Thomas Howard Obituary

Thomas Howard, Jr.
May 22, 2022
Fort Worth, Texas - Thomas E Howard, Jr., MD, loving husband and father, devoted grandfather, retired physician, and loyal friend passed on from this world on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at the age of 80, leaving a rich legacy and many who loved him dearly. His generosity and graciousness were bestowed in abundance upon his family and friends, and extended to his patients and community as well. He truly cared for all his patients, laughing and crying with them in their happiness and sorrow. He loved his grandchildren, and his friends' children and their children; he will always be Pop. He never missed birthdays and loved attending volleyball games, plays, going to movies, and even going shopping.
Dr. Howard was born in Talladega, Alabama and was drawn to consuming knowledge, even as a young boy. He often shared the story of the summer he read his entire set of encyclopedias because he was bored, and he was always a fount of knowledge and history no matter what topic was being discussed. He attended college and medical school at the University of Alabama, where he also perfected his golf game. He was known to skip lab if it was a pretty day to play a round of golf, coming back in the evening to finish up what he'd missed in class. He completed his internship and Residency at University of Virginia, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and then served in the United States Army in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. While in San Antonio, Dr. Howard completed his Fellowship, and then went into private practice. He moved to Fort Worth, where he was the first maternal fetal medicine physician and could recount stories of using the first sonogram that, according to him, had a really terrible 2D view but they all thought was just incredible! He also worked at the Edna Gladney Center for Adoption, seeing patients and delivering babies. He saw many changes in his profession over the course of the next 39 years that he practiced, and even had the privilege of delivering the child of one the babies he delivered early in his career.
He and his wife Susan were married for 36 years, and they both enjoyed serving with Meals on Wheels and other charity organizations. They also loved skiing and scuba diving, often centering their vacations around being able to do those activities. He was an avid reader and movie goer, and in his spare time he continued to enjoy playing golf. You could often find him over at Rivercrest Country Club during his time off. He loved spending time with friends and family, and would show up in support at any special function, event, or award ceremony to help celebrate. When he retired, he discovered a love of fly fishing and making fly rods. He spent much time in Georgia crafting his own fly rods, and fishing in both Oklahoma and Montana.
Dr. Howard is survived by his wife, Susan, son Todd Howard (Tina Howard) daughter Jennifer Tanguay, grandchildren Maddy, Jane, and Noxx, sister-in-law Linda Schulz (Gary Schulz), and beloved dog Willow and Tally (whom he tolerated). A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 1pm at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County or the Gladney Center for Adoption.

Dr. Howard delivered my oldest and middle child. My oldest born 7-1-1986 was delivered at 27weeks after being in the hospital for 4 weeks prior. He suffered 3 strokes and had to have 1 leg amputated just below the knee i was a young 19 year old and Dr. Howard saved my life and my baby and he was the most kind and wonderful DR. if it were not for Dr. Howard we would not have lived to tell our story. He was and will always be my hero. my thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. Rest in Peace Dr. Howard

When I started my residency in OBG at JPS in Fort Worth, Dr. Howard was our "high risk" clinic faculty. It was Monday mornings and he always brought donuts. I was very fortunate to have returned to JPS after Dr. Howard joined the faculty and got to interact with him as a peer. He was kind, generous, and smart. Anytime I worked on a Sunday, I brought donuts to honor him.

Susan, Through a friend, David was told of Tom´s obituary. Time stands still. It was just yesterday, as neighbors, we were helping the children into adulthood. Now Tom has gone on and the children are seeing
their own children into adulthood. David and I will always cherish the memories.

I met Tom & Susan the moment I moved to Fort Worth 15 years ago. They immediately filled a roll of Fort Worth parents and truly the best of Friends. They loved and helped me through heart breaks and celebrated holidays and ALL birthdays for me and my children. I taught Tom Pilates for 8 years and was the greatest pleasure to spend a few hours per week with him. He told so many amazing stories and was a wealth of information. He was incredibly warm, generous, and witty. I miss you Tom and am praying as you head to your next adventure perfect mind and body. Susan, I love you and will always be here for hugs and dates. God Bless you! Love, Jayme
