Sylvia Miller Obituary

- Sylvia Janet Bishop Miller passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024, at the age of 88, after living a life of faith and abundance. Her family rejoices in the reunion of Sylvia with her eternal companion, L. Paul Miller, and gives thanks that their time apart was short.

Born on July 14, 1936, in Hinckley, Utah, Sylvia was the eighth of ten children born to Heber and Vera Bishop. Theirs was a home filled with love and friendship-Sylvia and Paul continued that legacy in their home and family.

While studying at Snow College, Sylvia met the love of her life and eternal companion, Lewis Paul Miller. They were married and sealed together in the Manti Temple on November 23, 1956. Paul passed away on December 19, 2023. Their 67 years together were a testament to faith, shared service, unwavering commitment, and deep devotion to each other and their family. We are grateful for their example of unconditional love, partnership, and joy in their family. Together, they raised five children: Larry, Debra, Michelle, Kirk, and Sherree.

Sylvia earned a degree in education from Brigham Young University and served as a teacher at J.A. Taylor Elementary. She found her greatest joy in the simple moments: hosting family barbecues on her patio, sharing her testimony, caring for her beautifully manicured yard, and cheering on her favorite sports teams, including her beloved BYU Cougars. She and Paul were committed to frequently gathering those they loved and their home was a place of peace, warmth, and love, where all felt welcome without judgment and laughter filled the air. Sylvia's Danish Sugar Pancakes are a cherished family tradition that her grandchildren carry on in her memory.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sylvia's life was defined by deep faith, keen study, and commitment to selfless service. Her faith was the foundation of her life, guiding her every decision and interaction with love. We continue to find comfort in her often-repeated advice, "it will all work out." She continually gave and served selflessly to those in need, especially her family. Her gifts of patience, kindness, and ability to teach were always on display as a loving mother and grandmother and in her church callings, including as a Relief Society instructor. She and Paul served missions in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the Centerville Deseret Industries, the Provo Missionary Training Center, and in the Bountiful Temple. Her gentle spirit, quiet strength, and grace touched the hearts of those who knew her.

Those who knew Sylvia will remember her for her elegance and poise, her love of beauty, and her impeccable style. She carried herself with grace always. Above all, her unwavering love for her family, her deep enduring faith, and her unshakable testimony of Jesus Christ will remain her lasting legacy.

Sylvia is now together again with her beloved husband, Paul; her parents, Heber and Vera; her nine siblings; and her grandson, Matthew Miller. She leaves behind a rich legacy in her children, Larry (Rhonda), Michelle Layton (Dean), Debbie Baird, Kirk (Michelle), and Sherree Schultz (Matt), as well as 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Sylvia's friends and neighbors, of 60+ years in Bountiful where she and Paul raised their family. Sylvia's final nine months after Paul's death were spent at Covington Senior Living in Farmington, Utah. She quickly fell in love with the staff, residents, and Branch Presidency who lovingly cared for and served her. Her family thanks Dr. Joshua Oaks at Oaks Medical Group and Atlas Homecare and Hospice for their compassionate care.
