Steven Lunning Obituary

Steven Lunning

Ames

Steven Edward Lunning, 61, of Ames, Iowa passed away on Friday morning, March 16, at the Israel Family Hospice House. His wife Cindy, dog, Sable, and niece, Holly were with him as he peacefully left this earthly world.

Steven was born January 4, 1951 in Mason City, Iowa to Elwin I. Lunning and Delores K. (Trotman) Lunning. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1969, NIACC in Mason City in 1971, and University of Northern Iowa in 1975.

On August 30, 1975 he married Cynthia A. Maier of Eagle Grove, Iowa. They met while attending the University of Northern Iowa. They lived in Cedar Falls, Nevada, and Ames. Steve worked for Collegiate Pacific, the City of Ames, and Mary Greeley Medical Center all in Ames.

Steve was the Payroll Coordinator at MGMC for almost 25 years. He retired in January 2011. He was on the Board of Directors for the Ace Community Credit Union for over 20 years. Steve enjoyed his work at MGMC and on the Board at Ace Credit Union and the people he met and worked with there. He was a member of the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Payroll Association.

He liked being outdoors, playing golf, watching sports on his big screen TV, especially the Hawkeyes, cooking (especially desserts), and spending time with his dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his best friend for the past two years, his dog, Sable. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Dennis) Oian of LaPorte TX, and their children, Eric (Shelia) Oian, Kurt Oian and Erin Oian, all of TX. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Wanda Maier of Ames; sister-in-law, Cathy (Al) Van Kley of Ankeny; sister-in-law, Chris (Kevin) Brooks of Slater; his brother-in-law, Tom (Rhonda) Maier of Nevada; and niece and nephews, Holly Brooks, Ryan Brooks, Mitch (Emily) Van Kley, Tate Maier and Nate Maier.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Elwin and Delores Lunning of Mason City; his brother, Mark Lunning of Mason City; his father-in-law, Richard Maier of Ames; many aunts and uncles on both sides of the family; and by Steve and Cindy's animal shelter dogs, Dumpling and Taffy.

Per his wishes, Steve will be cremated with his ashes to be scattered at a later date. A Celebration of His Life is planned for family and friends at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 - 28th Street, Ames on Saturday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m. Those attending this celebration will be asked to share their favorite stories about Steve.

Memorial funds may be directed to his wife Cindy for donations in Steve's name to MGMC, the Israel Hospice House, and the Ames Animal Shelter.
