Ruby Nell Walden was born Feb. 10, 1913, in Rover, Ark., to Mary Lee Hogan Walden and Charles R. Walden. She was the third in a family of three brothers, Jesse James Walden, Charlie B. Walden and James Woodson Walden, all deceased, and one sister, Faye Walden White of Fort Worth.
She moved with her family to Fort Worth in 1915, where she graduated from Central High School and Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton. Returning to Fort Worth after serving in a church administration position with Doug Hudgins, former pastor of First Baptist Church, Fort Worth, after his move to Jackson, Miss., she began a distinguished teaching career that lasted until her retirement in 1978.
She met her husband, Harry Miner Jr., in San Antonio, and they married in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Ruby miner had a talent for leadership, close friend Ruth Ann Dupree recalls, generously demonstrating that ability by serving as longtime director of a number of Sunday school departments at Broadway Baptist Church, including those for seminary students and older adults.
Former students of Ruby Miner at McLean Middle School, where she ultimately served as a highly respected reading specialist and consultant, remember her as a consummate teacher, active sponsor of extracurricular activities and, above all, a devoted friend.
She enjoyed cooking, joining friends in 42, and had a quick, infectious laugh and renowned sense of humor. She was a good friend, beautiful and generous of heart, her family and many friends recall.
