Steve Leighter Obituary

Steve Leighter

Steve passed away on April 12 at the age of 70. He graduated from Des Moines North High School. Steve was a multi sport athlete and avid sports fan.

Steve served honorably as a Senior Police Officer with the Des Moines Police Department for 31 years.

Steve had a great sense of humor, and could tell stories that would bring laughter to everyone.

Steve is survived by his wife Deborah Leighter, son Chris and family, brother Neil (Rhonda) Leighter, nephew Scott Leighter, nieces Sherri ODonnell, and Lisa Allard Carnes.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents Neil Sr. and Josephine, sister JoAnn Wooldridge, nephews Jeff Allard, and Jamie Allard.

I had the pleasure of working with Steve while we were both assigned to the Third Watch. Steve would always keep you in stitches with his stories and he always had your back on every trip. My condolences to Steve's family.

I didn't know Steve well at North but remember him being a good guy. Like several others guys I knew at North he joined the DMPD. Sorry to hear of his passing. My sympathies to his family.

I remember one time waiting for Steve to get done with his paper route so we could go up north to see relatives, I was prob 6 he was about 11.
When patrolling the SS he would stop by and see my mom and dad, they always enjoyed that.
RIP Cuz. Gone too soon.

Followed me to DMPD. He accomplished many things in his
Life's journey; semi pro hockey
Player, great softball player, and
Honorable 30 year career at DMPD.
My brother was a good guy. Always
a great story teller and with a great
sense of humor. I will miss him as
well as all that knew him.

The Leighter Family, steve worked close to each other territories and we had the opportunity to sit and talk many times. I remember one time four of meet for lunch at Tops steak house and I was sitting next to steve and I looked down at his plate and there was a tooth stuck in his steak I said steve there's tooth in your steak he looked picked it out and put it back where it belong and he said it'sand old hockey thing, we all laugh uncontrolably. steve was fun to be around on patrol many many laugh's. Rest in peace my friend, my god bless you. Bob Harter DMPD 1969 to 2000.
