Larry Bowthorpe Obituary

Larry Ison Bowthorpe

April 25, 1941 ~ February 16, 2023

The Original G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) Larry Ison Bowthorpe was called to his Heavenly home on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 2:30 A.M. If you know Dad, you know it was his favorite time, day or night, and you've heard the Chinese dentist time joke hundreds of times!

Larry was born at his home in Holladay, Utah on April 25, 1941 to Nephi Ford and Caroline (Tester) Bowthorpe. He would tell you how much he loved his childhood growing on the Bowthorpe Homestead in Holladay surrounded by Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins! It was filled with adventure! Playing in the Hollow on Spring Creek, riding Horses on the Farm and Hiking up Mount Olympus.

Dad met his lifelong sweetheart Judi Mills at Olympus High School 65 years ago. Since then he has been her boyfriend, lifetime partner and best friend, through the thick and thin.

Larry and Judi were married in Millcreek, Utah on October 2, 1959. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple. Together they built an amazing life, raising 3 wonderful sons in a home they built in Midvale, Utah, which quickly became the favorite neighborhood gathering place, it was as close to Mayberry as you could get.

Mom and Dad loved their neighborhood and community! They were very involved with scouting and youth sports; Larry was especially proud of the time he coached the Hillcrest/Union All Star Team in 1976 and won the WBBA World Series Championship!

One of Dad's favorite things was to spend summers boating on Flaming Gorge. Not only did they enjoy taking the youth and friends on boating adventures, they also passed that love onto their entire family! And we would all tell you it is our favorite place.

Dad started Hod Tending at the age of 15, he knew he had found his niche and loved Masonry Work! He was naturally gifted and had great mentors; Rex Carter, Sid Severson, and Don McCormick! Dad was an Honest, hardworking Craftsman! He struck out on his own in 1965 and never looked back! Dad was a highly respected and sought after Contractor for 40+ years, and in 2010 was awarded the Lifetime Achievement by his peers and the Utah Masonry Council. Dad taught his sons and many others the masonry trade, how to work hard, and that a man is no better than his word.

Dad was bigger than life and could make a friend anywhere he went, he was such a people person. And as much as he loved people, he has always loved, protected and would do anything for his family, while passing along his wisdom. He was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, mentor and friend.

Dad's last years were hard but he's tough and fought hard to stay here with his sweetheart and family. We are grateful to know that he is no longer in pain, and that he is in a much better place.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents (Nephi and Caroline Bowthorpe), younger sister Carole Bowthorpe Parker, sister in law (Nan Bowthorpe), parents in law (Rex and Mern Mills) and brothers in law Kent Mills and Bill Stafford.

He is survived by his wife and eternal companion Judi Bowthorpe, his sons: Blake (Karen), Joe (Cindy) and Tony (Kris), his grandchildren: Lindy, TJ, Jamee, Broc, Lacey, Austin, Tyler, Bria and their partners, 14 great grandchildren and numerous bonus family! His siblings: Gayle Bowthorpe, Ford and Deanna Bowthorpe, Lyle Parker, Diane Stafford, and Jack and Bardee Mills.

We will be celebrating Larry's Life on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 S. 700 E., Draper, UT 84020. Viewing will be held 11:00 am-12:45 pm.

Celebration of life services at 1:00 p.m. Open Mic, we would love to hear your stories.

Burial will follow at Memorial Holladay Park, 4900 S. Memory Lane, Holladay, Utah 84117.

Larry was a customer and friend for 20+ years. Always a joy to deal with, truly a man of his word. Hard working and honest, I´m proud to have known and worked with him. He will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him.
