Norma Jones Oreno Carter

Norma Carter Obituary

Norma Jones OrenoCarter 6/11/1912 ~ 5/8/2004  Our beloved mother and grandmother, Norma Jones Oreno Carter, passed away May 8, 2004. She was born June 11, 1912 in Eureka, UT to Peter and May Jones. She was the fifth of six children and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Norma married John P. Oreno June 19, 1929 in Provo and they later became eternal companions in the Salt Lake LDS Temple October 1, 1952. Their marriage was one of great love and affection and they were dedicated parents to their six children. Norma was a true example of service and charity. She faithfully held responsible positions in the presidencies of the Relief Society, Primary and MIA in the LDS Church. She was vice president of the Woodrow Wilson PTA and president of the South Salt Lake Lady Lions. And just to continue her legacy of service, she graduated from the Salt Lake Community College with her License in Practical Nursing. She worked in the nursery at the old General Hospital and was later asked to set up and be In-Charge Nurse of the nursery at the 'new' Valley West Hospital, where she also served as president of the Valley West Hospital Credit Union. Working with newborns was her first love – put a baby in Norma's arms and she was happy. In 1971, Norma and John were called to serve in the Ohio Mission. It was a highlight in their 47 years together. John passed away September 30, 1976 after a long illness. Norma remarried John Joseph Carter October 3, 1983 and moved to California. She loved the California climate and the companionship of John Carter, but he passed away suddenly June 22, 1990 and Norma returned to Salt Lake. Norma was blessed with great musical talents. She never had a music lesson but could play the piano, organ, accordion and ukulele. She also had a beautiful, natural alto singing voice. Norma's greatest contribution to the world around her was the unselfish way she scattered love and compassion to those around her. Her talents, kindness, quick wit, and unconditional love will be greatly missed by all of us. Norma is survived by her six children, John (Margaret) Oreno, Salt Lake, Larrie (Shirley) Oreno, West Jordan, Arlene (Bob) Durham, Redon-do Beach, CA, Karren (John) Fairbanks, Salt Lake, Eugene (Mary) Oreno, West Valley City, David (Loice Ann) Oreno, Wooster, OH; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchil-dren; and eight great-great-grand-children. Preceded in death by grandson, (John) Perry Oreno. Funeral services will be held Wed-nesday, 12 noon, at Millcreek Stake Center, 4220 South 420 East. Friends and family may visit Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and Wednesday at the church, 11-11:45 a.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.

To Karren, and family. We are so very lucky to have a Heavenly Father who loves us and sends peace and comfort in difficult times. As you know the years melt away, and wonderful, cherished memories fill our hearts as we are called to mourn. Your mom has finished the course and endured to the end, and has now been welcomed home. The sorrow felt here is more than equaled with the rejoicing beyond the veil. She has stepped beyond into the arms of loved ones, as a vibrant beautiful young woman. My prayers are with you at this time. Love, Joanne

Dear Karren and Family,

Sorry to hear about your mother. I always enjoyed the few times I went to her house when I was younger. We are related somewhere back some way, but I don't know how. I just remember I took every opportunity to go you her house, probably to see that pretty daughter she has. Karren, it was good to see you at the Dodge dealership a few months ago. You are still just as beautiful as I remembered you back in my early teens.

I hope you are all comforted by the knowledge of eternal life. As we live each day, we should be engaged in a good cause of serving others much the way mothers serve family.

I will try to get to the viewing or the funeral to pay my respects to a great woman that I knew only as a teenager but enjoyed her friendship and hospitality. She is one of those people you can't forget once you've met her.

I wish you the best in dealing with the future without her. I know good memories will linger in your hearts each day as you remember her impact on your lives.

Sincerely,
