FUNERAL HOME

Christopher Hamlin Obituary

Christopher David Hamlin

Des Moines

Christopher David Hamlin passed of apparent heart failure and went to be with the Lord on Friday June 15, 2012 at the age of 44. He was the most loving father to Jonathan and Justin Hamlin of North Liberty, son to Larry and Jody Hamlin of Urbandale, big brother and uncle to Robert and Megan Hamlin of Urbandale, and devoted boyfriend to Sarah (Townsend) Ward of Chicago. Christopher was also friend, colleague, and loved one to many, many more.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at McLaren's Chapel with private interment at Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McLaren's.

Born and raised in Urbandale, Christopher graduated from Urbandale High School in 1986 and went on to the University of Iowa, where he graduated in 1991. As far back as 3rd grade, Chris developed a fondness for German culture and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to study abroad in Germany and Austria in both High School and College. After graduating from the U of I, Christopher went to work for Wal Mart, during which he spent two years working for the company as Store Manager in Hanover, Germany. Christopher made friends with many during his time spent abroad and remained close to them over the years, speaking fluent German and communicating with them in German via social media.

Christopher had many other passions as well, including his love of sport. Over the past several years Christopher watched his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers win multiple Super Bowls, his beloved Boston Red Sox win the World Series, and his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide win the collegiate football National Championship. Roll Tide! Although Christopher was an Alabama football fan since his young days, he was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan first and foremost.

In the past few years, Christopher spent time working around his house, a place he was very proud to call home. He spent time painting, reconstructing, landscaping and ensuring his lawn was the thickest and greenest lawn in the neighborhood. Christopher looked forward to the weekends when he could spend an entire day smoking brisket out on his deck. He loved experimenting with new rubs and smoking techniques until he finally perfected the art. All that had the privilege of sharing his masterpiece loved his smoked brisket.

Christopher's greatest passion was his two sons, Jonathan and Justin. He was extremely proud of both of them and their accomplishments, as is their mother, Judi Koberg of North Liberty. Christopher loved traveling around Europe with his two young boys and teaching them about German culture. He also enjoyed playing catch with them, watching them play baseball games, golfing with them, attending their various activities, and being the best father to them. There was nothing more important to Christopher than his two sons; they were his number one priority in life.

Chris spent the past three years working with his brother Robert at W.W. Grainger, Inc. as an Account Manager. He was immediately successful in his role, having achieved his annual sales goals each year, and developed many friendships with both colleagues and customers. His work ethic was second to none and he was very proud of his professional accomplishments.

Christopher David Hamlin had a heart of (black and) gold. His kindness, generosity, selflessness, and passion for life will be especially missed by his family, but by all that knew him as a friend, colleague, and neighbor as well. Christopher's charm, sense of humor, and incredibly infectious smile made him the great man known and loved by all.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Iowa City West High School Choral Program (2801 Melrose, Iowa City, IA 52246) or the University of Iowa Army R.O.T.C. (112 South Quad, Iowa City, IA 52242.

We love you and miss you Christopher!

Chris was my best friends big brother when I first moved to Des Moines back the 80's. My greatest memories of him include his great athletic ability and his easy going personality. I remember playing street hockey, and riding BMX bikes with Chris, admiring his incredible train set and his 69 Camero. I loved to listen to his Styx album. To this day, I think of Chris when I hear a Styx song. Thank you Chris for all the rides to school when it was 20 below outside! You will be sorely missed my friend.

I have only known Chris for a very short time as we worked out during the same 6:15p gym class. No matter how torturous the workout, he managed to have a smile on his face and was an absolute warrior. There will be a void in the class as he will be greatly missed. Please know I will be praying for his family. May his memory be eternal and may his family find comfort in God's love. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4

Words can't express how deeply saddened I was to learn of Chris's sudden death. I would like to express my sincere sympathies to the entire Hamlin family. Chris was a team member who I met for the first time in Minnesota a few weeks after he started at Grainger. It didn't take long even at that first meeting for Chris to endear himself to everyone on the team and to prove that Bruce Krejci had hired another Hamlin star. All who knew him at Grainger regarded him with great respect and admiration because he was a hard worker, a team player and a genuinely good man. There will certainly be a void at Grainger and in this world without him.

Dear Hamlin Family & Sara,

May God wrap his arms around each of you and fill your hearts with His grace and wonderful memories of Chris. I pray that Chris' spirit may find the way to each of our hearts and make us a little more like him!

God Bless you!

He will truly be missed and was taken from us way too early. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this tragic time.

I was fortunate to be invited to the Grainger Show 2012 by Chris and very much enjoyed going. We had tons of fun and was able to hang out on a personal basis at times. Those times I will keep with me forever. We had numerous talks when he would come by my work about his boys and Sara. My heart bleeds for all of you in your time of sorrow. RIP my friend.

I first met Chris during a trip to the Dominican Republic a little over three years ago. Other than seeing an almost identical cone to brother Rob, I also found an outgoing and genuine person who was fun to be around.

Soon after the trip, Chris joined our sales team at Grainger and immediately I found a dedicated, hard-working person who wanted to be successful in his professional career and more available to his sons and loved ones in his personal life. When not talking business, Chris beammed with joy to talk about his sons. Chris achieved highest level of success in both parts of his life.

Chris will be truly missed by all those who knew him. We are blessed to have the chance to know him!

His contagious smile will surely be missed! Ive had the pleasure of working with Chris and Rob over the past few years and recently had great conversation over some spicy wings with Chris during a business trip in MN. We had fun talking about our kids, significant others and our lives outside of work. It's apparent, both professionaly and personally that Chris and Rob come from a wonderful family. My heart aches for you all and my thoughts and prayers are with your family. Chris will be missed!

This picture of Chris Ive included is from our annual business trip to Orlando. He was more willing than some others to put on the glasses:)

Chris was a quiet soul that went about his work with determination and commitment. He was an excellent example of someone who picked up his responsibilities and carried them along as he went about getting his work done.

I spent two days in a workshop with Chris and absolutely admired his Spirit and Attitude. His many friends at Grainger will miss him greatly.
