Jimmy Sullivan Obituary

Jimmy Dwayne Sullivan, 64, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at a Dallas hospital after a lengthy illness.

Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Morris officiating. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

Memorials: May be made to the American Cancer Lymphoma Society.

Pallbearers: Tommy Tucker, Ray Dunaway, Marvin Balch, Kent Worley, Melvie Renfro and Bo Whatley.

Jimmy Dwayne Sullivan was born May 11, 1943, in Fort Worth. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. J.D. greeted everyone he met with a genuine smile and a hardy handshake. He opened his heart and home to many friends and was never too busy to lend a hand when called upon to make repairs or keep a watchful eye out for a wayward camel. Throughout his life, he shared his experiences, friendship and guidance to anyone in need.

J.D. graduated from Castleberry High School in 1961 and worked a number of odd jobs until choosing a career as a police officer with the Fort Worth Police Department in 1969. He eventually was promoted to the rank of sergeant before retiring in 1996 after 29 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Fort Worth. During his law enforcement career, J.D. took a real interest in training opportunities, whether instructing the new rookies on the street or trying to teach the veterans a new driving technique during in-service. He enjoyed fellowship, fishing and spending time with his family, especially those grandkids.

J.D. was a member and past master of the River Oaks Masonic Lodge, and served as executive secretary for the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Nona Faye Sullivan.

Survivors: Wife, Paula; sons, Dean Sullivan and his wife, Janice, of Cleburne and Roger Sullivan and his wife, Jeanne, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Misty, Ellaina, Joshua, Corbin and Clayton; great-grandson, Logan; brother, Charles Sullivan of Pelican Bay; sister, Rodera Perkins and her husband, Fred, of Cottondale; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dwayne was a very special man. He had a very gentle spirit. Whenever I was around him, he gave me a sense of calmness and peacefulness. He was always willing to lend a hand. I remember once when I was single & he & Paula helped me get a house ready to move into. It was a very old house that needed lots of work. Oh my gosh, how he & Paula worked hard scraping windows and re-grouting around them! He was willing to do anything for anyone! He was a man of honor & treated everyone with respect. What a wonderful example he gave all of us. I pray that we will honor him by remembering and adopting some of his awesome qualities in our own day to day lives.

With love and heartfelt sympathy to Paula, Roger, Dean & his entire family.

I saw Dwayne only once we graduated. It was at a meeting for CHS 20 Year reunion. I was struck by the face that he was still the nice person he was in high school. We had a long talk, and brought each other up on our lives since graduation. He was sweet to me as a teenager and sweet to me at the reunion. I was saddened to hear of his passing. My sympathy goes out to the family.

Dwayne was a friend to all he dealt with and a friend to those in need. I recall many time we spoke to each other and how every time we ended up taling for hours. When I was down, Dwayne picked me up. When I had a questions, Dwayne had a reply. When I called or e-maile dto check on him and his condition, he always had a kind word and never seemed to me to be thinking of the negitive. Where most would be upset or say "Why me lord" Dwayne never showed that to me, he was always smaile and how are you kind of guy. I will miss those long talks and long e-mails, but I will always have the memory of theme. If I could have half the smile and attitude Dwayne had, I would be miles ahead of the game. My heart goes out the Sullivan family, Paula,Dean,Roger,Charles,Rodera and grandchildern as well as the other family members and friends who will miss Dwayne. Your are top notch in my book Dwayne, My the Lord God Bless your family.

With all do respects,

JD in as little as I got to know him, was a :true Gael", having all the finest Irish of qualities in excess. First met JD and Paula at LEVA Conference Dallas 1996. Honoured to have them as guests in our home in May 1997. A quiet and thoughtful person, kind and "Cairdiul". I am the better for knowing him and can only imagine the deep sense of loss Paula and family are feeling. In the words of the Irish Proverb "Ar scath a cheile a mhairimid", we all exist in each others shadow, JD cast a long one that encompassed many and touched the lives of all. Ar dheis De go raibh a n-anam dilis, JD watch over Paula and all who loved you, Dermot & Neasa O'Donnell, Co. Kildare, Rep. of Ireland.

My deepest sympathies to Paula and family. I met Dwayne only one time at his sister-in-law's place of business. We chatted for a while about his recent surgery, his hopes and concerns. He struck me as a man who faced his illness with great courage and humor. I know he will be missed immensely by every person whose life he touched.
