John Eddy Obituary

John Sackett Eddy of Fort Worth, Texas passed away at his residence at the Stayton at Museum Way on December 31, 2025.

A celebration of life will be scheduled at The Stayton at Museum Way, his home for the past three years. A memorial service and burial will be scheduled at his former church in Short Hills, New Jersey at some point in the future.

John was born to the late Earnest A. Eddy and Annie K. Eddy on February 7, 1933 in St Louis, Missouri. He was a graduate of St Louis Country Day School and Washington University in St Louis. After graduation from college, John served in the United States Army before moving to New York City for a career as an Investment Banker at Schroder Investment Management and Bessemer Trust Company. John lived for many years in Short Hills, New Jersey where he was active in his church community. Prior to moving to Fort Worth, John lived at Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, New Jersey, and served as a member of the Finance Committee.

John enjoyed travelling, especially to France, eating gourmet food, especially French cuisine and drinking fine wine, especially from France. He was known to be a good cook; crepe suzettes were one of his specialties, and his grandchildren fondly remember his homemade peppermint ice cream. He loved museums and musicals and could often be found at the theater in New York, London, or near his home in New Jersey. He was also a trained magician, often performing for his children's friends and his grandchildren. His grandchildren still wonder how he made milk disappear in a newspaper.

John studied history and was an avid reader. His daily routine included reading the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. His family and friends knew consequences would be severe if these daily habits were interrupted. After his morning run, John could be seen in a blue blazer, blue Oxford button down shirt and khaki trousers reading the paper in his house, the lobby of the Stayton or even on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. He was the life of the party, sharing his experiences from his travels, recent reading or just life in general over a gin martini or a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Many remember his infectious laugh and humor - you always knew he was close by.

He is survived by his three granddaughters, Kristin Gower (Blake) of Fort Worth, Texas, Ashlyn Lafferty of Dallas, Texas, Megan Lafferty of New York, New York, two great granddaughters, Lawrence and Ellis Gower of Fort Worth, Texas and his son-in-law, Wayne Lafferty of McKinney, Texas. Ellen Stover Eddy, his wife, Hilary Eddy Lafferty, his daughter and John Kennard Eddy, his son predeceased him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's memory to the John Kennard Eddy Memorial Scholarship at Ohio Wesleyan University, University Advancement Office - 61 S. Sandusky Street; Delaware, Ohio 43015 (owu.edu/give).
