Funeral: 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of J.B. Earthman-Tanglewood Funeral Directors, 5740 San Felipe at Bering Drive, Houston, with the Rev. M. Eugene Vickrey officiating. Private burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Decatur.
Mr. Mathers was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Rosser. He had been a member of Fort Worth Masonic Lodge No. 148 for more than 50 years. His greatest joy was his three boys who were raised at Masonic Home and School of Texas. He took tremendous pride in knowing that each graduated from college and each became a Master Mason and a Shriner.
Marshall loved living in Houston during the last years of his life and being near the family from which he had been away for so long. He took special pride and joy in being near his grandchildren and great-grandchildren during recent years.
He also rediscovered his love of traveling through several vacation trips with his family by going to Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Canada.
He enjoyed his friends at the Memorial Terrace Apartments in Houston, especially playing poker with the guys and "42" with the ladies.
Marshall treasured his many years of friendship with Bill Moore of Arlington.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Werdna Nell Mathers, mother of their three children. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Blaine Mathers.
Survivors: Sons, Dale Mathers of Houston and Phil Mathers and his wife, Cecile, of Houston; grandchildren, Rodney Mathers and his wife, Rose, Kevin Mathers and his wife, Bekki, and Christopher Mathers; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Mathers and Brittney Mathers of Cotulla, Riley "Rooster" DiMeo of Sugar Land and Crystal, Jessica and Cesar Gonzalez of Katy; and sister, Winona Mathers Herring of Greenbrae, Calif.

Dad was very proud of his three boys.
They all 3 graduated from Masonic Home, all 3 served in the USA Military, all 3 graduated from college (one got a Master’s Degree), 2 became Certified Public Accountants, all 3 became Master Masons, later ... all 3 became Shriners. Dad was proud!

Today is Dec 10 - Dad was born on Dec 10. During the last few years of Dad's life he lived in Houston - it was amazing and wonderful to be so near Dad for those last few years. Dec 9 is Cecile's birthday .... Dec 10 is Dad's. On the evening of Dec 9 when Dad lived in Houston we would always celebrate both birthdays. That was a great celebration which we had dreamed of for so many years but had not gotten the opportunity to do until his move to Houston. It was great. Blaine would have loved the fact that Dad moved to Houston.

We had some great times with Dad during the last few years of his life. We saw the beautiful mountains of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. We saw deer, elk and other wildlife on those trips. We visited Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park in Montana (thanks to Will Long in Missoula, Mt.), Grande Coulee Dam in Washington and the beautiful city of Couer d'Alene Idaho. I enjoyed taking Dad to several football games (mainly the Dallas Cowboys) and a few Texas high-school football playoff games in the Astrodome in Houston. I also took Dad to a Houston Asros baseball game in the then 'Enron Field' in it's first year of operation (a disaster of a baseball game where we got beat 15 to 5), also took him to a Houston Aeros American League Hocky game on Dad's birthday (Dec 10, 2000 after he moved to Houston the previous August). That hockey game was a total thriller - it went to overtime and the Aeros won in a 'shootout'. During that game we had a visit from the Aero's mascot (Chilli) who hugged Dad on his birthday and sang 'Happy Birthday' to him. Also, during those several years I actually played a little golf with Dad. We drank a lot of coffee - Dad's favorite pastime I think. Back in mid-2000, Dad ask me to go to Fort Worth and help him with his move to Houston. I spent a week up there and that was a very busy week. Some nights we were up till mid-night with that move. Dad grew to love living in Houston.

Archie - Thanks for the very nice words about my Dad. I do remember his Chevy in the 50's! I also remember the roommate arrangement - the 'crackerbox' in the NW corner on the 2nd floor. My fondest memory of that arrangement was the gallon of peanut butter that you dropped in the middle of the night on that concrete floor - it made the whole building shake. I think Mr. Bodiford looked for that gallon of peanut butter for years! Thanks again for the nice words about my Dad.

In Memory of
Marshall Mathers
Such a flood of good memories comes to my mind after these nearly 50 years. This great man was the father of two of my lifelong buddies. One was my first roommate, Phillip Mathers, and the otherwas a high school classmate, Dale Mathers. Mr. Mathers owned a brand new '57' 4-door Chevrolet that was the coolest of the cool vehicles for my generation. All the good ideals we were taught at the Masonie Home and School of Texas in Fort Worth were embodied in this great man. He likely was unaware, for he lived his life without fanfare, it was just him. One looks back at those early formative teenage years and very fortuantely can base our foundation on good strong moral examples such as Marshall Mathers. Tom "Archie" Robinson

Dad, Cecile, Bill and Alene Thompson on board a boat taking us on a day cruise tour of the beautiful Lake Coeur D'Alene in Idaho. Alene and Bill were "Mom and Dad" to Cecile and me when I was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base near Petaluma, California. Dad, Cecile and I also toured the enormous and powerful Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in the state of Washington. We also had a great all day tour of Glacier National Park while staying with Will Long (my classmate and buddy from Masonic Home) and his wife Jean in Missoula, Montana.

Dad's Coin Glue Tradition
Phil Mathers
August 31, 2003
So one day Dad was smoking with his buddies at the Terrace Apts. He decided to super-glue a coin to the table. Many others followed his lead. Thus, Dad's Coin Glue Tradition was started and it continues "as we speak".

Phil,
Thanks for the Picture!
Marshall and Pauline are often remebered by me and mine.
My husband was remembering a day of fishing with Marshall, when he returned from a day fishing with his Dad, this past weekend.
Earlier today I was dusting some shelves and there was a beautiful bowl they gave us when married so I spent a few minutes remembering them at our wedding.
We will always miss them and remember the beautiful memories we shared.

Marshall, you will never know how much you and Pauline were loved by all of us. It's sad that we were denied the opportunity to share your
last days, as we had shared the past 50 plus years. Having spent the better part of my 54 years around you and Pauline, I know how dearly you loved each other, and each one of us. I'm sad for your Houston family as well. They missed many years with you but we did not take or keep you away from them. Rest in peace and always know that you were loved.
