Michael Smith Obituary

Michael G. Smith
August 12, 1943 - June 13, 2022
Fort Worth, Texas - Michael G. Smith, 78, passed from this earthly life on Monday, June 13, 2022.
Born in 1943 in Fort Worth to Artemis and Gregory (Asikis) Smith, Mike grew up in Fort Worth graduating from Arlington Heights High School (1961) where he formed friendships he would hold dear his entire life. Mike graduated from The University of North Texas in 1965.
Baptized in the Greek Orthodox church, Mike was a longstanding member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. He participated in the annual Greek festival grilling the souvlaki and donating supplies. Mike also served on the Board of Directors at Ridglea Country Club.
Mike took over operation of The Paris Coffee Shop in 1965 after his father became ill. Mike expanded the coffee shop in 1974 where he continued operation for 47 years until selling the business in 2021.
The Paris Coffee Shop is a Fort Worth institution where people from all walks of life gathered to meet and eat. Everyone was greeted by Mike, served food prepared from Mike's recipes and finished off with a slice of pie made personally by Mike each day. Mike's pies were legendary in Fort Worth and the pie orders at Thanksgiving numbered in the hundreds. Mike was featured on The Food Network and in cooking articles of numerous newspapers and magazines. People often scheduled their week around the Special of the Day like Chicken & Dumplings on Thursdays and Fried Chicken and Lemon Meringue Pie on Fridays.
Mike loved sports. He was an accomplished Bowler with professional level skills. Mike excelled at tennis at Ridglea Country Club. He also followed TCU athletics closely for years and he loved to ski and play golf. Mostly, Mike loved being with people and people loved him.
Mike loved his family with his whole heart. Married to Ginger Smith for 52 years, their family included daughter Shelle and son Troy. To Mike, his friends were his family also and those friends were too numerous to count. If you were a friend of Mike's there was nothing he would not do for you. His "bear hug" sometimes felt like a chiropractor's adjustment but it was full of love. Mike loved to laugh and to make everyone else laugh. He always had a joke to tell.
Mike was a collector of many things and he could fix anything, often because he had a spare part in his collection of "treasures".
Mike was preceded in death by his father; mother; brothers, Gregg, David, Jimmy, Bob, Bill and Paul; and his son, Troy.
Mike is survived by wife, Ginger; daughter, Shelle Barber; son-in-law, Steven; grandsons, Hunter and Noah; along with many cousins.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The National Psoriasis Foundation, American Diabetes Association or The National Kidney Foundation.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, June 24, 2022, at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow (2-4 pm) at Ridglea Country Club, 3700 Bernie Anderson Ave., Fort Worth, Texas.

Dear Ginger & Shelle,
I was so sad to hear of our dear, sweet Mike's passing. I saw him in April 2021, before retirement, and he was ready. I first met him in 1976, when my boyfriend HAD to take me to this great place to eat, and Ive been going ever since. My Dad was also a true PCS patron and I met him there for lunch SO many times, especially on "fish Fridays". He always got the chocolate merengue pie. Oh the pies! Mike had so many friends, and each have their stories. You could write a book! His kind nature, big hugs, great smile always greeted you first at the PCS. Then of course he walked around and just visited. How blessed he was to have family and friends who loved him sssooo. I will think of him often, and say "thank you my friend" every time I go to the PCS for CFS & pie! May your loss be comforted by his love of family/friends & the legacy he left FTW. With sympathy...

I have lived away from FTW for 56 years but I often went to the Paris when I returned home for a visit. My last trip was Dec 2019 and Mike came out from the kitchen to give me a hug. We began North Hi Mount together and continued to AHHS '61. I enjoyed a short visit with Ginger that day. Wishing I could celebrate with his family and friends and remembering a fine man gone too soon. Tappy Thompson Scanlan

It doesn't seem that long ago that we were saying goodbye to Mike's brother Greg, yet now we have another Celebration of Life to attend. Mike's was a life well lived and well worth celebrating. He will be missed by so many of his friends from AHHS as well as the restaurant and elsewhere. He was always so welcoming, it was always a treat to see him. I'll never forget the Class of '61 Reunion planning meetings at the Smith's home.

My heartfelt condolences to Ginger, Shelle and the rest of the family.

Mike was always one of my favorite people. Best memory was when we were in college, he at North Texas me at TWU. It was my 21st birthday and I missed the morning bus to Fort Worth. He picked me up at the bus station and let me come to his place and hang out til the 5oclock bus, the last bus. He came and went but saw to it that I made the bus. He never even remembered that day when I told him about it years later, but that was how he was, kind, generous and thoughtful.

If you knew Mike, as many of us classmates did, you knew what it was to see his face light up at the sight of you - no matter how long it'd been since you saw him last. I never remember him without the sunniest smile on his face. Any of us who remained connected with Mike through the years, no matter how infrequently, will always carry wonderful memories of a wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers are with Ginger and Shelle, as well as all his friends who will feel this loss greatly.

What an impressive man whose work ethic was 2nd to none! The world would be a better place if we had more like him! We enjoyed decades of Mike´s lunches. RIP, Mike.
