Elizabeth Rankin Obituary

Elizabeth Jean Morris Rankin, 84, a homemaker, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at a local hospital.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at University United Methodist Church. Burial: Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brown, Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.

Memorials: The family requests memorials be made to University United Methodist Church-Gayle and Mary Beth Scott Scholarship Fund, TCU.

Jean was born in Tulsa, Okla. and settled in Fort Worth in 1926. She graduated from former Central High School, now R.L. Paschal, in 1938 and TCU in 1942.

Jean met Sgt. Harry Rankin at a Paul Jones dance at the YMCA Dec. 6, 1941. They were engaged on Valentine's Day and married May 31, 1942. In the 51 years they were married they raised a family with lots of love.

As an active, lifelong member of UUMC, Jean served by teaching Sunday school classes, cooking youth dinners, acting as a delegate to the annual conference for many years and holding various offices in the WSCS and UMW.

Civically, Jean worked and served in many capacities. She held membership and offices in several organizations, including president in the Westcliff Elementary and Wedgwood Junior High PTAs, past president of TCU Women Exes (Thursday Group) and past president of the Southside Lady Lions. Jean also actively supported Harry in Lions International through his various local and state offices.

The accomplishment, which she valued most, was her family: Harry, three children, grandchildren, sister, niece and their friends and families were her proudest possessions and lasting monuments to a loving mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1993; her parents, Earl S. and Ethel Edna Jamison Morris; and sister, Mary Morris Church.

Survivors: Son, David E. Rankin and wife, Kaye of Fort Worth; daughters, Linda Rankin of Fort Worth and Jana Zimmer and husband, Gary of Rancho Viejo; brother-in-law, Dean of Vega; niece, Ellen M. Church of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Jylian Zimmer-Conway and husband, Derek of Rancho Viejo, Vanessa Zimmer of Rancho Viejo and Rees Rankin and wife, Margarita of Pittsburgh, Pa.
