart. He was the oldest of four boys. He grew up in Ogden, UT, and graduated from Ogden High. He received an Associate's degree in engineering from Weber State College. At the age of 19 he entered the Utah National Guard and served under his father. He became Sergeant of the 145th Field Artillery. He later met the love of his life, Evelyn Garr and married in the Salt Lake Temple January 20, 1944. Together they had two daughters, and later Evelyn became ill with leukemia. She passed away at their home in Salt Lake when the girls were young. Max later met Delores in Salt Lake, fell in love and they were married on February 18, 1954, in the Salt Lake Temple. Six children were born to them and they raised the eight together in Bountiful for 40 years. He was employed at Continental Bank in Salt Lake for many years and other financial institutions. Max had a love for music and for a significant part of his life he performed as a member of the Swanee Singers. His family loved his hard working abilities and the examples of his love and testimony of Jesus Christ. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many church positions. He favored his service in the scouting program as Explorer Leader and High Adventure Leader in the Richards Ward in Salt Lake and 12th Ward in Bountiful. He held many fond memories of his scouting years. He instilled in the youth the importance of the scouting spirit and the gospel of Jesus Christ. After Delores passed away last year in Meadow, Utah, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, to be under the loving and devoted care of his daughter Carolyn. We will greatly miss his endearing humor and constant love. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Leona Soelberg, wives, Evelyn Garr and Delores Stott, daughter, Judy Kay (Lee) Burnham, and brothers, Verl LeRoy, William LaMar, and Donald Eugene. Max is survived by his children, Carolyn (James) Scott, Stephen (Terri) Soelberg, Karl (Pam) Soelberg, Darlene (Rick) Peterson, Donna (Doug) Schmidt, Daniel (Ann Marie) Soelberg, and Mary (Gene) Vernon. He leaves a legacy for 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren to follow. Funeral services will be held Sat., May 10, 2008 at the Meadow LDS Chapel at 12 noon. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Olpin Funeral Home. Max showed me the location where Great Grandfather, John Willis, and Great Grandmother, Anna Lena Willis, built their cabin in Sandy, Utah (about 7600 South on the west side of what is now called Creek Road). They lived there for a few years before John requested and received a 140 acre Land Grant from the U.S. Government (south of Grantsville) and they then moved to Grantsville, Utah where they lived until they died.

My sincere coldolences to Max's family. I remember how we looked forward to Aunt Leona and Unkle Joe and their boys driving down from Ogden to attend the family get-togethers at my Grandparents home in Grantsville. (My grandparents were Harry and Adah Smart Willis.) Max was always so popular, friendly, and fun to be around. In later years, it was always great to get together at the Smart family reunions at the LDS Church on the hill near 13 E. and 7800 S. Max had a rich knowledge of our family's history. Only a few of us left now, but I treasure the memories. I send my love to his posterity.

I can't begin to tell the Soelberg family how sorry I am for their loss.
I too lost my Mother and Father within a short time about a year ago, and feel the pain of their passing to this day. At least we can take solace in knowing that they are together again and with other loved ones. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Joe, but I have worked with his son, Steve for many years and know him to be a fine, upstanding person which reflects on his upbringing.
Again, I am very sorry for your loss.
