Ilah (Kalkwarf) Long, 85, passed from this life on May 20, 2010, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home. Funeral Mass is Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone. Burial will be in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery, Ridgeport.
Ilah was born on November 27, 1924, in Dayton, the daughter of William and Beatrice (Selvog) Kalkwarf. She married Johnnie (Jack) Long on October 11, 1941, at Grant City, Missouri. In earlier years, the couple owned a restaurant in Elkhart, moving to Boone in 1962. Ilah, along with her husband, was administrator of the Boone County Care Facility for 17 years and she continued an additional year on her own until 1980. A park was recently dedicated to the Longs on the site where the Care Facility once stood. Ilah was then employed by Iowa State University as a cook for the student athletes and sororities until her retirement in 1994.
Ilah was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and son, Richard. She is survived by two daughters Claudia (Gary) Klonglan of Boone and Beatrice (Kim) Rinehart of Tucson, AZ; a son John (Duanna) Long of Richmond Hill, GA; 7 grandchildren: Tina (Arnulfo) Salgado of Glendale, AZ, John E. (Josie) Long III of Rush City, MN, Stacey (Ryan) Anderson of Grimes, Shila (Tony) Cantele of Richmond Hill, GA; Courtney (Andrew) Wehage of Loveland, CO; Erin (David) Sullivan of Tucson, AZ, and Jeremy Rinehart, serving with the U.S. Air Force in South Korea; and 13 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday at the funeral chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used for improvements to the Long Memorial Park.
