LaNola Smith Obituary

LaNola Gudmundsen Smith 1936 ~ 2003  LaNola Gudmundsen Smith, beloved wife of Joseph Dale Smith, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2003, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born November 24, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Gilbert and Beulah Wilbur. Mom brought laughter, love, friendship and joy to all those who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Dale, and all seven of her children (of whom she was inordinately proud): Jon (Teri); Christine (Raphael) Larrinaga; Kathleen (Brandt) Parker; Roxane (Steve) Sroczynski; Patrick (Jana); Thomas (Krista); and Michelle Smith. She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren: Nicole; Robert;  Michael; Caryn; Kyle; Ashley; Cameron; Natalie; Surya; Erin; Abigail and Kayla. She is also survived by her brothers: Norman (Judy) and Clyde (Debbie) and her extended family and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mom was very active in St. Olaf Parish and devoted many years of service to both the Parish and the school. She was elected as "St. Olaf Woman of the Year" in 1996. She worked as the school secretary for many years and was also very active in the Girl Scouts. She was extremely proud of her role as director of the RCIA program, especially as she was a convert herself. At the time of her death, she was helping to found the St. Olaf "Ladies of Charity", an association of the Daughters of Charity. Mom was a terrific role model to many, but particularly to her children and grandchildren. She will be missed for "Grandpa & Grandma Day" that she hosted, for lazy afternoons spent camping at the Pinnacles, for her love of the outdoors and gardening. The family wishes to extend its thanks to all those who offered their support and prayers during her illness: her many friends; Dr. Anna Beck and Dr. Richard Cline and their staffs; and to Monsignor Rudolf Daz for his pastoral care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, Mom requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 941 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Olaf's Catholic Church, 1800 South Orchard Drive in Bountiful. A vigil service will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at 8:00 p.m. also at the church, where friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Committal: Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street in Salt Lake City. Funeral Directors, Neil O'Donnell and Sons.
