Robert Archuleta Obituary

Robert M. Archuleta
1943 ~ 2012
Robert M. Archuleta, born January 15, 1943 to Robert J. and Lura Sharp Archuleta, passed away on October 2, 2012 after a brief bout with liver cancer. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his mother and six sisters who had consistently lavished his life with deep love. Raised in poverty and intolerable racism, he never stopped seeking academic excellence. He graduated from the U of U in 1969. Having been accepted to both medical and law school, he chose to attend law school. He graduated from the University of Utah Law School in 1974. He had the unique distinction of being the first Hispanic law graduate. He loved the law and being a member of the Utah State Bar. He was President of the Mexican-American Law Student Association and served as the Editor of the Law Review. He was a recipient of the Reginald Heber Smith Service Award, after which he worked at the EI Paso Legal Assistance Society. He became its Chief Administrative Attorney and had high success serving the poor. He was a founding father of the Utah Minority Bar Association, serving twice as its President. He was also an Ex-Officio Utah State Commissioner, overseeing all bar members. For one year he was an Administrative Law Judge. Without the strong example of his wonderful parents, he would have fallen along the way. Robert had a peerless mother who remained a living example and who set the bar high for each of her 7 children. Robert had a rich body of friends, from all walks of life, always feeling himself a fortunate individual. Many of his friendships started from 5 years old, while living in Sandy, graduating from Jordan High, and continuing his entire life. Robert, from childhood, always loved Almighty God. He was a man of worship and prayer. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in many capacities. He leaves this world happy and eager to see his Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ, and rejoin his family and his many sterling friends. Robert is survived by his mother and six sisters. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Midvale 10th Ward, 8825 South 150 West. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday evening at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street and 1 hour prior to the services, at the church. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens. www.goffmortuary.com

Wow. Robert, your name just came to my mind. I see you've passed and that you've gone home to your Savior. You'll recall that you were my first mentor in criminal defense when I was a second and third year law student at BYU. I've gone on to have a distinguished career, in no small part due to your efforts. I remember your leadership and teaching so much. I'm grateful to have studied under you, and I'm especially grateful you're in the presence of our heavenly father. -- MARK MCBRIDE, ESQ., Beverly Hills, California

Archie,

You enriched my life is so many ways. Your abundant sense of humor, descriptive phrases, love of life, quick wit and so much more will never be forgotten.

You were a true friend and a uniquely gifted person who made the world a better place.

I have many fond memories of you from our college days at the U, our Army days back in 1964 at Ft. Ord and our telephone conversations.

God bless you Archie, and your beloved family.

RIP I'll always remember the great conversations we had about life our follies, and everything about my relatives as you were growing up with Mike. You were really one of a kind from your Legal knowledge and practices to love of God and the way you displayed this to others publicly. Thanks for being a friend.

Oh Arches, I can't believe I read your obituary. You are still so much alive in my memories. Our comedy of errors on our trip to a Flying Zion party comes to mind. You were generous to a fault and quick witted. You made me laugh until I cried. You saw me through a difficult time and had Emily been a boy, she would have been named Robert after you and my dad. I remember your grandmother and of course your mom who is an incredibly strong and matter of fact woman. She pulls no punches. How she will miss you. Thanks for introducing me to the great late Steve Payton and thanks for you donating clothes for a now deceased attorney friend. You made me laugh Arches. You were a good friend of many years. I will miss you. Bless you and your dear mom. Ride on "celestial" cyclist.

You'll be missed at Don's. Thanks for the meetings over the many years; for believing in me and letting me give you a hand; for your considerable community work; and for helping so many, including my family. It was a small but significant case; ensuring child grandparent visitation rights. Our sincere condolences to your family and friends.
