Robert Morrison Obituary

Robert "Scotty" Morrison, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 6, 2014 Celebration of life: A private service will be held at a later date. Scotty was born March 31, 1929, to Kate and Bob Morrison in Houston. He graduated from John H. Reagan High School, University Houston, and attended graduate classes George Williams (YMCA) Collage in Chicago. He married his high school sweetheart, Janet Harmon Caskey, in 1952. He served in the Army (1951-1953) in Korea. Scotty began working for the YMCA as a high school student after being in the Army and collage; he accepted a job as youth director at the Eastside Branch in Houston. In 1960, he moved to River Oaks, a suburb of Fort Worth, to become executive director of the Northwest Branch of Fort Worth YMCA. In 1966, he was awarded the honor of "Mr. River Oaks" for his outstanding work with the "Y" and the community. He enjoyed being in the "Indian Guide" program many years with his three sons. In 1970 he moved to the Northeast branch on Davis Boulevard where he won numerous awards for outstanding service to the "Y" and Northeast community. He was one of several who envisioned another branch for a growing area, which eventually led to the establishment of the airport YMCA. The YMCA was his love and calling, seeing young boys and girls mature and learn while having fun. After 25 years of service, he also liked to fish camp and many happy family vacations were spent fishing and camping in Colorado and Rockport with his family. The family would especially like to thank the hospice nurses for their care. Also from Professional Home Health for their care and devotion the past seven years: Jesse, Jane, Gracie, Roselind, Bummie; may God bless you all for your loving care and friendship. Survivors: Scotty enjoyed and loved all his large family. Feeling sentimental this evening, I typed Scotty's name into a search line and, as I expected because so many years have gone by, up came his obituary. Scotty and I lived next door to each other on East 19th St in Houston. We were dedicated playmates, constantly on our bikes, or climbing his backyard tree-house or chasing our homemade go-carts (using skate wheels) up and down the sidewalk. We watched as they paved 11th. Street, and we played baseball on 10th, reluctantly moving aside for an occasional car. I enjoyed reading about all his accomplishments as an adult--no surprise because his enthusiasm was there from the start. I remember his parents, too...sweet people and great neighbors. Now I send best wishes to all Scotty's descendants. Beverly Harris, retired journalist, Clarewood House, Houston.\

"Uncle" Scotty, you were my father's best friend, best man, and my god-father. I last saw you in the mid-60's. I have some great memories of you. I am sorry that we lost touch so long ago. God bless you.
