Elbert R. Wilkinson, 83, a retired minister/pastor, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at a local hospital.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethesda Community Church, 4700 N. Beach St., Fort Worth. The service will be led by the Rev. Morris Ivey, the Rev. Bill Fitch, the Rev. Harvey Junker and the Rev. Vic Schobert, superintendent of the North Texas Council of the Assemblies of God. Bearers of his casket will be his nephews and grand-son-in-law. Honorary bearers will be former deacons with whom the Rev. Wilkinson has served. Reserved seating for these deacons and their spouses will be available at the church. Burial: Following committal services, Elbert will be laid to rest in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: The Rev. Wilkinson will lie in state noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m., at Lucas Sylvania Funeral Home.

Elbert R. Wilkinson was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Dallas to John Franklin and Minnie Lee Ferguson Wilkinson. Elbert entered full time Christian ministry at the age of 17. As a young pastor serving in Gainesville, he was appointed voluntary chaplain at Camp Howze during World War II. This was one of the ministries of which he was most proud, and developed relationships that lasted a lifetime. He came to Fort Worth in 1944 to be assistant pastor of Rosen Heights Assembly of God Church. Later in 1944 he came to the Riverside area to pastor Riverside Assembly of God Church. In 1950, the church relocated and built on Maurice and Eagle Drive. In 1969, the church relocated again, to I-820 and Highway 121. At this time the church was named Christian Temple. The Rev. Wilkinson retired as pastor of that church in 1986 after having served the same congregation more than 42 years. The Rev. Wilkinson served his denomination in several capacities, including being presbyter of the North Fort Worth Section of the Assemblies of God. This was the largest section of the largest district in the General Council of the Assemblies of God. He served nine years on the board of directors of Evangel University in Springfield, Mo. Elbert was active in the civic and political areas in the communities in which he served. He was a leader in the Assembly of God in searching out locations for church campgrounds. He led in the selection of the property in Hurst where the North Texas Assembly of God offices are housed. He was very active for many years in the Riverside Lions Club. He was a friend of many well-known political leaders and was active in community politics. He was invited to Austin by Gov. Price Daniels and others for special functions. Elbert was invited to a national prayer breakfast in Washington, D.C. and an international prayer conference in Cambridge, England. In retirement he became involved in RV clubs and was called on regularly to handle Sunday worship services. Many of these people looked on him as their pastor. The Rev. Wilkinson was an ordained Assembly of God minister for 62 years.

A year has passed and I miss Uncle Elbert a lot. He was the patriarch of the family for so long and always had advice and wisdom to pass on to us.

I know in heaven he is singing and praising the Lord.

Though recent years have not allowed me to spend time with Bro. Wilkinson. He was still someone I proudly called friend. A great encouragement to me, with his ready smile and great laugh. God bless you all as you recall the wonderful moments of his life here.

To Sister Wilkinson, Fred & Shirley, and family:

I can't tell you how much all of you have meant in my life. My fondest memories of childhood are those from Riverside Assembly of God.

Bro. Wilkinson paid attention to everyone and incorporated children's church and activities to keep us engaged and learning about our Lord. This is where I learned to sing, and still sing today.

Sis. Wilkinson, you are an awesome woman of God and a living example of a Godly wife. Thank you for your faithfulness in always remembering people. My parents were always so touched when they would get your cards. It meant so much to them.

At my Dad's Memorial Service last year, I remember talking to Bro. Wilkinson about grave markers for my parents. He relayed the quote on his: "Cares all past. Home at last" - and what a homecoming.

God Bless each of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love, Rebecca

Sister Wilkinson and Family, So sorry to learn of Bro. Wilkinson,s "going home". I did not know about it until after his services, and hate so bad that I missed his celebration. My memories go back so many, many years, all the way back to Riverside Assembly church. We use to come with Granny Tish Baker and Grandpa Baker. I am Teresa Marsh's daughter if you can't place me. They were special times when we came to church there. We were always made to feel welcome. Bro.Wilkinson was truly a man of God. My prayers are with you,Martha Jo

It was so good being with you at the Celebration of Uncle Elbert's Homegoing. He truly will be missed. Only eternity will tell of the many many souls that met the Master through his ministry. Many family members were awaiting the completion of his life's journey. His reunion with family and other saints is too glorious to comprehend. He cannot come to us but we can go to him. Praise God for the assurance He gives us.

You are loved,

What an absolute honor to know Bro. Wilkinson and his family. There is no other man who has lead his sheep as well as Bro. Wilkinson. I was very fortunate to have gotten to experience the family side of him and his family. I know his passing is a sad time on earth but what a celebration they are having in heaven. I can see all the angels wearing cowboy boots, driving jeeps, and telling jokes. What a party! We will all miss him. I love you Sister Wilkinson and the whole family.

Dear Wilkinson Family,

I remember Brother Wilkinson as a minister that seemed larger than life. My family attended the Riverside church when I was very small, yet the memories were profound. Memories of graciousness and hospitality, love and acceptance.

I saw Bro. Wilkinson in recent years, and he still retained that smile and gracious regard for others.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

My heart is heavy at the passing of this great man of God. Bro. Wilkinson was the only pastor I ever had until I grew up and married a pastor. He was everything a pastor should be. My husband and I have looked to him and Sis. Wilkinson as role models of a pastor and pastor's wife. I have so many wonderful memories of my childhood and adolescent years growing up at Christian Temple. These memories have lasted me a lifetime. Bro. Wilkinson will live on in my heart and memories. There will never be another one like him. I love you Bro. Wilkinson.

MRS RIGGS: I WAS ONE OF YOUR STUDENTS AT PASCHAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING IN 1967. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES OF MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS.

I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THE REASON THAT YOU PLAYED SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART IN MY LIFE THEN AND IN MY THOUGHTS EVEN NOW IS THE LOVING EXAMPLE YOU PORTRAYED. I CAME FROM SUCH A LOVING FAMILY AND KNEW THAT YOU DID AS WELL SIMPLY BY THE WAY YOU ACTED IN CLASS.

EVEN THEN, I KNEW THAT JUST BECAUSE A PERSON IS EDUCATED DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE A PERSON OF SUBSTANCE AND DESERVING OF RESPECT. YOU ON THE OTHER HAND, DERSERVED THAT AND MUCH MORE. THIS, I AM CERTAIN WAS DUE TO YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER AND THE LOVE AND GUIDANCE THEY GAVE TO YOU AS I AM SURE YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND HAVE SO LOVINGLY PASSED ON TO YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN.

HAVING LOST MY FATHER ALMOST 6 YEARS AGO, I KNOW THE LOSS WELL. MY LOVING THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU, YOUR MOTHER AND LOVING FAMILY MEMBERS.

I KNOW THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF HIM AND THAT HE WILL FOREVER LIVE IN YOUR HEART.

WITH SINCERE SYMPATHY,

Dear Sister Wilkinson, Shirley, Fred, Brian, Jennifer,

Yvonne, Eddie and family

How our hearts grieve with you as you mourn the death of Pastor Wilkinson. He was such a loving and caring man and lived each day as our Lord would want him to. So many people were touched by his Godly life. Don't you know there was quite the celebration when he entered the gates of Heaven. I can picture him saying "WOW Heaven is more GRAND and GLORIOUS than I ever dreamed it could be." He's probably already lining up people to wave the Palm Branches on Palm Sunday in heaven. That was a tradition he started that has never been matched. He also made all the Holidays so special in our services. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

What a friend! We Loved Him and Love you!

Words really cannot express the love and gratitude I have for Bro. Wilkinson (and also Sis. Wilkinson). Both have made such an impact on my life and I appreciate the teaching of Bro. Wilkinson. I also appreciate the fact that he lived what he preached and was an excellent example of being a "man of God." Bro. Wilkinson, please say "hi" to Sugar for me.

What can I say about my Pastor. He introduced me to the Lord and helped to guide me in the ways of God. I am so thankful for his leadership as are so many others that he shepharded. I pray that the Holy Spirit will comfort the family in this time and be ever so gentle to remind us that we were not made for this world but for heaven and that we will look forward to rejoicing with Bro. Wilkinson again someday. May God Bless you.

Sister Wilkinson, Both Brother Wilkinson and you, as well as the church ministered to us at a time of special need. Brother Wilkinson brought sermons which were exactly what was needed at the time, which made me realize that he was listening when the Lord gave him just what was needed. I'm so hankful he conveyed the message the Lord gave him.

Our prayers and love will be with you during this time.
