Elisa Werner Obituary

Elisa Ellen Werner, 51, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, after bravely battling a stroke and cancer. Celebration of life: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, 1600 Gendy St., Fort Worth, 76107. Memorials: May be made to Operation Respect, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, to support the live animals, and the Omni Theater, both of which teach kids young and old to respect and care for Earth's amazing creatures; or to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Elisa was born Feb. 8, 1964, in Fort Worth and lived in southwest Fort Worth for much of her life. She graduated from Southwest High School and attended Tarrant County Junior College. She had previously worked at Edelweiss and Casa Manana, then joined the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, starting out in its live animal room. She remained a loyal employee there for 21 years, working in security, the ticket office and, most recently, systems administration/webmaster. Elisa was usually the first person in the office and could always be entrusted to put the museum's best face forward. She created a social media phenomenon by giving voice to the museum's celebrated snapping turtle, Bob T. Turtle, befriending hundreds of humans, dogs, turtles and animals around the world. She was active with Sokol Fort Worth throughout her life and made lifelong friends in the process. A gymnast in her younger years, she later coached at Sokol and Lone Star Gymnastics. Elisa was a staunch baseball and Rangers fan - even in the lean years - and could often be heard yelling "Play Ball!" at the end of the National Anthem, no matter what the occasion. She enjoyed road trips, camping, cooking, attending baseball games, the Kerrville Folk Festival, canasta with her Sokol family, poker with the Omni guys, cheering on her niece and nephew's accomplishments, sharing drinks with friends at the Bull & Bush, Sundays with the Masseys, and a good game of Scrabble. Often described as "freakishly strong" and tough as nails on the outside, behind that steel demeanor was a kind and soft-hearted soul who was always there when you needed her. She was truly a force of nature whose absence will be felt. Elisa was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Maureen Werner; and grandmother, Hanna Werner. We know Elisa would want to thank her sister Hanna, "Team Elisa," and everyone who showed her nothing but love over the past few months. Special thanks to Dena Whitehurst, Mary Alice Ward, Suzanne Townsend and Carol Murray for their loyal support. Survivors: Sister, Hanna Werner Castillo; brother, Carl Werner; nephew, Domingo Castillo; niece, Maria Castillo; many close friends who considered her part of their own families; and her cat, Jean Louise.

Elisa and I became friends in the 6th grade thanks to Girl Scouts, and remained friends throughout our years at Southwest. She was with me during my struggle with breast cancer in 2000, but as it happpens in life, our lives carried us apart after that, but EEW was never out of my thoughts and my heart. I will NEVER look at penguins without thinking fondly of my friend Elisa, who adopted the entire species when we were still in Girl Scouts!

It was wonderful seeing all of the people who attended your Celebration of Life and felt like a reunion of past and present museum employees who were all there to show how much you meant to them. I loved seeing the pictures and hearing the stories of the people whose lives you touched. You will be dearly missed.

Elisa, I had the honor of meeting you via your alter ego, Bob T. Turtle. You brought us into your world, and truly became a beloved member of our global Corgi Nation Family. I'm so sorry to hear about Elisa. I had the pleasure of working with her on occasion through a partnership with the museum. She was always the most helpful person when we had technical issues and I knew if I called Elisa I was going to get results. I will miss her greatly. My thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.

Elisa was an amazing but forthright person. She did her jobs well and with professionalism. She enjoyed her life. She suffered with courage. Personally still in shock at her passing, I will always admire her. Thanks, Elisa, for your support and encouragement to me. May you rest in peace and may God comfort your loved ones.

Elisa,
I am so sorry to hear of your passing. Our paths crossed many times over the last 30+ years, from high school, to Celebrations, and more recently, the last 20+ years seeing you at the FWMSH when I was in town. Mom (Carol Stanford) would always tell me you said hello. May peace and comfort be with your family and all that knew and loved you.

I remember lots of good times with Elisa when I was her Girl Scout leader. We had lots of campouts & hikes at the GS camps, and projects like painting the neighborhood fireplugs with patriotic colors to honor the bi-centennial year. I would see her often when I visited the museum, and she always had a smile and a hug. Had no idea she had been ill, but I'm glad she's now in no pain and in the Father's arms!

To my Soul sister, friend and Aunt to Kirby. We will miss you so much. Your words of encouragement and the banter back and forth between the "fur/shell" kids. Kirby tips a black and tan in your honor (he used the turtle b/t maker you brought him). We will miss sharing things and adventures. Fly free of pain and know we will always think of you in joy and delight. Turtle on
