PHIL JENSEN Obituary

Phil Jensen 1918 ~ 2010 Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Phil Dunn Jensen returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at age 92. Phil was born in Logan, Utah, on February 27, 1918, the eldest of two children born to Niels and Florence Dunn Jensen. He graduated from American Fork High School in 1936. While in high school, he served as senior class president, sang in many school productions, played on the tennis team, was on the debate team and also played clarinet in the school band. In 1938, Phil was called to serve an LDS mission to Denmark. As mission secretary, he assisted in the evacuation of missionaries from Europe in 1939. He was reassigned to the Western States Mission. It was here that he was to meet his future sweetheart and wife, Ruth Hazen, who was also serving as a missionary. Phil and Ruth were married on August 27, 1941, just before Phil was inducted into the armed services. During World War II, he served as director of Ground School for Instrument Training and attained the rank of captain in the U.S. Army-Air Corp. After the war, it was his assignment to instruct those men leaving the service of their rights under the G I Bill and the National Service Life Insurance. It was this early experience with selling life insurance that led him to his future occupation with Beneficial Life Insurance Company. Phil and Ruth returned home after the war, and he completed his education at BYU and received a degree in accounting in 1947. He joined Beneficial Life Insurance Company in 1946 and had a successful career in the insurance industry. He was the first Beneficial agent to achieve membership in the Million Dollar Roundtable and one of the first to achieve the Chartered Life Underwriter designation. He was Beneficial's General Agent in Provo, Utah, for many years. He also built Jedco Storage, one of the first storage unit facilities in Utah. In 1956, he was called as Stake President in the Alpine Stake of American Fork, Utah. He and his wife also served as LDS Mission Presidents to both the North Scottish Mission and the California Mission. Phil also served on the LDS Church General Welfare Committee, was a Regional Representative to the Twelve, 1st Counselor in the Provo Temple Presidency, a Branch President for the senior couple missionaries at the MTC, and a coordinator of the opening of the Mt. Timpanogos Temple. Phil is survived by his wife, Ruth, and 6 of his 7 children: Karla Jensen Gaines (John), Ann Jensen Barton (George) both deceased, Lorraine Jensen, Shirley Jensen Boswell (Jeff), Barbara Jensen Robinson (Sherm), Robert Hazen Jensen (JoAnne), and Dorothy Jensen Champion (Paul.) He and Ruth also have 27 grandchildren and 33 great grand children. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the A. F. 6th & 8th Ward Chapel, 300 North 100 East, American Fork, Utah. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the church and again 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will be at the American Fork City Cemetery. Online guest book at wingmortuary.com.

Dear Ruth and Family,
We are sorry to hear about the passing of Phil. He was an exceptional person. He accomplished much in his life, much like Christ he was very loving, accepting, and charitable with his time serving mankind!
It was such a pleasure to buy your home and property in Washington, Utah. It has made a cozy place for us to live out our days!
May you be comforted knowing others care so much! Take care Ruth, We love you! Marion & Berdene Dennison

Many years have passed since I was fortunate and blessed to have served with President and Sister Jensen in the North Scottish Mission. These many years have slipped away, but the impact the Jensen's have had upon my life has only enlarged. His sterling example of faith, commitment, and love will forever be appreciated. His grand advice of "living by principle and not expediency" is imprinted upon my memory. I will always treasure the morning when Cheryl and I were married in the Logan Temple, and President and Sister Jensen were in attendance. He is ever our dear friend, example and brother. We extend out love to Sister Jensen and the family.

Phil Jensen was serving as the President of the North Scottish Mission when I arrived there as very green missionary from Idaho in September 1964. He proved to be a very kind, loving, and helpful president while we each transitioned into being effective missionaries in the service that we were called to do. His model for the effective and systemaatic study of the scriptures, Church history, Scottish history, and the missionary discussions established a foundation that has served me my entire life. I have only continued to grow from this experience. I served in a couple of areas in Scotland with his son-in-law, George Barton, and continued that association at BYU and in the military service in Okinawa. I was saddened to learn of George's recent passing. I am a better person for having known and served with President Jensen. We have lost a giant from among us. We are comforted by the knowledge that this parting is only temporary. I send my best wishes to Sister Jensen and her family.

On behalf of the Tuttle family, we extend our condolences to Ruth and the children. Phil served faithfully and well as President A. Theodore Tuttle's counselor in the Provo Temple presidency. Marne Tuttle celebrated her 90th birthday in August, so does not think she dares brave the weather for the funeral service, but sends her love and fondest memories.
