Jimmy Riscky Obituary

Jimmy Edward Riscky FORT WORTH -- Jim Riscky was born on March 28, 1942, in Fort Worth, Texas and passed from this life on Feb. 9, 2020, with his wife, Norma, by his side. FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Saturday at Legacy Baptist Church. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, make donations to Punching Out Parkinsons @ 6613 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76116, 817-731-4665. Jim was the son of Pete and June Riscky and the grandson of Joe and Mary Riscky, who founded the original Riscky's Grocery and Market in 1927. Jim started working in the family business in 1954, working alongside his father and grandfather as a "Bottle Boy". He moved the empty soft drink bottles that customers returned to the store in cases in the back so the soft drink company could reuse them. Jim often joked "it was our version of recycling". Jim grew up in the supermarket learning to do all the tasks necessary to keep it successful, eventually becoming a butcher as his father and grandfather had been. In the late 1970's, Jim built the first wood fired steel pit, the same pits used to serve all of Riscky's barbeque today. Jim became a self described "workaholic", working at the grocery and barbeque business Monday through Saturday and cutting wood to sell on Sundays. In 1982, Jim married the love of his life, Norma. Soon after, they started the transfomation of Pete Riscky's Grocery into the Riscky's barbeque restaurant as it exists today. Riscky Barbeque is today a Texas legend! Still family operated, with a 92 year history and over 400 employees. Jim played a key role in development of both Sundance Square location and the Fort Worth Stockyards location. He opened restaurants in both these locations early in the development and they are still operating today. The Riscky's Sundance Square is the oldest continuous restaurant in the area. The Riscky's Steakhouse location is the oldest restaurant in Fort Worth, something which made Jim very proud. Although Jim was usually thinking of business, he loved to fish and be on the water. He could often be found trying to outsmart the fish in the waters of Port Aransas or below his beloved home on Eagle Mountain Lake. He was a Scottish Rite Mason. SURVIVORS: Wife, Norma Riscky; children, Jay Riscky and Deirdre, Allison Jones and Casey, Joe Riscky and Kourtney, Stacy Sullivan and Eddie; grandchildren, Pete Riscky, Maddie Riscky, Garett Jones, Grace Jones, Hayden Riscky, Hudson Riscky, Natalie Reed, Stacy R. Sullivan, Gabrielle Sullivan; and sister, Patty and spouse, Butch Harrington.

Jim Riscky was so good to my son, Greg Ferrier, when he was employed at Riscky's. Greg, passed in 1999, but he was employed at Riscky's until his lung cancer. He loved his time as an employee at Riscky's and the many friends made there.

I'm 73 y/o, I don't remember Jimmy as a child working at the store on Azle Ave. But I do remember his dad, granddad and Uncle Alex. I do remember him later on in life, when I rented a house from him, on the corner of Hanna and 27th. It was a green colored house, it still might be. I guess one of my favorite memories, was one early evening, Jimmy came knocking on our door.He had a pan of chopped brisket, was afraid some wood chips from spoon or whatever he'd use to push the brisket thru the chopper, had got into the meat. He didn't want to take a chance on serving it to the public, and didn't want to throw it away either, so he gave it to us, was told to be carefull of possible wood chips. We never found any wood chips.

I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I had the opportunity of talking with him at the reunion and love his restaurants. My son has also been to the restaurants and tells me every time he goes.
We will miss Jim and wish only the best to his family.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I did some plumbing work for jimmy. He would nearly always have it fixed by the time I would get there. I always loved to hear his stories he would tell me about his work and fishing trips. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

Dear Norma and family,
As you know, the Riscky's and Cleon and Pauline Gorbett family were next door neighbors on Smilax Circle in Oakhurst. Jimmy and I started in 5th grade at Oakhurst together.
Around age 50, each March 28th, I would remind him, he was "a month older than I am!"
Jimmy was always a special character at our Amon Carter Riverside High School reunions and generously provided the party room at Riscky's Bar BQ for us to all gather and tell tales!
Our families loved each other and shared happy and tragic memories. Pete, June, Judy, Jimmy and Patty were a perfect family to grow up with in the 50's.
Jimmy will be missed by many friends and may God bless you and comfort your family in the months to come.
In sympathy,
Paula (Gorbett) & Joe White

I worked for Mr. Risky for several years early in my adulthood at both the downtown location and I was a part of the opening in Stockyards Station. He was always very kind to me and always treated me like I mattered, he will be missed by many. Prayers of peace for his family.

The Riscky and Moates families have been friends for decades. I remember going to the original Riscky's on Azle Ave. with my Dad when I was a kid. Jimmy's Dad, Pete, would slice the BBQ for us. Jimmy was a good guy. Will miss him.
