Edward Nahas Obituary

Edward F. Nahas

Waukee

Edward Franklin Nahas passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 26, 2011, while working out at the Riverside YMCA in Des Moines. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes—Dunn's Chapel concluding with a vigil service at 6 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, December 29 at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Ed was born January 8, 1945 to George and Susan Nahas. Born and raised in Des Moines, he attended All Saints Catholic School, graduated from Dowling High School in 1962, and received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Drake University.

Ed was an avid basketball player in his youth, playing for both the Dowling Maroons and Drake Bulldogs. As an adult, he dedicated much of his free time to coaching high school basketball at Dowling and Roosevelt. He enjoyed coaching and instilling a love of the game in others, but nothing gave him greater pride than watching his own children excel in athletics.

Ed worked for Polk County Juvenile Court for more than 30 years. He received many awards for his service to the community and the courts throughout his career. He also worked as a state-certified adoption investigator conducting home studies for more than 20 years. He was privileged to be part of the adoption experience with families across Iowa, assisting deserving couples with realizing their dreams of raising a child. Each year during the holidays, he continued to receive cards from many of the families he served. Those cards were a source of significant pride for him and always brought a smile to his face. Even in retirement, he continued his adoption work part-time because he found it to be so personally fulfilling.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife, family and friends, seeing his grandchildren, and regularly attending Iowa Cubs baseball games.

Ed is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maret; a son, James G., his wife, Carolyn L. and their children, Olivia L., George J., Joseph J. and James E.; a son, Ted, his wife, Heather and their children, Tommy and John; a daughter, Julie Muller, her husband, Rick and their children, Ellie, Katelyn and Nikole; two sisters, Cynthia and Sharon; a niece, Christina (Nabeel) Nimry; and a brother-in-law, Juri Kaseoru. He is preceded in death by his parents; and mother-in-law, Larissa Kaseoru.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riverside YMCA in Des Moines.

We are so sad to hear of Ed's passing. Ed helped us with the adoption of our daughter Maya in 2004/5. There are surely few greater gifts that one person can give another than to help bring a family a child. Ed's legacy is a truly awesome one. God bless and keep you all.

Maret, Jimmy, Ted & Juilie; So sorry to hear of your loss. I have many, many fond memories of Ed during our years of coaching basketball together at Dowling HS. We had many good times & I fondly remember our "committee meetings" after basketball games & practices at DHS. Ed was always a joy to be around. He had a huge soft spot in his heart for his players & always looked for the best in a person. Above all Ed was proud of & loved his family. Ed will be sorely missed by everyone who knew & loved him. Ed was truly "one of a kind!" My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Ed completed our home study for the adoption of our son 4 1/2 years ago. We have such fond memories of what a kind and gentle man he was. This being our first experience with adoption, we were nervous and uncertain about the process. Ed put our fears at ease and walked us through the process. He was always so positive and helpful during each of our visits. We are very sorry for your loss and will keep your family in our prayers. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories to hold in your heart as you walk through the days ahead. Jody & Ann Foutch

My thoughts and prayers are with Ed's family now in light of this sad news. Ed helped my wife and I bring our son home from Nigeria and will always be a part of our family's story. My family is praying for comfort for the Nahas family.

I first met Coach Nahas while at Dowling in 1985, my cousin, Mark Mauro and Uncle Don Mauro were also coaches, Mr Nahas was a "true pinacle" to teamwork, devotion, and spirit, he taught me alot of great ideals, and like my other coach, Mark, he was always wonderful to play for, never getting mad if we did'nt play good, instead, he gave all of us support and his wonderful smile, to lead us on to victory! Coach, you will be missed, and to the Nahas family, my heartfilled sympathy, and may almighty Lord Jesus shine perpetual light on you all and "Coach Ed" God Bless, Dave Serpento, Dowling class of '1988

My sincere condolence to the Nahas family. Ed is an amazing man. He helped us through our adoption of our son and was in the process of helping us again. He smiled ear to ear whenever he visited us telling us how happy he was for our family. He is going to be missed by many.
