Perry Bushong Obituary

Perry J. Bushong passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017. Celebration of life: 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Botanical Gardens Theater in Fort Worth. RSVP to [email protected]. Motorcycle procession assembling at 1 p.m and departing at 1:30 p.m. from Perry's Motorcycles & Sidecars, 816 South Sylvania Ave., Fort Worth, Texas, 76111. Perry was born May 9, 1943. He was owner of the Legendary BMW Motorcycles of Fort Worth for 30 years. He then continued his passion as Perry's Motorcycles & Sidecars. He was best known by friends and colleagues as a sidecar king and European restoration genius. Perry took great pleasure in creating a many number of things from sling shots to frozen squirrels for his famous bee-bee competitions. He loved his customers and called most of them his friends. Perry spent 16 years living in Germany and gaining his knowledge of European motorcycles and sidecars before returning to the U.S. in 1968. He was a draftsman and structural engineer before beginning his career as a motorcycle dealer. Perry, with a team of friends, successfully competed in and won the Great Cannonball Race. He lived life to the fullest enjoying what he loved: family, friends, beer, food, motorcycles, sidecars and kneelers. Unfortunately, Perry was not the sailor he aspired to be as he sunk two boats in Lake Grapevine, both named after his wife. Perry could and did literally repair a motorcycle with a toothpick. One of his close friends once said, "If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, I'd be fine if Perry was there because he would be making dinner and building a boat to get home." Survivors: Perry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Merry Bushong, three children, Jennifer Vacca, Perry J. Bushong II and Michelle Bushong; grandchildren (who called him "Poppy"), Perry III (Cyrus), Ethan, Arianna, Maddy, Gavino and Adriana; sisters, Bonnie Cherrington, Cheryl Cummins, Sonya Bushong, Angie Sparrow; brother, John Bushong; and countless nieces and nephews, all loved and picked on equally.

I said five years ago his shoes could not be filled and it stands true today. I listened to every word he said over the twenty plus years i was around him and what I learned from him about airhead motorcycles and sidecars is priceless. I'm proud to be a Perry Bushong trained Hack Pilot and the group of us will forever miss him.

I miss Perry. I miss his love of the two-wheel life, his inestimable knowledge, and his willingness to share that knowledge and lend a hand to novices. I'm thinking fondly of all the times we socialized over two or four wheel get-togethers, and the camaraderie that swirled around BMW of Fort Worth. My thoughts are with Merry and their kids... or rather adult children. Sorry, but I remember them as kids!

This is very sad news indeed. I have so many wonderful memories of Perry and Merry and their great BMW of Fort Worth locations. Perry sold me my first BMW in 1973, selflessly set it up to perfection, then taught me many of the things a novice rider should know. I remember rides around Texas and Arkansas with the FW club, many burgers and beers at Club Schmitz, and just hanging out at the shop on Saturday, making new two-wheel friends, picking up tips, and listening to stories Perry would gladly share. One memorable trip was to the Aqua Festival in Austin, when we all camped out near the dam before the races the next day. On any club ride, one never had to worry about a problem or breakdown, as Perry, Hugh or Bruce would be right there with needed help.

My heartfelt condolences to Merry, their children (whom I remember as babies, small children and into adulthood), and all of Perry's friends and extended family. Be it two wheels or three, Perry was unquestionably THE expert. More important, he was a fine man, husband and father.

So, Here I am composing a list of good friends to help me celebrate my 75 birthday and a start up party for my newly rebuilt 500 Morini race bike and I think ,"How about Perry and Merry?". And now I find no words to describe this loss. We have been through a lot, the four of us. We lost Ryan, our son and Merry and Perry's Godson. We all raced together, we lost some and we won more. Merry, I have no words to describe this loss. Rest in Peace my dear friend.

To me, Perry was a mentor, instructor, a craftsman an artist and someone I looked up to for 23 years. I purchased my first motorcycle from Perry. I will always cherish the time Mark and I spent with Perry. The endless hours of talking history, travels and adventures. The world is a lesser place without Perry Bushong in it. May God give Perry, Merry and his family peace, strength and courage. With Sincere love and appreciation for all that The Master Mechanic has done for all of us. God's Speed Perry.

Perry was the best mechanic I’ve ever known. He was always eager to share his knowledge and expertise. More than these attributes, he was a friend and I consider his friendship one of the treasures of my life. Perry will never be replaced but the great memories I have of him will last.
With much love from the Reynolds family,
We love you Perry.

Perry, you will be missed as a wonderful central token for our group of friends! I could listen to the stories endlessly. An amazing engineer and naturalist in mechanics and restoration of side cars and vintage motorcycles. We will be lost but your vision and hospitality will never be forgotten and will live on forever. Merry, we love you just as much my friend.

Perry was really big on Kendall oil, so I was in Colorado back in the day on my R90S that was eating oil and I kept looking for some Kendall oil as the level was dropping. Finally it dawned on me that Perry would have said, "Just put some damn oil in it, go drink a beer and get on with your ride."
And I will never forget being enrolled in the Bushong Sidecar School.

Not enough can be said to describe and tell all the stories. Perry was/is a great person. Who else could I call late at night when my bike stopped, and he simply said "OK here's what you do ..." and "call me back if that doesn't work". Perry treated us all like family. God bless him, Merry, and all the kids.

It is with great sadness that I read about the passing of Perry. He was a true fixture in the motorcycle community. I did not know him well but our paths did cross because he was doing a lot of work for my riding buddy. Jerry had several BMWs and a R65 BMW EML sidecar rig and it seemed that Perry was always working on one of Jerry's bikes at that time. He was a great guy who loved motorcycles, his customers and his friends. His was a life well lived and he will be sorely missed.

I had a little bit about Perry from my Georgia BMW dealer before I even lived in Texas, and then, once Texas became a larger part of my life, I'd start inquiring and visiting BMW dealers in and around Dallas. Everyone told me I needed to go see Perry. I will keep it short here, but we ended up doing a significant custom build together and spending much time in the shop over the last two years. It almost became a second home for me as I started building a life in DFW. I think we shared a lot of similar traits including early years in Germany, a passion for fine engineering, frugality, and a love of life. I just always felt a connection to Perry. I will miss him, his smile, his dedication, and his stories greatly. Ride in Peace Perry.

I met Perry in Germany in the early 60`s. He forgot more about motorcycles than I will ever know. We rode together numerous times until he went state side. He will be surely missed but his spirit will be with me forever.

The motorcycling community has lost an icon.
I purchased a new BMW K100RS from Perry and Merry in June of 1987. Perry helped me keep that bike in top condition and running like new to this very day. I purchased another new BMW (K1200LT) from Perry in July 2000. Again, still running like the day I bought it. I always admired and respected his extensive mechanical knowledge, skill as a craftsman, and valued/trusted his opinion. May he rest in peace as he motors on in eternity. Keep the shiny side up.

The motorcycling community has lost an icon. I purchased a 1987 BMW K100RS from Perry and Merry in June of 1987. Perry helped me keep that bike in top condition and on the road to this very day. So sorry for your loss. What a wonderful man Perry was. He built my 1999 Kawasaki Concours sidecar rig and it is perfect.
May he rest in peace and may the good Lord watch over him and his family.

I met Perry about 1969/70 when we both worked for Safway Scaffolds. My wife never met Perry but she knew his name because I talked about him enough. When she told my daughter about Perry passing my daughter said "that's the motorcycle man?" She never met Perry either but they knew him. Perry liked bikes and he liked people. He was as stickler for detail. An amazing engineer. And Perry always made you feel that he was genuinely glad to see you. I will miss him and am missing him even now. We are praying for the family.
